TIL the abbreviation for pound (lb) comes from an ancient Roman unit of measurement called "libra pondo" (a pound by weight). "Libra" meant balance or scales, and is also why the symbol for the British pound (Β£) is a stylized L with a line through it. theweek.com/articles/4613…

Are there any significant examples of Secret Police units in "Ancient" times? I'm familiar with the Gestapo and the Stasi, but i haven't heard of anything from medieval or roman times.

I bring this up because I was watching Avatar: The last Air Bender last night and got to the part about the Dai Lee (Cultural Heritage Enforcers). While that is obviously a work of fiction it made me wonder about pre-industrial age societies for instance, and whether or not other empires/governments/nations had Secret/Political forces that did similar jobs as the ones that exist in recent memory have done.

[TOMT][TV Show] Group of UK volunteers become an ancient roman army unit

Probably more than 10 years old now.

It was sort of half reality show, half documentary about a group of UK guys who volunteer to live like a roman military unit for a while. The one part I remember is they have to set up a fortified camp and figure out how some spike defenses would have worked in a better way than the historians had thought. They also noted the olive oil made for a good way of cleaning up your hands after work.

They had experts/historians commenting on how they deal with stuff as it happens.

I only saw part of one episode and would love to see the rest.
