Happy technically 100th birthday, NFL.
On August 20, 1920, what would become one of the world's biggest sports leagues was formed. There was no fanfare. It did not make major headlines. Heck, it wasn't even a national football league. It all started thanks to a group of Ohio businessmen who got together one summer day and got to work.
#Seeds of a League Formation
For much of its early history, pro football was nothing special. To many, it was seen as a far inferior product to its college counterpart, one that was plagued by corruption and instability. This sentiment would persist even after the NFL was created, but let's just say things were especially bad prior to organization.
In the early 20th century, the top pro football league was the Ohio League, located in, well, Ohio. Teams in the league would dominate the region and claim the "national championships". Of course, with no national league, having such a claim had little substance.^[1]
However, as the 1910s rolled around, their throne was under threat by the New York Pro Football League and other regional leagues such as those in the Midwest. Much like the AFL/NFL war in the 1960s, they fought with one another for talent; besides the bidding wars, ringers (college players being paid to play for these teams under fake names) and one-game signings were concerns raised by those in the pro football world. To make matters even worse, teams were bleeding money with each passing season.
By summer 1920, the Ohio League knew change had to be made to stop the chaos. What was their strategy? Bring the best teams in the regional associations together to form one pro football league.
"From a fan's standpoint, a pro football league was a great idea that sounded big-time and could produce a legitimate champion," wrote Chris Willis, head of NFL Films' Research Library.^[2] "But from an owner's standpoint, especially those from Ohio, a league was a chance for survival."
Ralph Hay, owner of the reigning national champion Canton Bulldogs, led the charge by reaching out to various Ohio League team managers and players to arrange a meeting. In particular were Frank Neid and Art Ranney of the defunct Akron Indians, manager Jimmy O'Donnell and player/coach Stanley Cofall of the Cleveland Tigers, and Carl Storck of the Dayton Triangles. Hay also asked his star player Jim Thorpe to tag along.^[2]
