Looking for legit places to purchase "imperfect" (not 100% "gemmy") ruby, sapphire, emerald, and garnet (non-Almandine) rough. eBay seems like scam-central.
I'm having a blast playing around with various samples of my collection, and I've found that I absolutely love shaping the imperfect rough for the above mentioned stones. I love the little inclusions that show up in rubies and sapphires (some of which I understand should be polished differently to see if they display asterism!), and I'm looking to get more while not breaking the bank.
Unfortunately, I'm down to my last few corundum, have no more emerald, and all of my Almandine garnet (from Tucson, AZ) has every fracture possible in it (lol), so I'm back down to sacrificing quartz (which is also running low). It seems half of the sites out there have shady reviews, sketchy pricing, or want to sell you on "magical" effects. If I wanted spell components, I'd be playing Dungeons and Dragons...which I do, just...not with my mineral collection!
What are the legit places to find some of these online, along with non-Almandine garnet? Or hell, even some half-decent Amethyst samples. I'd appreciate it if anyone was willing to share.
Thrift shop finds! I think the eggs are jasper, white and pinkish red may be Almandine. Iβm thinking the all pinkish red is a resin cast. It seems light weight, over saturated color, and has some areas of clear. Let me know what you think π reddit.com/gallery/puq0oo

Is there an easy way to prevent Almandine Garnet from fracturing during cabbing/faceting? I've gotten one stone in 10 to cab and even that one has cracks. I'm going low speed, very light pressure, very little heat.
