I have not read the books and do not know much of the underlying lore from them. Eardwulf is considered as a new leader by Edward for being young, someone men follow and is a decent warrior. Aldhelm protected Aethelflaed many times, fought victoriously in war with Aethelred, men listened to him and followed him and he doesn't seem much older than Eardwulf, if he even is. I wasn't sure if Aldhelm was an Earldorman, but it Doesn't matter because neither is Eardwulf.

By now, I think everyone knows what sort of works in Latin I like: natural philosophy, technology, maths, business (including shorthand), law, medicine, and reasonably modern culture (particularly comedy). Keep your Cæsar and your Vergil, and give me Newton, Leibniz, and Martial. I also enjoy works that "play" with the language—by "play", I mean puns, jokes, wordplay, crosswords, acrostics, telestichs, puzzles of any description, and riddles.
It would appear that one of the Anglican Church Fathers, Saint Aldhelm, was of one mind with me: he wrote a hundred devilishly difficult brain-twisters, with a sophisticated, somewhat Hellenised vocabulary—if solving the morning cryptic is your religion, Saint Aldhelm would be your Pope. Granted, a few of these are difficult for the "wrong" reason (i.e., virtually incomprehensible nisi you're au fait with 7th-century patristics), but most are pretty much universal.
In that spirit, I have decided to share this beautiful work with all of you. As in a modern book, riddles are at the front, answers at the back, so you won't be unduly spoiled.

I believe that Aldhelm deserved better treatment from the writers and Aethelflaed. In season 3, after Aldhelm is stabbed in the gut by Aethelred, he seeks comfort from Aethelflaed where she heals his wound. During this healing, Aldhelm admits to Aethelflaed that he has feelings for her; even that he is in love with her. However, in the first scene where we see Uhtred (S4), Uhtred is humping Aethelflaed in Coccham while Aldhelm stands watch outside of where the sex takes place. After the sex stops, Aethelflaed admits to Aldhlem that she doesn't feel like she should stop humping Uhtred even though she knows of Aldhelm's love for her. And now that Aethelflaed has promised to not bed or marry a man after becoming Lady of Mercia, she not only disrupts Uhtred's love for her but as well as Aldhlem. Yes, I know that Aethelflaed isn't forced to be with Aldhelm but I still believe that she could have been a little bit nicer about rejecting him instead of having him stand guard outside of a hall where the love of his life is being humped in. All in all I believe that Aldhelm was done wrong after having a big part in S3, but then being cucked and pretty much ignored in S4 despite Mercia growing more relevant. At this point, I would not be surprised if they kill him off in the next season with Aethelflaed feeling little to no remorse.
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I haven’t read the books and I may not understand the politics but why was Aldhelm never even considered as a ruler of Mercia? Or maybe as a husband for Aethelflaed? I know she doesn’t love him but he loves her and loves Mercia.
Initially he is seen as never around women. Always faithfully following Aethelred until he realizes his man is a cruel idiot. Then as he switches towards Aethelflaed, he's given permission to sleep with her essentially. Probably could've made a run once he had her trust. But he essentially becomes her bodyguard through S4 and even helps hide her and Uthred's affair/love.
I'm aware they are meant to be a platonic relationship. But as close as he is to Aethelflaed they almost behave like a couple yet with no romantic component.
So I ask, is he gay or at least asexual? I've not read the books, though I plan to, so I have no clue if this is more overt or implied there.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
