I have experience with the traditional kind of green farming, which involves:
I've been trying to understand how agroforestry / forest gardening / lazy farming differs from this.
Looking up on some websites, I get the impression that some people literally grow a forest. Growing a forest based farm sounds intriguing to me, but there keep being problems with this approach that I do not understand. I hope someone with experience can clear this up for me:
Most food plants that we grow (berries, fruits, vegetables), prefer full sunlight. There are a few different plants that prefer shade. But most fruits / vegetables that we are used to grow better with more sunlight.
Big trees provide lots of shade. That is why we remove big trees. So that our shrubs / annuals get more sunlight.
Historically we only planted dwarf trees so we can reach its fruit without a big ladder and so that it doesn't have too much shade.
Please let me know how you have big shady trees yet grow plants underneath with full sunlight.
This makes sense to me - Try to grow plants that are native to the area rather than some foreign plants that require extra maintenance to live in this environment.
I can imagine letting your garden grow out, then weeding out the bad plants, and just keeping the native good plants around.
But here is my problem: I would be interested in growing lots of plants that are not native to the area.
Basil is native to India. Carrots are native to Europe and southwest Asia. Cucumbers are native to South Asia.
All of these plants grow well here in North East America, but they are not native. And they generally don't start growing by themselves as weeds here either.
The only edible fruit bearing weeds that grow by themselves from weeds here are blueberries. And sure, I can grow lots of wild blueberries.. But otherwise the other wild weeds don't provide fruit. They can do other things

The forest is finally closed canopy! After about five years doing agroforestry with coffee we managed to bring back a closed canopy on Mount Gorongosa. I just can’t believe my eyes on some days. We are still have a long way to go, but this is a small victory.
Here is the photo to tie it together. These are Umbila (a fast growing native hardwood) growing straight up between the coffee.

I live on 60 acres in the Midwest. I’m up on the hill with fairly flat brome pasture around me. The soil is well-suited for growing grass, but the pH is relatively low and there’s only 6 to 12 inches of topsoil with clay underneath.
I’ve become interested in agroforestry for aesthetic, practical, and personal reasons. I would like to have a product to harvest but do not wish to buy additional land. I would greatly enjoy the shade and the wind block on the house, because the wind is constant here. Growing broom is fine, but I just dislike not having any trees surrounding the house. Plus I would very much like to have some thing to harvest, and nuts carry a special appeal to me because they are so hands-on.
I’m looking for some reading material and a starting point. I would like to find some reading material and research material for any successful commercial nut orchards with a species of trees that grow well in this type of soil. I know from experience that trees with shallow roots like maples do quite well, and the soil can support plants like blackberries like nobody’s business but raising the wrong species of tree commercially can be a real fight and would not be worth the expense if it is not a good fit.
There seem to be a lot of walnut trees growing in the ditches and roadsides around me. I have heard that these can grow well in clay soil‘s, but I do not know about commercial nut production in the same soil‘s. They would be especially appealing from an agroforestry standpoint because they leaf later in the spring, which would allow the cool season brome grass a lot of sunlight during the growing season, and protect it during the hot part of the year.
My desire would be to plant eventually about 40 acres of walnut trees within my brown crop in such a way that the farmer who harvest the brome could continue to come in and bale the grass, leaving me only one late season mowing around harvest time.

As the title indicates I am trying to find more information about intersections between agroforestry and traditional forestry in terms of schooling and job opportunities. If anyone has relevant experience or knowledge in this realm I would greatly appreciate any advice or input; I am currently at a difficult crossroads in my life where I need to decide if I'm going to continue with my forestry degree or change lanes and apply myself to the realm of agroforestry/regenerative agriculture, either entirely or at least defer my uni acceptance for a year to travel/WWOOF/learn more about regenerative agriculture through hands on volunteer work and taking courses.
Of course only I can make a decision for myself and I'm not looking for people to tell me what to do, but I am hoping to find out if anyone has experience in doing something like completing schooling in forestry and somehow bridging into agroforestry/regenerative agriculture?
Some background context - I have a forestry technician diploma, urban forestry certificate and arboriculture certificate. I have done block layout in BC (Canada), a forestry consulting assistant gig in Ontario which I enjoyed, and have since been doing urban tree work for the last couple of years.
I have the option of obtaining an HBsc in forestry from Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada in only two years by jumping into years 3 and 4 of the undergrad program.
I am learning that I am more invested in the realm of regenerative agriculture than I am the forestry industry at large, and am hesitant to spend the time and money on a degree I potentially may not use or need being that my intention is to become involved in regenerative agriculture. Ya feel?
Of course I'm at the point where I'm over thinking, and you can only really know these things by jumping in and finding out the hard way, but I don't believe a decision like this is best made lightly or without thorough consideration.

I'm planning to implement additional agroforestry practices on our farm this year utilizing keyline design patterning for our gentle hills in PA. The plan is to graze beneath and between rows of nut and fruit trees native to our state. I've been looking for recommendations on spacing between the rows, but haven't found anything useful. Does anyone have any resources that discuss row spacing such that pasture grasses would still thrive? I've re-read Mark Shepard's books, but he makes no mention of row spacing. What considerations do folks use for setting their spacing for agroforestry planting involving grazing? Largest tree canopy spread x2 plus an extra X feet?
