Were currently learning about the gilded age, and this involved learning about the most infamous examples of political corruption, William Tweed. The discussion came right after a documentary about Carnegie and Frick, as well as having a homework packet the night before on the triangle shirtwaist factories. Tweed in comparison seemed very tame, even likable in comparison. Yes, he did use political machines to get into office, but he did make efforts to help the conditions of the lower and working class. (not out of his own kindness, but still) And he did take bribes for public projects, but I imagine this would be common practice at this time, and not too controversial. So why does boss Tweed get this reputation as one of the worst examples of political leaders in the gilded age? There have been far worst examples throughout recent history of even shittier local political figures (like all the kkk members in southern government at this time) but they are hardly if ever mentioned by name, at least in my curriculum.

It is time for the political machines of yesteryear to gear back up in a political power play.

In the first corner we have William H. Tweed

In the second corner we have Richard J. Daley

• Nickname: The Boss or Hizzoner or Dick the Builder
• Style: Efficiency, "Honest," Visible
• Political Offices: Mayor of Chicago, Illinois State Representative, Illinois State Senator, Cook County Clerk
• Political Machine: Cook County Democratic Central Committee
• Convictions: None
• Biggest Scandal: 1968 Democratic Convention
• Biggest Power Plays: Oversaw the building of O'Hare International Sears Tower, University of Illinois at Chicago, and McCormick Place; mobilized 20,000+ police officers and guardsmen for the 1968 convention, heavily influential on a national scale in terms of the Democratic National Committee

In the third corner we have E.H. Crump

• Nickname: Boss or Red Snapper
• Style: Personal, Behind the Scenes, Spiteful
• Political Offices: Mayor of Memphis, United States Representative (Tennessee)
• Political Machine: E.H. Crump Insurance
• Convictions:None although "removed" from office by court order for not enforcing prohibition
• Biggest Scandal: Running for Sheriff while still mayor
• Biggest Power Plays: Installed puppet mayors for decades and even helped governors and other politicians get elected; combined utilities into one municipal unit; used his insurance company to help guide city policy in Memphis

In the final corner we have Huey Long

• Nickname:The Kingfish
• Style: Populist, Orator, Aggressive
• Political Offices: Governor (Louisiana) United States Senator (Louisiana)
• Political Machine: No name except maybe Share the Wealth Society
• Convictions:None but failed Impeachment attempt
• Biggest Scandal: Attempts to neuter Big Oil/Impeachment/Bloo
