Excerpt about SimGolf from Sid Meier's Memoir! (Game design, Will Wright, Creation process, Sid Stories)

My coworker Jake Soloman once asked me point blank, β€œWhat’s your guilty pleasure?” It should be mentioned that he did this on stage in front of a few hundred people, which is not usually the ideal place to unburden your soul.

Fortunately, the answer came easily. β€œExcess,” I told him with a pained smile.

The drawback of being able to isolate the interesting part of any given thing is that you are constantly interested by every given thing. I routinely find myself stumbling into new hobbies almost by accident, and as with my work life, I seem incapable of doing anything halfheartedly.

As an example, I like to play the guitar. I know a fair number of chords, and when I’m playing music with friends I’ll occasionally hand over the keyboards to someone else, so I can pretend to be a rock star in short bursts. But I wouldn’t consider myself astronomically talented at, or obsessed with, playing the guitarβ€”I’m just interested in it. Therefore, I own about twenty of them. In my defense, some are for convenience. I keep two at the office and two in our church building, because you never know whether the acoustic or electric mood will strike, and I don’t want to haul them back and forth all the time. The rest are either hanging on display at home or in various states of storage, but they do get played, as I keep insisting to Susan.

Then there are the radio-controlled airplanes, and the historical memorabilia, and the golf clubs . . . like I said, guitars are just one hobby of mine. I’m a nerd, and nerds always want to have the latest gadget. I can justify my extensive collection of game consoles as part of my job, at least, but for the most part I have to make a conscious effort to keep the accumulation below pathological levels. I once got to visit George Lucas’s library at Skywalker Ranch, which has a ladder leading up to a second-floor balcony where you can access another several thousand books. It’s probably a good thing that I’ve never lived in a house that could hold that many books, but a grand, sprawling library is the first room I’d install if I did.

One important deterrent I’ve learned is to limit myself to a trickle of information, because it only takes a few minutes with a magazine before I start thinking that this set of titanium-alloy golf clubs will finally take my game to the next level, or that digitally superior guitar amp will really make my Paul Reed Smith hollowbody sound like it was meant to. A few years back, I canceled all my subscrip

Notes from Lessons in Game Design by Will Wright (2003)

https://youtu.be/CdgQyq3hEPo

  • Pinball construction set, user got to be the designer.
  • Programmers felt the limitless possibilities of constructing digital systems.
  • Explore possibility space - We are selling you problems for 40 dollars. The more creative solutions, probably the more you're going to enjoy the game.
  • Right scope of the possibility space - Paint program has a lot of possibility spaces, but are a little too open ended. Exploring a landscape with different peaks that the player can aim for, as goals, some with low and slow difficulty some with high and fast difficulty. sims material and social success, aim for both to progress and climb higher. - How each game fits into different possible possibility spaces, you want to find new rules sets with different possibility spaces.
  • Polish the failstates - Spent more time developing the failure in Sims, because it needs to give clear feedback and be interesting because the player will experience it a lot. Calvin factor (?) doing the opposite, β€œwhat am I supposed to do in the game” and then try the opposite. Turn around 180 degrees in a racing game and drive backwards while trying to avoid all of the cars.
  • Trying the game and get a sense of the possibility space. At first when he tried GTA, it looked linear, guns, cars, and then he noticed that you could go anywhere!
  • Filling in the blanks - The Sims characters don't talk English, instead gibberish with images, yet the player understands exactly what’s happening. They playtested with two players so they could talk to each other, the players narrative was a lot more detailed than what the simulator in the game actually was. Players are good at filling in the blanks on their own.

Someone asked this same question a year ago but there was hardly any feedback. Can anyone share their experience taking this course? I've been on the fence to get it but I'm not sure if it would provide more game design insight than some of the resources I already have (Book of Lenses, Theory of Fun). Thank you!

I liked Jason Wright at first but I feel like his time here will end up being a failure by the time he leaves bc of Snyder.

Yeah I already think he’s 100x better then Bruce Allen ever was but JW also is smart enough to stay out of the football side. The reason why I think his time here might be looked at as a failure is:

  1. He already completely botched the Sean Taylor number retirement. Whether it was Snyder forcing him to do it to distract from the congress pressure and DEA raid but either way they fucked it up big time and pissed a lot of fans off

  2. Him and his legal team have recently said they won’t be able to get RedWolves/Wolves as the new name which was the biggest fan favorite of all the potential names. So now after all the videos and hints that it’s looking like commanders/Admirals will most likely be the new name. After 24 hours since the announcement it seems to be a very hated move if they do decide those military type of names.

  3. We haven’t heard anything about a new stadium except possibly buying land in Prince William County or Loudoun County.. which would be an awful decision. We’re 5 year away from being out of our lease in Landover (2027) and we have 0 progress of getting a new β€œstate of the art” stadium.

We as a fan base have been through so much since Snyder bought the team and we have zero faith that they’ll get this name, stadium, or anything else right. There’s a good chance that by 2030 our name will be the Commanders and our stadium will be in Prince William County.. imagine that 30 years ago when our team was raising our 3rd Lombardi trophy. The path we’re on right now might show Wright couldn’t overcome Snyder and that we’re totally screwed until he’s gone. We might not have any fans left here soon.

SELL THE TEAM

Hey everyone! Over the last decade or so I've been creating art for videogames, they've all been free to use (public domain, also for commercial projects without giving attribution).

The last couple of years I kept getting requests from board game designers to create content for them specifically and well - here's the first project! I've gathered requests, created icons and put them in a package, feel free to use them in any sort of project.

Let me know if you've got additional ideas or like to submit your own request, cheers!
