Victor Dwight Shoemaker - known as J.R. - and his family were attending a family reunion at his grandfather's mobile home on the 1st of May, 1994. His grandfather lived on the outskirts of Short Mountain - a long and relatively low mountain of 8,000 acres.
That morning, J.R. and his two cousins - 8-year-old Lloyd and 9-year-old Tommy, went to play in the woods of the mountain. According to his cousins, J.R. ran back to his grandfathers's home at around 8:30AM because he was hungry. As he ran off into the wilderness, they apparently lost sight of him. He never returned to his grandfather's home. Within an hour, a search party was assembled.
The search was treacherous: the terrain was rugged and the weather was cold, foggy, and raining. One theory early on was that J.R. had become victim to a careless hunter. This was soon ruled out when no body was discovered in the area and Sunday hunting was prohibited n West Virginia.
During the search, volunteers found a spot where they thought J.R. may have been sleeping. There were three rocks arranged in a triangle, with a stick in the middle, three logs on the side and freshly disturbed dirt. Despite the extensive search, there was no tangible evidence uncovered that could indicate where J.R. was or what happened to him.
In 1994, authorities announced they didn't suspect foul play and surmised that J.R. had just gotten lost and and died from exposure. They claimed an abduction was unlikely because of the remote location and because there was just one road in and out of the area. It should be noted, however, that authorities called the FBI in to assist indicating that they at least considered foul play.
J.R.'s parents - Victor Sr. and Nettie - don't agree with the simple theory that their son got lost. They said he was very familiar with the area. Despite this, however, the mountains is no place for a young boy on his own; he was always accompanied by his cousins before. His parents - and many locals - speculate J.R. was kidnapped. One incident during the search could indicate this: during the search, a sniffer dog kept his nose to the air (as opposed to the ground) and led authorities to a field in the mountains and then to a road before halting. This made some believe somebody had carried J.R. out to a car waiting on the road.
J.R.'s parents have also been suspicious of J.R.'s cousins. According to them, the two boys acted strange upon
