(Phil. languages) Does anyone know why Waray-Waray is so different from Cebuano/Hiligaynon?

I'm a native speaker of Cebuano, a language in the Philippines, and though Bisaya is in itself considered a language (as it should!), some linguists apparently think that Cebuano-Waray-Hiligaynon-etc. (the Visayan languages) form more of a dialect continuum than being a group of separate languages. Like dialects of Bisaya, the language.

I'd accept that for Hiligaynon, because as a Cebuano speaker I've had a full conversation with a Hiligaynon speaker without even realizing (it was pretty confusing but overall intelligible). Waray-Waray, on the other hand... I've had conversations with Waray people and the words are incredibly different. I think it's a totally different language from Cebuano and Hiligaynon. I'd accept Cebuano and Hiligaynon as dialects of each other, but Waray-Waray? I don't think so....

Why is it so different? Was there a different civilization/culture in Leyte before, separate from the nearby Visayan islands?

I'm from Southern Leyte, but I know that I speak Cebuano due to migration, so the question is still worth asking.

Can we clarify that Tagalog, Waray, Ilocano, etc are LANGUAGES

I’m seeing a lot of posts claiming that these are dialects. No. These are languages. They have their own words for nouns and verbs, even grammatical structures etc. Just like other languages, of course there is a lot of loan words from other languages.

So what is Filipino? It’s basically Tagalog but some words from other languages were added. It is political, that’s for sure. The ideal is that they (i mean govt agencies that concerns language and culture) want to have a lingua franca in the Philippines and Filipino was the solution. It failed because we have almost 200 languages and we are an archipelago, we’re not that culturally integrated as a nation.

I am amused that some people still don’t know this by now.

O/U in Bisaya, I in Tagalog (Philippine languages)

This seems like something that would already have studies about it, but I can't find any. So does anyone know why Bisaya/Cebuano, a Philippine language, uses the O/U sound (I'll just treat them as interchangeable because most words spelled with O in Bisaya are pronounced as U anyway) while Tagalog uses I in similar words?

Bisaya and Tagalog vocabulary is very different from each other, but like Bisaya and Bahasa Indonesian, there are still some similar words thanks to the fact that they're Malayo-Polynesian languages. I noticed that Bisaya often uses O/U for those similar words and Tagalog uses I.

Examples:

lawom - deep (Bisaya)

lalim - deep (Tagalog)

maaslom (archaic form of aslom) - sour (Bisaya)

maasim - sour (Tagalog)

tanum - plant (Bisaya)

tanim - plant (Tagalog)

dag-om - gloomy (Bisaya)

dilim - darkness/gloom (Tagalog)

bituon - star (Bisaya)

bituin - Tagalog

"I will cook this" would be "Ako ni lutuon" in Bisaya and "Lulutuin ko ito" in Tagalog. Does anyone know why?

Unreached People Group of the Week - Maguindanao in Philippines

Sitting in my in laws house, my FIL thinks sleeping past 7 is bad, so I got up early and am working on this and pretending to be asleep bc I think its funny to mess with him and pretend to sleep till 10-1030. Not sure how the rest of this prank will end but YOLO! Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! Meet the Maguindanao in Philippines!

Index Ranking (Urgency): 90

Climate: The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate that is usually hot and humid. There are three seasons: a hot dry season or summer from March to May; a rainy season from June to November; and a cool dry season from December to February. The southwest monsoon lasts from May to October, and the northeast monsoon from November to April. Temperatures usually range from 21Β Β°C (70Β Β°F) to 32Β Β°C (90Β Β°F). The coolest month is January; the warmest is May.

The average yearly temperature is around 26.6Β Β°C (79.9Β Β°F). In considering temperature, location in terms of latitude and longitude is not a significant factor, and temperatures at sea level tend to be in the same range. Altitude usually has more of an impact. The average annual temperature of Baguio at an elevation of 1,500 meters (4,900Β ft) above sea level is 18.3Β Β°C (64.9Β Β°F), making it a popular destination during hot summers. Annual rainfall measures as much as 5,000 millimeters (200Β in) in the mountainous east coast section but less than 1,000 millimeters (39Β in) in some of the sheltered valleys.

Terrain: The Philippines is an archipelago composed of about 7,640 islands, covering a total area, including inland bodies of water, of around 300,000 square kilometers (115,831Β sqΒ mi). The country has many mountains, rivers, and volcanoes. The highest mountain is Mount Apo. It measures up to 2,954 meters (9,692Β ft) above sea level and is located on the island of Mindanao. The longest river is the Cagayan River in northern Luzon, measuring about 520 kilometers (320Β mi). Manila Bay, upon the shore of which the capital city of Manila lies, is connected to Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines, by the Pasig River. SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
