(In no particular order)
It’s a pretty remarkable story. The whole band’s is, really. These guys came from nothing (except for maybe Tommy, whose family was middle class). I don’t think any of them finished high school. They didn’t particularly have all that much where individual talent is concerned. Yeah Tommy is a good drummer and Nikki is a good (potentially great) songwriter. And Mick can shred. But taken as a collective whole they managed to create magic, especially with the first two albums.
This guy had a long life lived hard (even as of 2010 or whenever the book was written). He has been forced at various times to be introspective but doesn’t appear to have taken to it very well.
He doesn’t seem to be completely honest, either about his ‘sobriety’ and about how much he was/is still drinking, or about how much he remembered from some of these episodes and others.
He has nothing nice to say about the other band members, like at all. Some of this may be justified on some level (not one of them bothered calling when Skylar got sick) but it’s hardly like he’s been an angel himself.
This does not read like a guy who has done very much actual recovery beyond what was court mandated or he was otherwise forced into. He still seems to be looking for the next rush, the next lay, the next thrill.
You get the sense some fucked up stuff might have gone down in his childhood, which he isn’t talking about (or has even acknowledged).
His ex wives have some pretty telling anecdotes that round out the story and provide some much-needed perspective.
The whole thing is a little sad. Here is a guy who came from nothing, got everything, blew everything and caused a ton of harm along the way, suffered incredible trauma himself with the loss of his daughter. What’s missing is the final arc of the narrative, where he comes good and finds some peace, serenity, and artistic prowess. He doesn’t appear to have achieved any of that, at least not in this telling.
That shit was hilarious
How the hell did he only serve 15 days in jail?
