ViacomCBS surging as a potential buyout target, in the latest twist in the "streaming wars"

VIAC stock jumped 3.81% today to $42.46 as rumours around a buyout continue to intensify, and I believe this is just the start. Several analysts agree with me, setting an average price target of $54 for the next 12 months.

I know it's been dismissed as a meme stock for the last wee while, due to the crazy rise and fall with the Archegos β€˜incident’ and the hype around a possible pump after that implosion. But hear me out: I believe VIAC is actually a great value opportunity, with a solid 25-50% medium term upside.

There are a several reasons, which I’ll detail below, but essentially they have become a major buyout target as the streaming wars heat up between Netflix, Amazon, Disney and Apple. WarnerMedia (HBO) and Discovery just announced a huge merger, and Amazon has announced it would buy Hollywood studio MGM for just under $9 billion. That’s moving attention and speculation onto VIAC.

First, let’s analyse the quality of the business. ViacomCBS is a traditional broadcaster with a huge content library, that is currently pivoting from that dying business model and transitioning into streaming for obvious reasons. It is one of the world’s biggest content creators with its streaming service Paramount+ (rebranded from CBS All Access) carrying a content catalogue of 30,000 episodes, 2500 movies and 1000 live sports events. They are also diversifying with a free ad-driven service named Pluto TV, and premium offering Showtime.

Did I mention they have rights to the Superbowl? Content is king in streaming, and they have a huge number of popular shows and movies for a range of ages. To name a couple, they have StarTrek, NCIS, 60 Minutes, The Godfather, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, Top Gun, Hawaii 5-0, Teen Mom, The Late Late Show with James Cordon, Survivor, Key & Peele, Big Brother, The Amazing Race along with traditional offerings like CBS news.

One of their best attractions and a major competitive advantage in my view is their huge children’s content library through Nickelodeon, making them an attractive option for families. Titles include Spongebob Squarepants, PAW Patrol, Avatar: The Last Airdender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dora the Explorer, Blue’s Clues and much much more. The list is very long, and this in particular has been driving subscriber growth recently.

Despite all of this, the company is one of the cheapest current offerings in streaming, due to a bizarre collapse in their stock price which has nothing to do with them. They were

[Goldman Sachs] ViacomCBS Inc. (VIAC, Buy): The most underappreciated streaming stock

TL;DR - GS PT $75, Citi PT $56, Current Price $41, 70-80% Discount to NFLX and DIS.

VIAC #TOTHEMOON πŸš€πŸš€ πŸš€

VIAC valued at a 70-80% discount to NFLX and DIS

We see several potential catalysts over the coming weeks and months for VIAC:

Paramount+ launch: After a robust marketing campaign with advertisements on the Super Bowl, The Grammy Awards and NCAA March Madness, we expect Paramount+ to have meaningfully broadened consumer awareness. As a result, we expect strong SVOD subscriber net adds in 1Q21. On a total reported basis (i.e., including Showtime OTT and other DTC services), we estimate VIAC will add 4mn+ global SVOD subscribers in 1Q21 vs. an implied average of 2-3mn per quarter during 2020.

June pricing change: In early June, VIAC will debut a $4.99 pricing tier for Paramount+, which will also remove the linear station feeds from the service. At this point, management has indicated they will be able to explore further bundling and distribution agreements, which we view as a potential catalyst to 2021 subscriber growth.

Improving original content slate: As production returns across VIAC's studios, we expect the original content slate for both film and television to improve for the company's DTC services, namely Paramount+, and the company's linear networks.

Improving advertising trends: As the economy reopens, we believe demand for advertising will continue to recover. With the expanded reach from Pluto TV and Paramount+, we believe VIAC presents advertisers a more holistic offering and the ability to reach all age demos.

We maintain our Buy rating and 12-month price target of $75 for VIAC.

Note also that Paramount+ only launched in the quarter on March 3, and has the below % share of new subscribers. Note how they beat Disney+, Hulu and Netflix! Who cares about $DISC here if it is only 60% of what Paramount+ has.

ViacomCBS bets you will subscribe to 5 or more VIDEO streaming services, leaving plenty of room for Paramount+ (Paramount Plus) : February 25,2021 :

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/25/viacomcbs-bets-you-will-subscribe-to-5-or-more-streaming-services.html

a) It’s highly unlikely millions of people are going to cancel Netflix, Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video to subscribe to Paramount+.

b) There’s no certainty U.S. households are actually going to sign up for five or more streaming services.

Former WarnerMedia CEO and current AT&T CEO John Stankey guessed β€œfour or five.”

Starz CEO Jeffrey Hirsch said β€œfour to six.”

Hulu’s director of product management, Jason Wong, said β€œthree to five.”

ViacomCBS is betting its company on that number coming in high.

Letter to ViacomCBS investor relations (investorrelations@viacbs.com) and Tom Ryan(CEO of streaming) on LinkedIn regarding CONTENT LICENSING instead of onboarding it on Paramount+

Yes, you read that correctly... I wrote an email and send a LinkedIn message to ViscomCBS investor relations team and Tom Ryan who is the head of Streaming in $VIAC. The Executive team is aggresively licensing out Paramount+ exclusive content to other streaming giants basically robbing it of exclusivity and stripping its value away, hence subscribers are not joining Paramount+ as all of its content on other platforms. So you favorite South Park, Yellowstone, The Trial of Chicago Seven to Peacock(Comcast), Netflix and Disney!!

https://observer.com/2020/06/yellowstone-netflix-peacock-kevin-costner-viacomcbs/

Yes, $VIAC Robert Makesh and Tom Ryan are selling the long term growth and competitive advantage of Paramount+ for immediate and short term gains in revenue and profits!

WE NEED TO STOP THIS TOGETHER!!!! Please message Tom Ryan and Robert Bakish and also email them on investorrelations@viacbs.com to stop selling our future... if you want the stock to be at $150 price target we need to unite and remind the management to stop KILLING PARAMOUNT+.

Here is the email i sent, I am also $13k in calls on this baby and I want it to go to DA MOON!

==========================

Hello ViacomCBS Investor Relations Team,

I am a shareholder of ViacomCBS and I have few questions that I want either Robert Bakish or Tom Ryan to answer to me, better would if both can reply.

For me the idea of licensing out ViacomCBS exclusive content such as South Park, Yellowstone, The Trial of the Chicago 7, etc... makes no sense, because you are compromising the value of Paramount+ and its unique content that is going to drive in at least 150 million of subs by 2023-24 better than your expected 65 million by 2024. Please explain to me why we are giving out our EXCLUSIVE ANCHORING Content to other STREAMING GIANTS???? Also we have 49% ownership in Miramax with exclusive distribution film rights for 600-700 films that Miramax made including Pulp Fiction, why are we not onboarding this??? Also why is Robert Bakish thinks having too much content is bad on Paramount+ and that there is a need to license it out, when there is a war for content, as the Streaming Giants understand that they need to collect as many exclusive content rights for films/shows to keep their subscribers invested and to onboard new ones. Why Tom Ryan and Robert Bakish are robbing/jeopardising their own creation by seeking sho
