Guide: Finding Water In The Wilderness

Article by Les Stroud

No shelter. No food. No fire.

Except in the most extreme cases, these won’t kill you – at least not quickly. But none of them compares with the lack of water, which carries a whole different level of significance. You can live for more than three weeks without food, but you likely won’t make it much past three days without water. Granted, some people have survived as long as ten days without water, but after the third day the ability to function is radically reduced.

Here’s a moment from one of my Survivorman shows:

After only 24 hours surviving in the Kalahari Desert, the lack of water in my body brought about terrible headaches. Then on my fifth day there, with temperatures on the sand pushing 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius), my water ran out altogether. Over those five days, I had urinated only once, and that was with drinking a measured gallon of water for each of the first four days. On the fifth and sixth days, the few ounces I made by chewing plants and distilling my own urine still didn’t suffice. Even the act of eating the plants used up precious energy, as well as water in my system needed for digestion. Simply chewing in extremely hot weather used up energy I didn’t have to spare.

Our bodies need two to three litres of water each day. Throw in heat, cold, stress, exertion or diarrhea and you need much more. You need to know how to find water, make water, and even prevent your body from losing water.

One thing that people get hung up on with water (assuming they’re lucky enough to find it) is whether they should drink it at all, for fear of getting sick. But learn this mantra: you will die of dehydration a lot faster than you will from the effects of drinking untreated water. In fact, in all but the rarest circumstances, drinking untreated water won’t kill you at all. Even if you do contract parasites, most of them won’t hit you for at least a week, if not longer. Should you make it out alive, you can easily treat most of them, albeit with powerful drugs.

Except in extreme circumstances, water in remote areas is usually safe to drink. Sure, if you’re downstream from a village in Africa or just outside a town that happens to use the stream as its septic system, then you’re probably going to ingest pathogens by drinking the water. Then again, if you’re that close to civilization then you’re likely not in a survival situation at all. I’ve gotten giardia, a nasty par

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Guide: Plan for Long-Term Water Usage

Prepping 101 (Storey, 2018), by Kathy Harrison, is a guide for families hoping to prepare for emergencies and disasters that could threaten them and their surrounding community. Harrison is a national spokesperson who promotes family preparedness and foster parenting. In addition to authoring Just in Case, Another Place at the Table, and One Small Boat, she has also appeared on the National Geographic’s Doomsday Preppers, The New York Times, People, and NPR. The following excerpt speaks to the importance of planned water collection and usage.

Plan for Long-Term Water Usage

After you have taken care of your short-term water needs, your next task is to think about how you’d handle a longer-term water shortage. The sad truth is that the world is changing. Our systems are fragile, and things do fall apart. It is tempting to think that catastrophes happen to other people in faraway places, but more and more often we see a different reality. Families in Flint, Michigan, have been unable to drink the water from their taps for more than a year. In other places, water-main breaks from aging infrastructure have left people without potable water for many weeks. With that in mind, taking a wider view of our water vulnerability is a good idea.

There are five critical steps you can take to ensure your ability to meet your family’s long-term water needs in a crisis.

  1. Assess your risk. Each home has a different level of water vulnerability. Does your water supply depend on electricity? Do you live in a flood or an earthquake zone? Are you able to access surface water?
  2. Protect existing supplies. Should an earthquake or flood damage water lines or contaminate your municipal water source, you must prevent that water from flowing into your home and contaminating the water in your pipes or hot water tank. Locate the intake valve (usually in your basement) and learn how to shut the water off. You may need a pipe wrench and some strong muscle to turn it.
  3. Locate potential sources of water. Take a stroll around

Innovations in Plastic Recycling : Investing and Tackling the Plastic Issue $AKM

Researchers have found that plastic entering the marine environment is set to double by 2040 and, unless the world acts, more than 1.3 billion tones of plastic waste will be dumped on land and in water bodies.

Plastics production requires substantial capital investment and a substantial carbon footprint. Reusing plastics not only reduces these investment needs but can also contribute to reducing total industrial carbon emissions. The global plastic recycling sector was worth around US$ 45.5 billion this past year, the figure is expected to exceed US$ 65 billion by 2026, representing a CAGR of 7.5% during the forecast period.

As we’ve seen in the past 2 years with the Covid pandemic, times of crisis bring an explosion of innovation. As more businesses from all over the world announce their commitment to eliminating all single-use plastics from their operations, products and supply chain, we are witnessing a booming trend of plastic recycling companies committing to climate action with outstanding innovations. Here are a few based on their recycling category.

Upstream Recycling

Alkemy Solutions (TSXV: AKMY) is a company that has a unique β€˜waste-to-product’ process that addresses the recycling of plastic bags, a usual non-starter for most recycling companies in the world. Plastic bags recycling is economically non-viable and global plants won’t touch it despite government incentives. Alkemy has both solved the economics equation and made it extremely profitable to use their recycling process for β€˜dirty plastics’. The process is so efficient that Alkemy’s plant undertakes both recycling and the production of finished products from the plastics they salvage.

Chemical Recycling

Pryme (OB:PRYME) has developed a new approach to an existing and proven chemical recycling technology. They optimized the pyrolysis process by adding proprietary characteristics. In this way, they are able to convert waste plastics into petrochemical products with a high conversion rate, on a large scale and with a low carbon footprint – in a highly cost-efficient way.

Polypropylene Recycling

PureCycle (NASDAQ: PCT) holds a global license to commercialize the only patented solvent-based purification recycling technology, developed by The Procter & Gamble Company, for restoring waste polypropylene (PP) into ultra-pure resin. The proprietary process removes color, odor and other contaminants from recycled feedstock resulting in ultra-pure polypropylene suitable for a

What city do you think would make for the most interesting Fallout setting (and why)

I think a cool one would be New Orleans. Many interesting buildings would be flooded. All of the radiation from upstream that contaminates the water is carried down to there. Everything there would be horribly irradiated whether or not the bombs hit the city. That would mean that, like New Vegas, we could have a city not destroyed by bombs but other events. This adds so much possibility for story. Add to that a rich multi-cultural population, possibly a Mardi Gras beads obsessed family for a memorable quest, likely jazz music, and all the other things it is known for. I think it would make for an interesting setting.

The degradation of the American and Swahili Coast Ecosystems

Introduction(79 words)

Did you know that there are wetlands in Florida where fish live drunk, die from substances brought in from the sea, and enter the sea by human boats? In all places where people live, the surrounding environment rarely changes positively. In many places, we have introduced invasive species, destroyed habitats, raised global temperatures, and reshaped ecosystems, for better or for worse. This short and easy-to-understand essay describes some of the factors involved in biosphere degradation and what they are.

East African change of land-cover(236 words)

It was the geography of Africa that doomed African civilization. A large and brutal desert, the Sahara, in the north, limiting African population growth in northern and sub-Saharan Africa. The center of the continent, Congo, is a huge and hard-to-live rainforest that stretches from the Central African Republic to Namibia and covers the Swahili coast (East Africa). Only through the Industrial Revolution could this rainforest host huge metropolises in the middle of the jungle, vaccinate all of its citizens, and protect them from illness, thus preventing the emergence of human civilization in the region(2). The modernization of East Africa alone has forced many animals to leave their local habitats and move elsewhere; almost all of Uganda is covered by cities and villages. The result is yet unknown; but if similar events, such as the Urbanization of Hawaii, are the future’s foundations, anything good isn't to be expected. Throughout the Swahili coast the area of cropland has grown by 35% between 1988 and 2017, or 18,154,000 (Β± 1,580,000) {1}, this lead to a reduction in woody vegetation was more frequent than succession in the direction of increasing trees and shrubs by approximately 20 million hectares {2}. Another very important point is that this excludes the fact that the area of residence has increased by 44% , which is consistent with rapid population growth observed over the study period over the same time period. πŸ“·
