I normally don't enjoy reading books tht I have seen the movie of , should this be an exception?
What can I say? I re-watched this movie for the third time last night and suddenly picked up on so many things I missed on the first and second viewings.
First of all, the direction and acting are superb and of course, Roger Deakins is just a marvel. Even Roger Ebert said- "The cinematography of Roger Deakins reminds us of the glory that was, and can still be, the Western."
The writing is what really stood out to me. The Coen brothers rarely (if ever) miss. Their vernacular is incredibly unique and funny. Each and every character has a beautiful arc and there's so many things that are mentioned in the beginning that come back to play.
- LaBoeuf remarks about how he was close to killing Tom Chaney from 300 yards away. He could've killed him using his Snipes carbine, but didn't. Cogburn says that there was no chance he could've killed a man from that far. Later on, LaBoeuf saves Cogburn by shooting Ned Pepper from 400 yards away.
- Cogburn tells Mattie how he once charged and killed seven men on horse back with the reigns in his teeth and wielding two pistols. She doesn't believe it (or it could've been LaBoeuf, I can't be too sure). At the climax, Cogburn kills four men while doing the exact same thing.
- Cogburn doesn't put the rope around Mattie when camping because she is too "boney" and "doesn't have enough meat" on her bones for snakes to take a liking to her. Sure enough, Mattie falls into a pit where a rattlesnake bites her, ultimately putting her life in jeopardy. I'd also like to point out how many times the characters mention the deep pit while we as an audience never see it until she falls in.
- Mattie shows Cogburn the pistol she has taken from her father. He basically says it will put her on her ass when she shoots it. When Mattie sees Tom Chaney in the river, she fires a shot and falls into the water. When she gets back up, the gun misfires because the powder is wet. The same thing happens when she kills Chaney and the shotgun kick knocks her into the pit.
- Cogburn tells Mattie "that's some horse you got." Little Blackie is a wild horse that saves Mattie's life by racing endlessly until it essentially is burned out and dies.
Also, the character design is so cool. Before we even see some of the characters, Cogburn and others describe distinct physical features they have. Ex. Tom Chaney having a black powder mark on his cheek and Ned Pepper having a messed up lip.

Just rewatched this recently and just found it thoroughly entertaining throughout. I love the dialogue and mannerisms that these characters possess. I would love to go to a 'Learn how to talk like a Cohen Brother's character' course to spice up my daily conversations haha. The funny thing is I can't remember much of the lines, but its like when you hear a really good song, it takes multiple listenings to get it down.
I watched the Big Lebowski the other day for the first time and made me appreciate Jeff Bridges Rooster Cogburn even more. That guy has a great range in acting. And props to Hailee Steinfeld of course.

When Mattie Ross is giving her servant instructions for taking her father's body home, she says that he should be buried with his Mason's apron on. I didn't realize that the idea of being buried with temple clothes on was borrowed from the Masons too, but it seems obvious in retrospect.
I'm looking seriously at picking up a Lauf True Grit (Race AXS XPLR build) this weekend. It would be my primary bike, used mainly for 20-50 mile weekend rides -- mostly on roads/paved trails, but the roads and trails around are often cracked/bumpy/gritty, and I want to be able to venture onto gravel occasionally (C&O towpath in particular), which my old-school road bike can't do.
Any reservations about the TG for this use case? I'd probably pick up road-biased tires (maybe 38s) for regular use, and save the knobby ones for serious gravel riding.
As the title says, I am capped and now dunno what to do. I am kind of self sufficient and only lose materials as I don't feel like building Standing Stage what-ever so as to atleast work to gather materials.
But apart from waiting for weekends to buy 2 measly training manuals, I am pretty much at a loss what to do.

As till now I am day 45, and on Lumber Mill in Providence setup with a Sniper Tower, a farm that provides just enough for Group of 10.
What I am doing till now is training and exiling 1 person at a time. I have found a good share of people with decent traits and I have got all the community skills to be self sufficient. So, all I do is take someone with random quirk skill, train and exile them to pass time.
Thanks to Trader summit from Discord, I have got loads of stuff. Now, in hindsight, I shouldn't have done so, as I am supremely bored now.
If only the game ran in background while I am helping others in multiplayer, it would have been supremely useful.
Any ideas on how to survive 100 days for the True Grit achievement? I'm playing on dread and in day three. Don't want the gameplay to get boring. Thanks :)
First new bike in 15 years: Lauf True Grit Weekend Warrior AXS XPLR. Crane Creek eeSilk seat post to soften the bumps on long rides. Outfitted with Brooks Scape bags; saddle pack was modified to allow for integrated support and anti-sway stabilizer rack with larger capacity Terrapin 14 L dry bag. Profile Sonic Ergo 43a aero bars for more hand positions and bag mount. Garmin 830 Edge for navigation. When fully loaded with all the bells and whistles + food & 2.0 L water, it comes in at 22.5 kg (~50 lbs.). First trip will be a weekend ride from Santa Cruz to Big Sur.
I’m just curious, anybody that uses TGTS brush packs, what are the best ones to get? I have the infinite pulp and the krafttones sets but I just wanna know what should be next on my list. Thanks!

Looking for an all around bike, I call it my compromise road bike as I mainly ride MTB.
I am on the bigger side and am using this bike to ride from the house (paved... ?) and whatever else I can find along the way. I'm not a racer, just enjoy putting miles (speed is also good) on the bike and having a good time riding it. Not looking to lay flat on the bike, more of an upright ride all day position.
I live in south AZ, so questionable pavement, or rocks and hard pack washboard for gravel.
Looking to be comfortable for longer rides and shed some weight.
I owned the original Diverge (rebranded Roubaix) but it wasn't my jam, but this new one was pretty fun to ride. A friend then told me the Lauf is very similar in geometry, but a better value. As I have no experience with the ride quality of the Lauf and keep reading that it is a race oriented bike, I am wondering if the bike is just super stiff and transfers everything to the rider, minus what's covered by the fork>
Size 56 for Specialized or a medium in the Lauf ( I am on the cusp of sizes for both bikes at 5'11").
All the numbers are within a few mm of each other, so it might come down to frame construction.
I did notice the seat stays on the Specialized attach lower on the seat tube, would that indicate a more compliant rear end? I know the stack is greatly different, but the specialized seems to be measuring to the end of the future shock (610mm) while Lauf has a Stack (564mm) and a stack to handlebar (605 - 651mm) that would seem to match Specialized better.
I know the seat tube is shorter on the Specialized than on the Lauf, giving it more exposed seat post, therefore more flex.
The Lauf is 100% better bang for the buck, but it's nothing if the ride is really harsh.
Any experience on the future Shock vs the Lauf fork?

This dip made everyone realize again what we’re striving for. We may disagree and squabble but our underlying personal motivations and our desire for apes to be free to not just survive this life but actually live, remains. I don’t know how much longer it will be before the squeeze but I believe that no matter the strife that may arise in the sub, we’ll be able to overcome it.
Friendly reminder that holding on the way up is just as important if not more important than during dips. We cannot sell at $100, $1,000 or even $5,000.
