My father is nominated for Best Sound Mixing at this year's Academy Awards. Movie buffs of Reddit, how much do you care about these categories?
About 10 years ago Mike Meyers presented the award and his lead-in was a big joke about how no one gives a shit. He said something like "and now the moment everyone has been waiting for, to see their favorite sound mixers like Chet Flippy and Brad Hrjehwjrkhre..." My dad thought it was hilarious, but every sound mixer he knows was pissed as all hell. Since then the Academy has tried to make a big deal about the category to apologize, but I was just curious about what the public thinks. Thanks Reddit!

Do you think 2001 should have won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Direction, and Best Screenplay?
Do you think 2001 should have won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Art Direction, and Best Screenplay?
I personally think it's a travesty it did not win any of these, kind of like Blade Runner losing Best Art Direction to Gandhi (?????????) or Raiders of the Lost Ark losing Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Score to Chariots of Fire.
I also think Kubrick should have won Best Director for the Shining. Best Cinematography (Steadicam) would have been deserved for the movie, too.
What do you think?

My goal for the year is to watch at least one Best Picture Academy Award nominated film beginning with the first year*
We're currently on the 5th Academy Awards from 1931/32. We are only choosing one film from each year. Sometimes the film we end up watching is the only one available to watch, so I'm learning to go a little outside the box of what I would normally watch.
We decided to watch the nominated films instead of just the winners since this will give us more options, especially since not all the winners are readily available. This was also the selling point to get my husband on board.
So far, we've watched:
*none of the three films from the first Academy Awards from 1927 are available to watch
In Old Arizona (1928)
The Love Parade (1929)
The Front Page (1930)
Today we're catching Five Star Final with Edward G Robinson from 1931.

I watched the Academy Award for Best Picture-winning Crash for the first time since it came out and it was fucking terrible
I was honestly shocked at how poorly itβs aged. Itβs like an out of touch white guyβs fantasia on what race relations in America are like. Brendan Fraser needs to pin a medal on a minority guy but doesnβt want to give it to an Iraqi named Saddam (Iraq War references yay). Matt Dillon sexually assaults a black woman but then he saves her life and heβs suddenly not as bad? Sandra Bullock is rude af to her Mexican maid but then she falls down the stairs. Guess who calls the ambulance? The Maid! Sheβs not racist anymore! The opening scene features 2 black guys talking about being profiled and how awful it is to be assumed to be criminalsβ¦right before they carjack someone. The fact that this film beat Brokeback Mountain, Munich, or the unnominated A History of Violence or CachΓ© is astonishing. Reddit says a lot of hyperbolic things, but one thing is for damn sure: Crash is a truly awful movie lol
