I'm not here to debate the merits of his hiring. That can be done here. However, I noticed a lot of people on that thread either hated his hiring or loved his hiring with a few "mehs" sprinkled in there too.
I'm curious to see if your age was a factor in your feelings. For example, i'm in my 30s and I distinctly remember watching on live TV the absolute pounding the Huskers laid on their opponents. I can 100% see why living in the past isn't the best strategy, but I can also see why an administration wants to bring in those players to help steer their program back to its origins. Again, not debating this in this post, but I was just curious to see if your age was a factor in your belief if this was a good/bad hire. As always GBR.
I was listening to parts of "The Nick Handley" show while he had Dirk Chatelain on. I was in and out so missed some of the discussion, but I know at one point they were discussing the AD position. I think they mentioned Ed Stewart lacking experience being a potential issue. Then they touched on Trev Alberts. They talked about what a great leader he was, but that they weren't hearing anything in the rumor mill about him. They both seemed incredulous to this and that they had no idea why his name wasn't coming up more.
The thing is, as soon as Moos' "re-fire-ment" went down, there were people on hear speculating. Right away most posts that mentioned Trev as a candidate were pretty passionately against due to his handling of the football and wrestling programs at UNO.
Did Nick and Dirk really not get this? Maybe they don't spend their days on reddit, but, it seemed pretty clear to me why a lot of people would have reservations. Did they just not want to even mention that for some reason?
I apologize in advance, I have only been a Husker fan since I moved to Lincoln in 2013 β so I am still learning more about the programβs past every day.
That being said, would Trev Alberts be a good candidate to replace SE? I have seen/heard his name a few times this week and I seems like it would almost be a no-brainer to go after him. It seems like UNOβs athletic department has faired well under his direction β their hockey team has become a perennial power and their basketball team has seemed to be on the up-and-up with a win over Iowa (at Iowa) last season. If I am not mistaken, he also brought UNO into D1 with the Summit League ( at the expense of losing the football team, similar to Wichita State).
Anyway, I think he would be a perfect hire in terms of getting the football program back on track β not that football is the only sport that matters... However, a guy with his background, as a player, seems like he would have no problem spending, and spending BIG, on the program.
If Nebraska ever wants to get back to a national power, we have to be willing to shell out at least 6mil-7mil a year β over twice as much as we pay Riley now. I think that Riley will have, and deserves, at least 2018 β but the next hire MUST be huge and the University has got to pony up. Bringing in a guy like Alberts, this year, would give him a year or two to really evaluate the market, woo the boosters, convince the university, etc.
To me it almost seems to make so much sense that it seems too good of a situation to be true.
Maybe I have no idea what Iβm talking about though β like I said, Iβve only been a rabid fan since 2013.
GBR!
One more thing, here are some coaching salaries:

Do you guys see anything wrong with this list? Maybe that Nebraska is 43? Yikes! Canβt win if we arenβt willing to pay!
