A list of puns related to "Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons"
[July/August 2039]
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, commonly referred to the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT, provides for a path to leave the agreement.
Article X of the NPT states:
>Each Party shall in exercising its national sovereignty have the right to withdraw from the Treaty if it decides that extraordinary events, related to the subject matter of this Treaty, have jeopardized the supreme interests of its country. It shall give notice of such withdrawal to all other Parties to the Treaty and to the United Nations Security Council three months in advance. Such notice shall include a statement of the extraordinary events it regards as having jeopardized its supreme interests.
The Republic of Turkey is a sovereign state, formed in the vision of Mustafa Kemal AtatΓΌrk reaching the highest level of respected, developed nations. It has closely followed this treaty for the past 79 years but will cease to do so in three months time.
Turkey cannot accept its aim of freezing the geopolitical balance of the year 1967 for eternity. For the sake of limiting the spread of these horrible, devastating weapons, we allowed the 20th century temporary downturn of the ancient Turkish civilization to be locked into the status quo. However, many exceptions have been made for other nations since and to act as if this has gone unnoticed would be an insult to the Republic.
The states of India and Pakistan were allowed to keep their nuclear weapons as non-signatories, creating the precedent that an established fact could be created in which nuclear powers not described in the NPT could keep their weapons. Israel has ambiguously denied the existence of its arsenal, also a non-recognized power allowed an exception. When North Korea sought nuclear weapons, the world watched and let it happen.
Turkey watched these and did nothing. After all, they were mistakes and failures of genuine non-proliferation intentions. This all changed in 2018 -- with four new nuclear states being rushed into the treaty, breaking the spirit of its original intention and greatly spreading the weapon. Canada has now tested a nuclear weapon and the Great Lakes Republic shows all signs of moving down that path as well.
Finally, the second use of nuclear weapons as tactical weapons in the North American conflict has established a use precedent which Turkey cannot ignore in its strategic thinking.
In short,
... keep reading on reddit β‘I personally feel singing non-proliferation treaties so early was a mistake as it gave the monopoly of the force to the world powers.
I really think the region should acquire nuclear weapons one way or another in self-defense.
After reading up on the INF treaty, I see that it only applies to ground-based weapons, and only those with a 500-5000km range.
I have not been able to find any commentary on why this is the case...
Why was it productive to limit these ranges, while allowing ICBMs and marine system to continue?
Is there a particular way in which this limitation changed the political climate at the time for the better despite the obviously uncovered cases?
Was it simply a gesture of good faith without much meaning since the others were still allowed?
Was it a matter of settling for whatever you could get?
