The "Bloody Code" of England; by 1688, there were 50 offences that were punishable by death, that number had almost quadrupled by 1776, and it reached 220 by the end of the century. The Judgement of Death Act of 1823 relaxed this, limiting execution for all crimes except treason and murder.

>In 1688 there were 50 offences on the statute book punishable by death, but that number had almost quadrupled by 1776,[1] and it reached 220 by the end of the century.[2] Most of the new laws introduced during that period were concerned with the defence of property, which some commentators have interpreted as a form of class suppression of the poor by the rich.[3] George Savile, 1st Marquess of Halifax, expressed a contemporary view when he said that "Men are not hanged for stealing horses, but that horses may not be stolen".[4] Grand larceny was one of the crimes that drew the death penalty; it was defined as the theft of goods worth more than 12 pence, about one-twentieth of the weekly wage for a skilled worker at the time.[5] As the 18th century proceeded, jurors often deliberately under-assessed the value of stolen goods, in order to avoid a mandatory death sentence.[5]

>As the 17th century drew to a close, lawmakers sought a less harsh punishment that might still deter potential offenders; penal transportation with a term of indentured servitude became the more common punishment. This trend was continued by the Transportation Act 1717 (16 Geo. 3 c.43), which regulated and subsidised the practice, until its use was suspended by the Criminal Law Act 1776.[6] With the American Colonies already in active rebellion, parliament claimed its continuance "is found to be attended with various inconveniences, particularly by depriving this kingdom of many subjects whose labour might be useful to the community, and who, by proper care and correction, might be reclaimed from their evil course". This law would become known as the Hard Labour Act and the Hulks Act for both its purpose and its result. With the removal of the important transportation alternative to the death penalty, it would in part prompt the use of prisons for punishment and the start of prison building programmes.[7] In 1785 Australia would be deemed a suitably desolate place to transport convicts; transportation would resume, now to a specifically planned penal colony, with the departure of the First Fleet in 1787. It has been estimated that over one-third of all criminals convicted between 1788 and 1867 were transported to Australia, including Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania). Some criminals could escape transportation if they agreed to join the army. Jurist William Blackstone said of the Bloody Code:

>"It is a melancholy truth, that among the variety of actions which men are daily

ELI5: Act of Toleration 1649 in Maryland

What was the act about? And why did Cecil Calvert help make it pass, as he was a Catholic? And after that Protestant revolt, why was the Act revoked even though it protected all Christians?

Thanks in advance! It's in my AMSCO textbook and I've tried looking online, but I'm not completely sure what the act is about or why it was passed. Maryland was mostly composed of Protestant farmers with a couple Catholic elites and a Catholic proprietor, but from what I read online the act protected all Christians, so I'm not sure why the Catholics would ever help pass that act to also protect the Protestants?

Pyrrhonism and toleration of terrible things?

Hey Internet!

I'm stuck on a difficult point in my research on Pyrrhonism, and so wanted to seek out help. As far as I understand, Pyrrhonism claims that we should accept the obvious things- like that fire feels hot. In order to reach ataraxia, we should thus reject any judgement of non-obvious things- like God or high moral concepts.

But, in that case, that means that I should suspend judgement on such terrible things as Nazism or genocide, for they aren't inherently bad in themselves. Even so, that seems to me to be non acceptable, especially in regards to the victims.

What do you think about that?

Belief in the afterlife and the toleration of abuse at work

At least in the United States, where despite an overall decline in religiosity, evangelical/fundamentalist Christianity still holds a position of social prominence and privilege, I can't help but think that there are many who endure all manner of abuse from their bosses in addition to grueling work schedules for low pay because of a deeply held, culturally ingrained belief that their suffering will be rewarded in a heavenly afterlife of eternal bliss while their tormentors will be forced to endure an eternity of conscious torment. In conjunction with this would be the belief that if they stood up to their bosses and demanded better pay and working conditions, then they would risk incurring the wrath of God and be damned to hell.

I realize this sounds farfetched on its face but does anyone here think there's any truth to this?

How did your wife react to you crossdressing? Immediate Divorce? Drifting Apart? Toleration? Participation? Also interested in the wife's perspective.

Hi everyone! First post.

I'm in my early 30's, and I've been secretly crossdressing here and there for a long time. I have come to think of it as a fetish, due to the way it excites me. It has no bearing on my sexual orientation, and I do not wish to transition (although I would love to be a real woman for just a short time, if that were possible haha).

During the 99.5% of my life that I was not crossdressing, I met and married my beautiful wife and have had children with her. My greatest fear is that she will find out and divorce me... taking the kids, humiliating me in front of my whole family... just messy stuff. I don't however think this is likely to happen, we do have a very happy marriage and she is all aboard for LGBT+ rights (and she's a RuPaul fan to boot, for what that's worth). Buuuuut, at the same time, she is a straight woman who's not a big fan of change, so I don't know. At this point I'm equally afraid of her reaction to me having such a big secret as to her reaction to the secret itself, so I'm curious if anyone would be willing to share their experiences. Did it go bad? Really bad? Or maybe surprisingly good?

Thanks!

Update: Well, I told her last night! She did not see it coming lol. She took it pretty well though, no hysterical weeping, shouting or other drama. She still has some concerns about me wanting to fully transition one day, but I think I've done pretty well to ease those concerns. By the end of the night, we were already discussing makeup haha. Wish I had done this sooner! We left it at a mutual "if you want to talk more about it, feel free to", neither one of us wanted to get into sharing pictures of me yet. I'll give her some more time to let the news sink in before I bring it up again. Thanks for the encouragement everyone, I owe a bit of this to you <3

Update 2: Oh, and I have stopped considering this just a fetish, and am coming to accept the label "dual gender". After some soul-searching, it just fits better. Thanks again :)

England and the Monarchy still haven't recovered from 1688

In many ways the problem still goes back to Henry VIII, his breakaway from Christendom and subsequent takeover of church land, giving it to the robber barons creating a permanent new class of people who bend reality at their will and serve the god of unlimited money and power. But the "Glorious" Revolution of 1688 signified the critical defiant rejection of Christendom and thus, truth. Where the Whigs traded legitimacy, order and truth for, again, unlimited money and power, and the ability to seemingly bend reality according to their will. Whereupon the truth and legitimacy of Europe's Christian foundations were thrown away for the temporary things of the world. Where a small group of people devised a plan to overstep all existing mechanisms and shape the future of England, and by consequence Europe, according to their will. Very reminiscent of the devil's temptation of Jesus in the desert where He was promised essentially unregulated and unlimited power and money if He serve him. For the Whigs knew not the proper place and interplay of a king, his subjects, and religion, that was lost in the Reformation. They knew only of what was promised to them after a rejection of the established order.

Is it any wonder that England and Europe have subsequently become a target of the onslaught from godless liberals, anarchists, usurers, revolutionaries to eventually topple? How are they to defend themselves? They have severed their own legs and cut their tongue from which to speak. The inheritors of Middle Ages Christendom accepted the devil's offer, only the devil lies and it has sealed their destruction. What does the British monarchy stand for if not the seat oppression and injustice according to the revolutionaries, and to the God-fearing, the former guardians who sold out their realm and ducked out of their mission in exchange for the promises of the world? You cannot rebel and cut out the legitimate father of a family and expect no repercussions. The dam of godlessness and wickedness that fell with Bastille is now broken, and to defend us we have the mercenaries decended from illegitimate usurpers who know not of God, but of money and power.

I'm not here to debate James II as a king, thats missing the point. That has been done and can be done elsewhere. Those who know will know exactly what I'm talking about with this post.
