SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

The Imperial and Celestial Line

Hello there! I wanted to share with you some thoughts about Temeraire's breed and the explanation Naomi Novik makes about it in the books. I put this in the category of spoiler just in case anyone didn't know the following information, but even so I'll warn you again: SPOILERS AHEAD

Ok, so, at the beginning of the saga Temeraire is identified as an Imperial dragon (Qin-Lung) and only after he matures and develops a head ruff, tendrils and the ability known as Divine Wind he's finally recognized as a Celestial (Tien-Lung). When Temeraire and Laurence travel to China they show us how Celestials are extremely rare and they can only reproduce with Imperials. Now comes the important part: we jump to the 8th novel, Blood of Tyrants, when Matsudaira explains Laurence how in the past the servants of the Yuan Emperor went to Japan and stole "the last egg of the Divine Wind" from a temple after murdering the rest of that breed, then going back to China.

Here is my question: was the Divine Wind line literally the Celestial breed, and in China they used the dragon born from the last egg to produce the Imperials and the Celestials we know now?

I kinda think it could be the case, that would explain the similarity between the two races, and also the legends involving Japanese dragons creating catastrophic storms (it's theorised that the Sui-Riu are responsible from that myth, but who knows). However, I have a different theory, so bear with me for a few more lines:

In the second book it's explained to us how Imperials, that are way more common than Celestials, are sometimes offered as a mating reward for Shen-Lungs (a common blue breed), and in the short story "Succession" Qian remembers how her brother Chu had to mate with twenty-three Imperials before siring Lien. So, if Imperials are more abundant and they are paired with less "noble" dragons without question or worrying, it's not very likely that all of them are descendants of the same Japanese dragon that sired the first Chinese Celestials. Also, they're literally named "Imperials", I suspect if they weren't in China already that would have been the name for the Celestials, since they always have royal companions. My guess here is the following: Imperials were a Chinese breed, probably distantly related to the Japanese Celestials (just the same way French Pêcheurs and British Widowmakers are related), and when the Divine Wind egg hatched in China, the baby was paired with Imperials, the most compatible breed, p

Dropped my best ever dad joke & no one was around to hear it

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.

I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!

Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies 😂
