A list of puns related to "The Pillars of the Earth"
Having slogged through Ana Karanina and War and Peace in 2019, I was a little hesitant to star the pillars this year. However, the book turned out to be a pleasant surprise.
I never got bored reading it; the story captivated me so much that I finished the book in less than a month. The only other book with which I was so captivated was East of Eden.
Wonderful story telling!
Hi,
I have this book on my shelf and I am wondering if this series is worth the read?
Any non spoiler opinions?
Thanks
So I know that The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett belongs to the historical fiction genre, but Iโd like to know whether there are also some fantasy elements in the book. Since some Goodreads users tagged it as โfantasyโ. Iโve searched, but canโt find any other clues that point to the fantasy genre. Could someone who read the book tell me if it is purely historical fiction or that it can be argued that it contains fantasy elements as well? Thanks!

Forgive the title gore, apparently I fell asleep halfway through my sentence and changed tenses...
You may have guessed I have mixed feelings about this title. I'm nearly done, and have been playing for close to 2 weeks, and I've fallen asleep playing it every time.
It was something my wife bought before she changed consoles, and I'd avoided it because it didn't catch my attention, but I was needing a break from a hard combat game. Well...a break it is.
It is a historical game, set in the 1100s in England. It follows 3 main characters and switches between acting for them. They, and the set of supporting characters are well fleshed out, and have great stories. Politics and religion abound, and it is interesting to see the relationship between the two during the time period.
Almost everything is dialog (great voice acting) and choosing reactions. There are a handful of button pushing places, and slow walking around. I love a good story game, but the pace is glacial. I wasn't sure how I would like the animated art style, but it's become one of my favorite things about the game. Beautiful.
I keep considering quitting, but the story has drawn me in. My wife makes fun of me constantly for continuing (she doesn't do story games).
5/10, equally boring and intriguing
I am looking for historical drama series that focus on specific regions/areas/constructions, and go through how they change through time like Pillars of the Earth. Does anyone here have any recommendation?
I like long books that follow a character for a while/their whole lives. These two books are some of my favourites so Iโm looking for others.
So with the last episode released, I dove into Daedalic's adaptation of the famous novel. I'd been looking forward to this one quite a bit, since I was genuinely intrigued by the idea of someone trying to do a direct adaptation of a major work of literature as a Telltale-ish interactive story. After all, games adapted from prose novels at all are pretty rare, much less ones billing themselves as a legitimate adaptation done in collaboration with the author.
But as much as I wanted it to work, I can't help feeling like Daedalic -sadly true to their name- got overambitious.
Which is certainly not to say it was all bad. The backgrounds and overall design were really beautiful, in a 12th Century muddy brown kind of way. It also had legitimately excellent voice acting - grounded and realistic, but without being flat or uninvolved. And that's good since large portions of the game are spent staring at the standard adventure game side-on shot as characters discuss politics at length. At times, it feels more like an audio drama with accompanying slideshow than an animated adventure.
They also went further than Telltale with their story branching options. The overall story arc proceeds as in the book, but you're allowed to make a lot of changes. Multiple characters from the book can live or die depending on your actions. (I was particularly surprised I managed to keep alive through the whole thing.) And it seems like the final episode has plenty of branching set up, so that it pays off a lot of earlier decisions.
But it just can't overcome one single central problem: They should have picked an easier book to adapt.
TPOTE is huge. The novel is a thousand pages, and even the chopped-down (but quite good) miniseries was nearly as long as The Lord Of The Rings. And in adapting it into game form, they had to cut it down so drastically that it often has very little narrative flow. It's a "reader's digest" version, plucking out one scene in ten to actually adapt while quickly using narration, lore text, or other tricks to fill in all the many plot elements they can't cover.
To describe the narrative as "choppy" doesn't even cover it. Even the character drama often falls flat due to how much material is cut. And I honestly wonder how well newcomers to TPOTE would be able to follow the larger story.
Also, the game clearly suffers from having a relatively low budget. Nearly all action happens offscreen, or far in the distan

I know these are kind of random games, but any help deciding between them would be a big help.
I've had these books on my to-read list for a long time and I finally own a copy of American Gods by Neil Gaiman and The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I can't wait to start reading!
Both of these novels get a lot of hype and attention, is it all justified? What do you think makes them stand out?
I only watched three episodes of the Amazon series of American Gods because I didn't feel it handled what seemed to be quite a drawn out plot. Loved the style, loved the Gods, didn't like how it handled the plot. How does the novel compare? Has anyone televised Pillars of the Earth?
