A list of puns related to "The Barley Mow, Marylebone"
So I posted 2 weeks ago about a new job I had been hired for and that was ignoring my texts regarding my next shift. It's been a nightmare and I really just need to put this out there as many are looking for work. I won't mention the name of the manager.
I was hired during an interview and told to come in for training. I worked 2 shifts serving. I mentioned to the bar manager that it was 3 years since I last served so I would need some training. I asked plenty of questions, making sure I was doing everything right as I could as a new hire. I helped other servers also. It was super busy on my 2nd shift on a thursday afternoon. My tables were happy and gave me great tips. The manager who hired me sat down to do my paperwork. Everything seemed fine. There was no issues and she said she'd contact me to let me know my next shift. Weekend goes by. Nothing. I texted and emailed. Next day, nothing, I texted again and emailed. Next day, nada. I started getting anxiety to the point of having a panic attack. I told the manager I quit my other job for this one. Still no reply. Called the bar and it was busy. I posted on reddit about this situation and everyone told me to start looking for another job. It was frustrating because I was left in the dark for almost a week. Not making money and wondering what was going on with my new job. I did look for new jobs but still frustrating as hell.
Thursday she emailed me. Apparently there was an attachment I didn't open until Friday am. She wrote a letter of termination. So confused. I get that you don't have to give a reason but I think it was super unfair to hire someone, leave them hanging for a week and then fire them. Maybe I wasn't a good fit I don't know. And I know some people will @ me on here because it's reddit but to hire someone, ghost them for nearly a week and fire them without any communication during a pandemic is cruel. At least text me and let me know hey sorry not going to work. She also wrote the letter of termination on the 22nd and I didn't get the email until the 24th. I did manage to find a new job in a different field starting this week. I think I will stay away from bar jobs from now on, they seem to be chaotic right now with things reopening
Oh yeah and they didn't pay me. When she emailed me saying she didn't owe a reason, she did ask for my bank info so I could get paid. Payday was Friday and nothing is in my account after I did email my bank info. Also they took my cash and card tips on my
... keep reading on reddit β‘I was walking past the former location of the Barely Mow on Bank yesterday (beside the Mayfair and Quinn's. I was trying to remember all the businesses that preceded Barley Mow in that location.
My memory is ...
1980s - It was a Roadhouse-type place called 'Wizards' early 1990s - A vegetarian place, can't remember the name late 1990s - something else .. I don't think it lasted long early 2000s - Barley Mow
Was there anything else? Does anyone remember the names of the restaurants that came and went at that location?
The Barley Mow are currently looking for a chef de partie and a kitchen assistant, if interested contact William McLean on 07539154996
I am sure that itβs pronounced differently on the underground vs the overground!
I don't know if it was an off night for them; but I did not have a good time there yesterday.
Me and some other people had just gone out for one of my co-worker's birthday's; dinner at The Grand, and then off to The Mayfair to watch a late showing of "The Room."
It was a great night, and so after the movie was finished (around 11:30), we decided to walk over the half-block to Barley Mow's. It was pretty open, there were maybe three other tables of people (3-4) and a couple of couples.
The 6 of us went to sit down in a booth; the waitress came over and said "What do you want." Working in the service industry myself, I was a little taken aback by the rudeness of her introduction.
We ordered a couple of pitchers, and they were brought to us; she held out glasses and said "take these," and then walked away.
We had all been respectful, and continued to be so for the rest of the night. Right around last call, I was doing a little magic trick for the group; they were laughing, and one of the waitresses or bartenders sitting together just said "Shut up."
I probably won't be going back there. Was it just a bad night? Or are they usually like this?
Edit
It seems that some people have had good experiences here and some bad. Perhaps we just went during an off night. Thanks for your responses people!
After a day in the sun and seeing Yuengling as our only option for beer, my boyfriend and I were desperate for a trip to a craft brewery. Barley Mow was the closest and did not disappoint! The bar and outdoor areas were packed with fans of beer and burlesque. The show went on outside, but the most impressive performance goes to the two person bar team serving 100+. They moved fast, kept glasses filled & cleaned, and still had time to provide samples and amazing service to us. Speaking of samples- wow! The beer here is incredible. We had Son of a Seabiscuit (a hot pepper amber that does not disappoint the spice lovers), The Unkindness (a deliciously hoppy black ale) and the Nuada (a chocolate stout that finishes with coffee notes). They also offered a Mad Beach beer- an Imperial Sweet Potato Ale that made me wish it was fall again. If you're reading this, stop what you're doing and take a trip to Barley Mow. Enjoy!
Surviving on ramen, while working 50+ hpw as standard, to live in a shit town.
Or is it always going to be like a survival game with scarce resources? I always keep aiming for one kill headshots and it's fun in a different way but I'd rather go nuts shooting a gun.
I just unlocked the third camp in the story...no spoilers please.
So I live in the front house of an attached unit. Down the driveway is unit b and we have a garage each that's internally accessible in between our houses. We get the front lawn and they get the back lawn, we share the driveway and a tiny walkway down the other side of the house.
Our lease began at the start of the year. We rent through an agency and have had no issues other than the lawns. We have been issued 2 breaches since the beginning of November. The first was understandable as its our job to mow fortnightly and pull weeds and we weren't doing that. We did a great job of it. Did the berm, the front lawns and the driveway all the way back to where their back lawns begin and did the walkways weeds up to the part where their garage meets our garage.
It's easy to tell the difference between the properties as our half is more freshly painted and maintained (gutters, roof etc). We assume different landlords probably own the units based on the years they were sold and the maintenance however we do not know.
The second was an unofficial breach that came after one of their 'buisness owners' drove past our house and was less than impressed. That was 3.5 weeks after we had done and passed the previous breach.
They have now emailed us to say our lawns looked great but we must not have realised that the area by our clothesline also needed to be mowed and weeded. We don't have a clothesline. The other unit does behind their house. Nobody has ever mentioned this, it is not in our contract, pictures or word of their lawn and clothesline were never advertised. They have never verbally mentioned it or in writing. We have never stepped foot back there before.
Please help because a child could get lost in the lawns back there. It is up to my waist. The idea of working outside my neighbours windows feels weird.
I'll probably talk to my neighbour about it, he's chill. The agency never replies to me as of recent. I'm just confused if this is a normal ask by an agent or landlord. In what situation is this normal?
As an ecologist and avid gardener, I figured I'd give this PSA. Lots of beneficial insects lay eggs and nest in the leaf litter in your yard (including most of your future pollinators), and by mowing the leaves you are destroying them and their habitat. The best practice is to leave them - they'll decompose naturally by spring, enriching your lawn and garden with nutrients, and you'll give all your insect buddies a chance to survive and fulfill their important roles in the food web as pollinators and food for birds. Plus it saves you a ton of work!
If you are absolutely required to do something with your leaves per an HOA or whatever, consider just gently raking them and placing them in your garden beds or a compost pile to decompose. If you're instersted in some other benefits of leaving the leaves, check out this page: https://xerces.org/blog/leave-the-leaves
Edit: well this blew up! RIP my inbox. Thank you to everyone who made thoughtful, level-headed comments - we have some interesting conversations happening!
He just didnβt cut it.
