Tales from the Yawning Portal and Primus

Anyone feel like the fellow shown in the cover art of Tales From The Yawning Portal looks like he's modelled after Les Claypool's bartender character from the Tommy The Cat video?

I know it's a classic bartender design trope, but I cannot unsee the fellow on the cover as anything aside from Les telling us about that bawdy tomcat in O'Malley's Alley.

Tales from the Yawning Portal - 3D Printed!

Here it is!

Hello again everyone! In this gallery I'm showing the 3D printed monsters from the amazing book "Tales from the Yawning Portal". This is part of my near 4 year adventure in 3D modeling and printing every single monster from every 5e book. So much material, so little time!

These were all modeled in Blender, and were printed in either resin or PLA. All files are free and access is under each image.

In case you haven't seen my previous work here are my galleries:

Monster Manual A-Z

Appendix A

Appendix B

Updated Chromatic Dragons

"Princes of the Apocalypse"

"Out of the Abysss"

"Storm King's Thunder"

"Volo's Guide to Monsters"

Here is my patreon in case you'd like to support my efforts. I also offer some patrons access to my Google Drive with all my files

Onward to Tomb of Annihilation! That'll be a hell of a project :-D I love your feedback as usual.

Enjoy!

Character Suggestion for Tales from the Yawning Portal/Sunless Citadel

My boyfriend is running Tales from the Yawning Portal and we started at the Sunless Citadel. (TLDR at the bottom)

I am a very heavy RP player, so this whole "Combat Heavy" thing is new to me. I've played a few one shots, 2 longer campaigns, and I DM'd a homebrew campaign for about a year, but I have not played every race or class by any stretch.

Anyway - I played a Life Cleric (RIP) and I died last session deep in the Sunless Citadel.

The remaining party members after last session are: a warforged Paladin, Half-elf Rogue, and Minotaur Barbarian.

This was my first time playing a Cleric - ever, and it was really hard. I like to stay true to my character, and we had two NPCs with us and I really should have left them behind and healed up myself and other PCs, but it felt so wrong. I know this isn't the "campaign" to love your character, but everyone is aware that's my play style and I'm pretty sure I'm in for a really beautiful little last rites at the beginning of next session for my beloved Hilde (She was basically a down-home Southern Baptist - picture a mom that is perpetually disappointed, but also loves you).

Anyway - I need advice for what character to roll-up next.

I feel like the party needs a healer still, but I'm not crazy about trying my hand at being a cleric again. I was thinking about rolling a goblin (there are a lot of goblins and they killed Hilde and our Bard last session) and trying to win the party over. I love the RP aspects of that, but I'm not crazy about the gameplay. I would die. Quickly.

Thus far in this game, I've realized I need to be beefy. I was thinking about possibly playing a druid for the beat shape HP and the healing spells - but I'm not crazy about being some hermit hippy. Maybe some ideas of how to spice up this build?

Then I also really loved the idea of playing a real douche-y beefcake character, like someone who always says "The Best Defense is a good Offense" and is a little chaotic. Picture the type of DnD character who's real life equivalent is someone who goes trophy hunting and takes a selfie with a dead lion. That type of character. I don't know what class/race that would be though. Ideas? I don't want to step on anyone's toes and we already have a pally and barbarian.

TL;DR: My life cleric died and I need a new character for the sunless citadel that will be both fun to RP and actually helpful to the party.

Pre-existing party members: half-elf rogue, warforged pally, minotaur barbar

Should I(a newish DM) do a Tales from the Yawning Portal campaign?

I want to dm a game with some friends after school at a local game shop and I was thinking that TYP could be fun, having the Yawning Portal be a sort of hub for the party to return to after each adventure.

My idea is that they go to the bar and talk with Durnan and some of the other patrons, they are given word of a new adventure and head out, wash rinse repeat for a few chapters until about chapter 4-5 where I could throw in the Last Orders of the Yawning Portal to shake things up, then continue until the Tomb of Horrors(or something more noteworthy to end on).

This is just an idea. Again, I have only a bit of experience DMing and idk if this is too much. Has anyone else done something similar and could you tell me about your experience?

So we just finished the lost mines of phandelver and during that I changed some things arround Thunderthree to do some forshadowing for the next campaign. I've picked 4 dungeons from the yawning portal (sunless citadel, white plum mountain, forge of fury and hidden shrine). My players have to travel to these dungeons to find something in each to complete this new campaign. But they are now lvl 5, any ideas and tips on how to make it more of a challenge?

How would a Mastermind fit in Tales From the Yawning portal?

Hello! So as the title suggests, I went ahead and made a drow mastermind in search of some guy named Aiden(Which was a former character of mine) the drow doesn’t know that Aiden is his brother, but he does know that he has been a hero.

But for the love of Lolth, I can’t fit any of the skills of a mastermind in the campaign! I’ve made a crossbow support rogue, standing in the back and fire arrows in hopes that our Dragonborn barbarian is out in the front. But I can’t use my expertise skills(Insight and Deception)

Getting in character is easy. The drow was promised by the Zhentarim that if he keeps the bard unharmed for long enough(Which is a noble and the drow hates and tortures nobles) then he’ll get his hands on Aiden. But I feel like a ranger that chose forest as his natural terrain, and the entire campaign takes place in the tundras.

I’ve spoken with the DM, who’s a friend of mine, and he has mentioned that these skills will come in play but they aren’t showing signs. We’ve just reached Red Larch(We’re level 2) and every other player had his own spotlight. And besides rolling above average, and having 1 hit point remaining for a session and a half, I didn’t quite have mine. The road is ahead to come, but the road doesn’t show us many cities that a mastermind can...mastermind.

Can you fine folks help out?

DMing Tales from the Yawning Portal at AL events: Full List of Restrictions to keep characters "Legal"?

I will probably be starting a "campaign" through the Yawning Portal, starting with The Sunless Citadel. I hope to be as transferable as possible, both being able to hop into a dungeon, or a later dungeon, or leave a dungeon to do other stories.

What are the total restrictions for the players and for the DMs in order for a YP campaign to be legal?

My understanding, so far (edited based on the comments left and referencing the guide): (Please correct any points that are wrong)

  • Characters must be in the tier that matches the starting level of the dungeon to enter it.

  • Characters can only start each YP dungeon/chapter once.

  • Characters can do other AL adventures, and then return to the campaign as long as it is the same DM/"instance". This only applies if the additional AL Exp does not push them out of the assigned level range (or tier).

  • If a character exceeds the level limit of an HC adventure due to experience obtained during that HC, they may continue to do it.

  • They can't do another AL event with that character and then return to a dungeon they already started.

  • As a DM, I absolutely cannot add any new magic items or loot.

  • As a DM, I can change monster # and type around slightly, but cannot assign non-combat EXP. Any experience must be from what they face.

  • Any character 1-4 can start Sunless Citadel.

  • Any character 1-4 can start Forge of Fury, even if they will need to level up ASAP to not get crushed if starting from 1.

  • All characters must be AL legal for any to continue to be AL legal.

I don't want to "pull punches" and have the adventure be relatively lethal compared to how I've run 2-hour AL Tier 1s in the past.

Opinions on the 5E conversions from Tales From the Yawning Portal?

I'm particularly interested in what experiences folks have had with White Plume Mountain, Dead in Thay, and Against the Giants. I'm about to run WPM, and if the group enjoys it, we may go on to one of the other two listed.

I'm most interested in actual play experiences from the 5E versions, but if there are any among you who has played the originals, and only read the news ones, I'd still like to know what you think!

Tales from the Yawning Portal- level scaling dungeons?

Morning folks! I am running a game for a group of 10 year olds. They like dungeon crawls (with some story) so I picked up Yawning Portal and would generally start them off at Sunless Citadel but they are level 6 currently and want to keep their characters.

My option is to jump right to "Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan" or up-scale Sunless Citadel. I kind of thought a 101 classic type dungeon might be fun for them and it Sunless Citadel is rated pretty highly.

Any suggestions on how to do that properly? Looking a the adventure they start off fighting a bunch of low level things (obviously), is it as simple as upping the damage and hitpoints for the monsters?

I am somewhat new to 5th edition, ran several games at this point, but not a ton of level/monster design (using published adventures so far) Fairly busy so picked something completed for me already, and really don't want to dump a ton of time into customizing an existing dungeon. All that being said I am open to the idea partially if there is a somewhat simple way to do it I am fine with giving it a shot. Or is it a matter or replacing each rooms worth of monsters for something more challenging?

**Note: They are 6th level but definitely don't play "optimally" and some of the players hardly know their spell list. Its a fun time, but I find encounters for their appropriate level aren't as easy as they should be for a 6th level group with magic items. This is totally within norm for their age range, but worth nothing.

Thoughts/Suggestions/ideas?

Thanks!

Tales from the Yawning Portal EVIL Campaign

So my band wants to get into dnd, knowing that I have had almost 5 years of experience dming. My drummer has played in every campaign I have ran, but the others are pretty new to the experience. I just picked up the book Tales from the Yawning Portal, and feel that these stories would be perfect. Not only does it mean a little less work on the quest delving, but these are classics that I have been dreaming to run for years (mainly Sunless Citadel and Tomb of Horrors) so I am going for it.

The band did ask to play an evil campaign though, which I am totally fine with, even have a larger story arch to connect the modules together. But how should I go about making the modules as something that the evil characters wanna do, considering each one is a stronghold for evil?

Basically I'm looking for a way to slightly change the plot of each one to be so they are after a good guy rather than an evil guy. Give me some thoughts!

(Evil story arch: basically all the characters start at level 1, are revived by an evil God. He is giving them a second chance at life under the condition that they do his bidding, by any means necessary. All but a handful of Gods have been sent to the material plain in mortal meat sacks, for an unknown reason and length of time. The party must take out the non-aligned avatars while they are mortal, in order to throw off the balance of good and evil once the surviving avatars can return to their plane. The avatars killed are gone forever, so the idea is to kill off mostly good ones, but also a few of the bad ones in order for the main evil God to be able to rule more planes/layers of the abyss.)

TLDR: looking for ideas to make the (main) bad guys in TftYP to be good guys without hurting the integrity of the module.

So i'm trying to add a BBEG to Tales of The Yawning Portal from beginning to end. I need help fleshing out the pieces.

Before I begin if you're in my group and recognise my username please stop reading now, or beholder dragons will eat you :D

Quick summary - I'm running the entirety of Tales Of The Yawning Portal and felt obligated to craft a bit of story with a BBEG to tie it together with some other 1 shots in between. My current plans looks like this:

  • Sunless Citadel (1 session in)
  • Side adventure on the way to ->
  • Forge of Fury, downtime leading to ->
  • The Speaker in Dreams (adapted to 5e), on the way to ->
  • Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan, leading to ->
  • White Plume Mountain, leading to ->
  • Dead In Thay, leading to ->
  • Against The Giants, leading to ->
  • Tomb of Horrors, leading to -> ?

I wanted to take the BBEG from The Speaker in Dreams and make him the BBEG for a good deal of the campaign. He's basically an outcast ilithid who wants to achieve godhood and forge a new empire. What I don't know as how he'd go about doing this, other than manipulating the humans above ground.

My made up intro so far is that the adventure started with the players locked up in prison (BBEG had convinced the town they'd commited some heinous crime with his mind magic, but in truth they are innocent). He gave them a deal - retrieve the mcguffin from the Sunless Citadel and he'd make sure the town forgot their crimes.

I'm really struggling with how to tie all the separate adventures together, and coming up with the rest of BBEG story/plot and would welcome suggestions or advice. I'm happy to disperse other adventures in between the Yawning Portal ones - in fact I plan to, so if anyone has suggestions that would be sweet.

  • How would this guy go about achieving godhood?
  • Why would the players care enough to follow him around the realms to stop him?
  • Any logical and natural ways I could place him into the other modules other than having him pop up and go "Ha, it's me again! <Skeletor laugh>"

Thanks Reddit!

In area 7(The Forsaken Prison) of the ToH, it says that the crawl space eventually leads to a one-way magical door, which leads back into the pit side as shown. However, when looking at the map, it would appear that the crawl space instead leads back to an area shortly before area 6(Face of the Great Green Devil). Is this simply a misunderstanding on my part in relation to the map, or is there a mistake in the way the crawl space is mapped? Also, the crawl space is said to have a plug in the ceiling, but neglects to inform where the plug leads. Is this a typo, and should the plug instead be in the floor, granting ingress to area 13(The Chamber of Three Chests)?

Hello, Reddit! I was fortunate enough to do a bit of work for this book, and since I found out recently that the book has been released, I thought I'd share my work with the community!
