Thrilling, audacious, witty and emotional, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake is perhaps still best known for replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, which shattered conventions, turned tradition upside down and took the dance world by storm.
Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s beloved tale is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times.

I saw it last night. It was my first time seeing any large production ballet/dance performance, and it hit me so much harder than I expected.
I have to admit, I never thought I'd be able to "understand" dance, but it was so emotionally evocative. Coldness, longing, anger, inner-turmoil, tenderness, love, despair, all resonated so effortlessly in me, even a hundred feet away in the back of the balcony.
Of course I think it helped that this version is typically interpreted as a queer retelling of the original--I could empathize strongly with the character of the Prince and his journey--but I'm going to try going to more dance performances in the future.
Anyway, it's been on my mind all day and I just wanted to share.

Hi all, I am a complete newbie when it comes to ballet and recently saw the Nutcracker at the Lincoln Center and was totally blown away. I immediately bought tickets to see Swan Lake, which would be my second ballet ever. Spent a pretty penny on nice seats for me and my girlfriend for Valentine’s Day. Unfortunately, just got the email that due to Covid and several dancers getting sick and missing rehearsals, it’s now being changed to Balanchine’s one act version, with option for full refund. I really was looking forward to experiencing the full 4-act ballet and had read the story synopsis and everything. Do you all think it’s worth it to still go, or should I refund my tix and wait to see the real deal maybe next year?
I've never seen it - only read a synopsis. Odette says she will go to Siegfried's ball, but Rothbart is watching, so he has Odile arrive, magically changed to look exactly like Odette. Siegfried and Odile dance the whole night. At the end of the ball he proposes marriage, Odile accepts, and then Rothbart says it was a trick, at which point Siegfried runs to the lake to beg Odette's forgiveness.
Why didn't Odette go to the ball?
(I googled...)
