A list of puns related to "Straightedge"
Iβm 19, Australian, in college. High distinction student.
I donβt drink, Iβve never smoked weed in my life, or taken any other drug (other than Panadol and Prozac). Shit, I donβt even jaywalk.
Iβve had a few opportunities to do some things but I always turn it down. Is it bad if I keep being such a square? I donβt shame anyone else for doing it (literally all my friends and family are potheads) and I have absolutely nothing against it, I just have this sort of reluctance to it.
But should I at least mess around and try it? Acid, shrooms, weed and getting shitfaced drunk doesnβt really appeal to me, but whenever I say Iβve never done stuff like that people seem suprised, and I feel like I may be missing out.
My uncles a massive hippy and has literally asked me to do shrooms with him several times lol.
I was looking for a way to draw straight lines with my fountain pen. I read here that a raised ruler or straightedge works best. Every raised ruler that I could find was made of metal, and I was worried that would likely damage my nib. So, I 3D printed my own:
https://www.prusaprinters.org/prints/86394-raised-straightedge
It's still possible this may damage a nib, so I wouldn't use this with anything expensive. Just thought I would share.
Remember, no trip to Loweβs is complete without buying a Magnum Sharpie.
The More You Know
I've looked at several but even the best one "Geogebra" constructs figures in a way where you can't erase parts of lines, just whole figures. All I need is something like ms paint with the ability to connect points to other points(with snapping), draw circles with compass, and erasing lines just like the erase tool in paint.
You can construct a tangent to a circle by constructing a perpendicular line to the radius on the edge of the circle.
You can do something similar with a parabola using properties of focus and directrix. https://www.reddit.com/r/GeometryIsNeat/comments/8iu8oz/oc_a_parabola_constructed_using_solely_compass/
My question is, can you do the same to curves that are not conics?
Let's say I print off a graph of y = 2^x, can I use a compass and straightedge to draw a tangent line at (1,2)?
What about a tangent line at (2,8) for y= x^3?
Recently came across the heptadecagon construction (video)which was fairly complex. I'm wondering if any artists, mathematicians, or architects have tried to generate something even more complicated/beautiful using only compass and straightedge. I should mention, I'm aware Islamic art work over the ages the employs this technique. I'm looking for something above and beyond that. For example, could you construct an image like this using only compass and straightedge?
I keep writing scenes that involve alcoholic beverages but I don't actually know anything about them or the personality traits popularly associated with them. All I have is beer = neutral manly drink and wine = fancy(ish), could someone who's knowledgeable in this kind of thing give me a cheat sheet of sorts? Also, maybe some pointers for what's appropriate in particular settings (like house parties, wedding receptions, drinking to get drunk, etc)
The extent of my experience is one time I made and drank a shitload of mocktails at Christmas, but I'm not sure how normal it is for people to mix their own drinks at events and stuff.
(And yes, I know that ~anyone can have a preference for anything~ but come on, there are stereotypes associated with scotch and I wanna use those)
Edit for those asking: mainly my fics are based in Australia, but since I'm posting in English to AO3 and I probably don't get many Australian readers I'm fine with using British and American stereotypes (and there probably won't be enough Australians commenting here for me to get as broad a range of opinions as I want anyway)
i was watching a hate5six video the other day and it was one of those goofy (imo) hockeybro straightedge bands. i think they were called magnitude. anyway before one of the songs the singer said βfuck their mind controlβ and i started imagining a band called like MINDPRISON or Energy Torture and they have the same aesthetic as gorilla biscuits except their songs are about directed energy weapons and being a targeted individual. what do you guys think. before a song they could say like βthis ones for all the TIs in the audienceβ or βshoutout to everyone on gangstalking forum dot comβ
In Ancient Greece, mathematicians (such as Euclid) used a compass and a straightedge to perform geometric constructions. How did these tools look like in that time and how do they compare to their modern equivalents?
I'll never hate you or even judge you for doing your thing. I'll keep you from hurting yourself and I'll prevent you from hurting other people but I'll never judge you.
Please give me the same courtesy.
Given 3 collinear points H, I, G where I divides H, G internally. Construct a triangle whose orthocenter, incenter, centroid are H, I, G respectively. Use only straightedge and compass.
edit, assume HI : IG β 3 : 1
edit2, H,I,G are distinct
EDIT:
Got two new mods now, so we're good. Thanks to everyone that offered to help - much appreciated.

Looking for some new mods to take over r/straightedge.
I'm the only active mod here and my involvement will be gradually scaling down between now and mid summer. (Work situation changing - with a good chance I just won't be online as much as I am now).
It's definitely not the busiest of subreddits, but it is super helpful to be on here a lot, so you can quickly deal with stuff. To give you an idea: Looking at last 27 days of the mod log I can see there was 25 times I had to remove/approve things, deploy punitive measures against spammers, etc. Main thing (as I see it, anyway) is to keep things civil, enforce the rules and offer some balance when things spin out of control, which is not often.
Looking for 2-3 new mods, preferably regular users of this subreddit. Questions? - Ask me here or send me a PM.
I just got a promotion with a 17 percent raise.
I don't think I could've gotten it if I were still smoking. In fact, I was passed up for a promotion about 6 months ago and it might be weed related as that was the second worst interview I've ever had. I blamed Zoom and COVID.
I never smoked on the clock (it was one of the ways I convinced myself that I didn't have a problem), but it still affected me cognitively during the day. I got extremely behind during COVID and I want to say it was 40 percent weed's fault (forgetting shit, minor mistakes I had to fix later), 25 percent COVID stress, and 35 percent increased workload. Working myself out of that mess was ROUGH, and a lot of self hate happened during that time, but I am caught up now.
Cross addiction is real. My nicotine consumption rose and my alcohol use did too, but more minor. I vape and started basically spending the same amount of money I did on weed on nicotine π‘. 1 pod a day= pack a day tolerance, which was worse than when I smoked cigarettes. However, due to high blood pressure, I'm now on a new med and it makes me miserable to drink alcohol so that's stopped.
I think I'm gonna wean off with nic gum to address the blood pressure and stop being so ridiculously dependent on nic. So starts my forced straightedge journey.
Happy sober Friday, yall!
5 months, 13 days weed free.
Day 2 for alcohol. Day 1 for nic.
Does anyone else who is straightedge have this problem? I feel like I have NO friends. Literally none of my friends invite me anywhere that alcohol and/or drugs are involved. This has made my social life basically non existent. Do any of you struggle with this?
I came up with this question during a descriptive geometry class. We had to draw an ellipse corresponding to the intersection of a roof (an inclined plane) and a chimney (a cylinder). While finding the ellipse in the three regular views was really easy, drawing the isometric view was difficult, since while any number of points could be found in the isometric view, determining the angle the ellipse should be drawn at seems much harder.
I want to find a general method for finding an ellipse's major and minor axis (or foci, both would be equivalent), given five points lying on a general ellipse.
I already know this can be solved by defining a coordinate system, solving a system of five linear equations to get ellipse equation coefficients, and then finding major and minor axis from coefficient manipulation (I think all the required algebra could be done with compass and straightedge, but it would obviously require a lot of steps). Needless to say, I'm hoping there exits a more elegant construction.
TL;DR: looking for a compass and straightedge construction for finding a general ellipse's major and minor axis (of foci), from five arbitrary points on the ellipse.
Whenever Iβm high around my straightedge friends and have thoughts that I think are genius they laugh as if Iβm just speaking nonsense and it makes me feel poopoo and I feel like they think Iβm stupid but I also feel as if they are missing out or that they donβt understand and yβall are cool af what do yβall think about this phenomenon?
I am a Japanese high school student interested in mathematics. Sorry if my English is bizarre. I've been thinking about straightedge and compass construction recently. And here is the question:
Can you draw a line parallel to the line given using only a straightedge?
I discovered a way to draw a line segment with length of any rational multiple of the line given, using a compass only one time. And I found that the two proposition below is equivalent.
I wondered if the proposition 2 is true when you cannot use a compass. So, I made this post.
I think it is impossible to draw a line parallel to the line given using only straightedge. I would appreciate it if you answered my question with the proof or a link where I can read the proof.
Recently I have adopted two major lifestyle changes: I went vegan a little under a month ago on moral grounds, and I also recently quit drinking alcohol because I started a new medication that doesn't mix well with it. And boy oh boy have these changes made me feel like one hell of an outsider.
This post isn't to meant to condemn alcohol for the same reasons I'd condemn eating animals; I have no moral issue with alcohol. I'm not straightedge either, I smoke quite a bit of marijuana and I used to drink too. I'm only intending to highlight how similarly these products/customs are engrained in our culture and how alienating it can be to give either/both up. One of the moments this hit me the hardest was at the grocery store last week, walking past all the frozen chunks of dead animal bodies and listening to "Drinking Problem" by Midland playing over the speaker.
The default position is to be a meat-eating, alcohol-drinking American adult. Rejecting either makes you "different" and is an anomaly. Parties and gatherings revolve around drinking alcohol and eating (meat, cheese, cake, ice cream). Being vegan and not drinking are both lifestyle choices that will make people criticize you for being "pretentious", "snobby", "stuck up" and assume you want to brag about both all the time. It's hard to talk about these things in public for the above reason (which is why I made this post, to talk about the issue without being told I'm just virtue signalling).
Alcohol and animal products are both so deeply entrenched in our culture, and in similar ways. Both are featured in music, TV, memes, etc and are forced down our throats constantly. Most people don't even see this as odd, it's never questioned. People blindly accept the negative realities of alcohol in the same ways they accept the negative realities of animal agriculture. Both are terrible for your body. Both are blindly promoted in society by corporations and by just average people. I'm the weird one because I don't want to accept unnecessary animal suffering. I'm the weird one because I can't go get drunk or even just have a glass of wine at dinner, and would rather just smoke a bowl anyway (so I'm a criminal too).
Maybe this isn't 100% the right place to post this but I'm just frustrated with how alienating it can be to reject certain parts of society I don't want to partake in.
So I have decided to quit everything alcohol, drugs etc and I knew about straight edge from before but I do not know anything about it/the lifestyle. What does straightedge mean to you personally except living a drug free life. What are you expected to act like?
/r/Oakland mods donβt want to reply to my inquiry about not approving this post, so here it is for /r/AskSF !
Hey folks,
Reached out to practitioners (didnβt mention psilocybin) and heard this:
One:
I am very sorry to hear about your friendβs terrible struggle with treatment-resistant migraines.
To clarify, I am not a medical doctor or a doctor of any kind. I am a licensed talk therapist. I do work with folks who struggle with chronic pain, but from an emotional perspective.
Sometimes unprocessed emotions can manifest themselves physically. The pain is still very real is these cases. Of course I cannot say for sure if this is the case for your friend.
If she is open to and interested in beginning talk therapy to address her chronic migraines, please have her contact me directly after reviewing my pre-screening questions: https://www.saraouimette.com/blog/2019/3/28/pre-screening-questions-to-be-considered-for-services-with-sara-ouimette-lmft
Wishing you both the best,
Two:
There is some evidence that ketamine assisted therapy could help with migraines. If interested, the patient can reach out to our front desk at info@sageintegrativehealth.org to complete an intake.
Warmly,
I did refer my friend to the second practitioner but b/c of how well cluster headaches can be treated, want to have someone who knows psilocybin speak to her.
My friend is very straightedge so donβt want to broach the topic myselfβhas to come from someone with a real degree from an accredited institution.
Thank you!

Several months ago I put out a call for interviews for the xsisterhoodx straight edge interview project. We've had a great response! We've profiled women from all over the world. You can check out all the interviews on www.xsisterhoodx.com . If you would like to participate, or if you know someone who should be featured, please DM me.
If you are interested in contributing to xsisterhoodx, DM me- We started a discord for us writers to discuss topics and get feedback. It's been pretty cool.
I know theyβre not technically straightedge if theyβre not punk, but do any of yβall know rap groups with anti-drug messages? I like old school east coast dad rap (Thanks for introducing them to me dad) like Public Enemy, and I found theyβre anti-drug themes interesting if a little racist (sell drugs the other man, not the brother man π¬)
basic story is that a while ago I was invited by a friend, he had invited one of his friends over too. that person is your typical privileged vegan/straightedge/etc militant.
at some point in the convo, I casually stated that I do weed edibles to help myself feel good. cue discourse from the same person about how drugs are essentially bad and counterrevolutionary.
well, know what is counterrevolutionary? depression. you don't build a revolution with an army of people who don't have any will to live anymore.
I haven't fallen into the depression hellhole again since I started doing weed about once or twice a week. I would rather keep doing this than be miserable and passively suicidal. and on the contrary, I feel more motivated to do things in this state of mind.
I also do psychedelics, but for a different reason. I find their effects fascinating. I quite like the effects of weed edibles too.
anyway.
to those who would claim that I'm developing an addiction here:
yeah well.
I'm generally quite open about the fact I do drugs. not trying to look like a junkie or whatever, but tryi
