Favorite part is when reporter ask ice cube, βwhats a guy from Compton do when he starts making real money like this?β And he replies βbuy Raider gear!!β
I have just watched straight outta Compton and honestly I rate the film a 10/10. I have recently in the last couple of months fell in love with 90s hiphop despite previously only listening to hiphop from my era. I have already now started to listen to some of easy eβs and N.W.A work.
Whatβs your opinion on the film or the group in general?

Straight Outta Compton - In 1987, five young men, using brutally honest rhymes and hardcore beats, put their frustration and anger about life in the most dangerous place in America into the most powerful weapon they had: their music. Taking us back to where it all began, Straight Outta Compton tells the true story of how these cultural rebelsβarmed only with their lyrics, swagger, bravado and raw talentβstood up to the authorities that meant to keep them down and formed the worldβs most dangerous group, N.W.A. And as they spoke the truth that no one had before and exposed life in the hood, their voice ignited a social revolution that is still reverberatingΒ today.
Community Letterboxd Score: 3.7/5
This is a really well made film. It does a great job telling NWA's story and hits some very powerful emotional beats. It does however, seem rushed at points in an effort to include as much information as possible and suffers slightly because of it.
B+
Itβs a disgrace how the movie βStraight Outta Comptonβ completely misportrayed Eazy-E. They showed Eazy as a spaz when he never tripped about anything. They also showed him in tears gazing up at a billboard that showed Dr. Dreβs βThe Chronicβ had sold 5 million copies, when Eazy earned a large percentage of that album. Why would he be crying? Heβs getting paid off it. Not to mention the movie showed him going broke when he was worth 30 million at the time of his death, and once again, made a large percentage off everything Dr. Dre made. These are just small examples. They also made it look like it was Dreβs idea to start a label when it was Eazyβs. Anyone know why they did Eazy so dirty? He was one of the illest and wisest gangsters of all time and they portrayed him like a spazzy, broke moron.
What a horrible decision by the oscars. However, a part of me thinks this could have been avoided if several big films like Blade Runner 2049, Logan and War for the Planet of the Apes were nominated last year.
Anyway might as well apply the award for previous years.
It was the year where we had a ton of sequels to franchises that actually had really great reviews.
Creed was the most unexpected of the films. It was sort of a Rocky remake, but Coogler found a way to make it fresh.
Mad Max Fury Road is maybe the best action film in years.
Star Wars The Force Awakens made the most money.
Straight Outta Compton (first non sequel!) really did become popular that year. A film some thought would get legit oscar acclaim.
It was tough to decide between Mission Impossible Rogue Nation or Ex Machina. I went Ex Machina because I think the Academy would have squeezed a different kind of genre film in there. Both were very good imo
So what would have won Best Popular Film that year and what would have deserved it?
In the 1980's, were the LAPD actually using APCs as battering rams to knock in people's front doors when suspected of being drug houses as shown in the film? When I saw this part of the film, it seemed a bit far-fetched to me. I know that no-knock warrants have been a thing for a while, but to use such excessive force before even announcing their presence seems a bit - as I said - far-fetched.
How realistic is this? Did these types of things actually occur in the anti-drug hysteria of the 1980s?
In case you haven't realized I love rap especially old school rappers. Any film with rap as a basis I will watch.

When the film begins we see Eazy E walking out of his car as the instrumental to the song "talking to my diary" by Dr Dre. Then at the very end of the film, as the credits roll, "talking to my diary" starts up again (this time the full song plays).
In the introduction to the song Dre says "bear with me for a minute while I talk through the pages of my diary" so it could be that the film is Dre's diary as it is informing us of his rise to fame and although there is no one clear narrator who talks us through the film there is writing on screen which names the memebers of NWA and this suggests to the viewer that there is someone telling this story, maybe from a page in their diary?
I know it isn't as strong of a film as say "The Big Short" or "Carol" but what do you think it deserves to get a nomination for?
Personally I think Cinematography and Sound Mixing.
What's the song that's playing when Eazy E walks in the club to meet with Ice Cube and reconnect? CREAM by Wu Tang plays right after but can anybody name the track that plays before it?
