A list of puns related to "Snare drum technique"
So i've been learning traditional grip and was wondering if you're supposed to hold it in your right or left hand, and does that change depending on what your dominant hand is?
I am in my second year now and my instructor has told me I need to play through the drum more. Iβve tried imagining that the drum was lower but I feel like it doesnβt help. Are there any good ways to practice playing through the drum?
I'm a long time drum set player who primarily plays rock and jazz, and I'm hoping to improve my technique by delving into either concert snare drum books or marching snare books. I was thinking either Portraits in Rhythm by Anthony Cirone or the Rudimental Cookbook by Edward Freytag.
At first glance, the material in them doesn't seem to be very different, so I was hoping to get opinions from drummers who have experience in either marching or concert snare. Which style do you think will improve my drum set playing the most, if that is my main goal?
I saw of myself on video and found that I was slouching and pushing my lower jaw forward, basically clenching muscles I don't need to, and wasting energy.
So, I wrote, "Sit up straight," and "relax your jaw." on the batter side of my snare. I also wrote, "RELAX!"
Now, it's the first thing I see when I play. It really helped me, and I hope it helps you too!
Okay, so I have something I would like to discuss. When I first started learning percussion (about 8 years ago) I've always been taught to create a fulcrum on the drumstick with my thumb and middle finger, and often my index finger is fully extended past the stick and below my first knuckle is against the stick but most of the pressure is created with the middle finger.
The teacher I'm currently studying with uses a fulcrum between his index finger. (below the first knuckle where the thumb ends when you put the two next to each other)
Recently while I was practicing I tried out playing with the fulcrum that my teacher creates, and one thing I noticed is that it makes it easier to have a nice rebound, and control my bounces with playing very softly with out being tense. Of course when I first tried it I felt like I was going to drop my sticks, but I figured that was because I was changing up the technique that I've been using for years just like when I first tried out traditional grip a couple months ago.
How do you guys usually hold your drumsticks? What do you see as the pros and cons of the two different approaches?
I'm kind of a noob and I've been listening to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers recently and Chad Smith always does this thing where it's like a ghost note but multiple in a row. He does it a lot in Soul to Squeeze. I was just wondering if that's a special technique or if he just has really good control of using the bounce. If this is a stupid question please tell me I'm an idiot as nicely as possible, thanks.
Like the thing that Wondagurl let's say does, when you have the main snare and then some hits from a different snare. How would you choose one that sounds good to compliment the main one?
Are there any rules or tips about this topic in general?
I use a Ludwig Element Evolution kit and used the basic kit snare that comes with it, the toms sound great with the kit, the classic Ludwig quality, but the snare... it's good enough, but I found over time it was beaten in and became super flimsy in only a few months, the snare wire wasn't locking in anymore, and the drum was going out of tune after about 10 minutes of playing. I just got a 6.5 x 14 Supraphonic today and it literally makes the entire kit sound better, I assume it's much more quality (I mean I paid $600 for a snare drum lol) so it won't have as much issue getting knocked out of tune, or God forbid the snare wire latch getting fucked up again. I really love it and the heavy Weather Master head that comes with it, I can finally play ghost notes!
Have a hard to match kit where the matching snare is $800 and change which Iβm fine with but it begs the question to r/drums
Shit sounds great, cant seem to figur eout what is going on...
