A list of puns related to "Sideboard (cards)"
Apparently everyone and their mum are playing WU control, and I'm not sure what sideboard cards are good against it. Any ideas?
What are you siding in to beat the Food Deck?
I'm playing Affinity versus UR Delver, the one that has Dragon's Rage Channeler and Mruktide Regent. So far my only thought is to constantly have their graveyard empty with Tormods Crypt. But other than that, else would hurt the deck?
Last season, we had grafdiggers cage and arguably rest in peace as essential sideboard hate pieces.
I have been playing a lot of Esper and Jeskai control in Mystical Strixcives, and I have the answer for Auras, for Emergent Ultimatum, and for Arclight Phoenix.
It has some potential against Rakdos Arcanist, and against Lurrus Burn.
For one single white mana, you can prevent your opponents from playing more than one noncreature spell per turn.
[[Deafening Silence]]
Here's the obvious interactions :
Arclight Phoenix - your opponent can't play 3 spells per turn, they can play 1. 1<3, ergo no reanimation. Prowess creatures become much worse. If they faithless looting, they can't brainstorm.
Auras - Played this one this morning. My opponent spent the game playing lots of Kor Spirit Dancers and discarding to hand size. Because now, I can profitably trade removal for creatures with Auras.
Emergent Ultimatum : Search your library for up to three monocolored cards with different names and exile them. An opponent chooses one of those cards. Shuffle that card into your library. Exile Emergent Ultimatum.
I omitted the line of text that is omitted by deafening silence. If your opponent casts Emergent Ultimatum, he shows you three really expensive cards, you choose two of them to get removed from the game, and then his turn ends.
Rakdos Arcanist : One 1/1 from Young Pyromancer per turn. If they cast a spell, the Arcanist can't, and vis-versa. If they thoughtseize you, they can't play looting. All their important non-creature spells, save Village Rites, are sorceries.
Burn : The lumimancer hits less hard when it's capped at 2/3. They can still definitely win by playing their burn at instant speed, but now you can go ahead and spend your two mana counterspells on their 1 mana burn spells, because they won't get to use all their mana, and you'll outdraw them.
As an added bonus, all of the decks I just mentioned are not packing any enchantment hate in their present incarnation - only artifact hate (abrade). This can change most readily for burn, they could add rip apart...but that's still a pretty big tempo loss for them, and if you counter it they're seriously behind on tempo now.
With all the brewing going along it would be great to have a list for common sideboard cards, silver bullets, hate cards, etc to help fill out missing sideboard slots.
Stuff like [[Grafdigger's Cage]], [[Damping Sphere]], [[Rest in Peace]], [[Leyline of Sanctity]], and [[Leyline of the Void]] are multi-format cards we are all familiar with.
But how about cards specific to historic? [[Roiling Vortex]] and [[Confounding Conundrum]] are lesser known but can absolutely wreck certain archetypes.
Is there a list for this available anywhere?
If you maximize the bottom section of the deckbuilding screen:

Clicking on a color filter will then automatically add those cards from your pool/sideboard to your deck
https://i.imgur.com/39B9BuM.jpg

The cards can then be dragged/moved on an individual basis without affecting the rest of the cards
This should make it easier to figure out what color pairs in your sealed pool are stronger than others
This was super frustrating for my players last night, first round players did the normal βHistoric Tournament Matchβ and despite playing two or three games only 7 cards available from sideboard each time.
Second round some matches tried βChallenge Matchβ direct challenge configured for BO3, using their historic decks... same result, 7 card sideboard after game 1.
Round three various matche setups were tried... no full sideboards showed up after game 1.
Anyone else experienced this?
Meaning: can I fetch lessons from outside my main deck? Or is the lesson/learn mechanic redundant (except for the discard/draw)?
Thanks a lot!
Letβs say youβre attending a modern FNM or tourney with the intent to win but thereβs a catch: YOU cannot bring a sideboard. Other players will still bring regular 75 card decks+sideboards but you can only bring a 60 card deck. Obviously, no deck likes this but which deck suffers the least from this challenge? What deck do you bring?
Hi everyone, I just started playing, and did my first quick draft.
I had read some guides on beginners drafting, like picking every mythic rare and cards you want to be added to your collection despite them not being good for your drafted deck, so I did, and put them to the sideboard tab (they appeared in my collection afterwards)...
My question is: How many cards can I add to my collection this way ?
I had only put 4-6 cards in the sideboard when my draft finished, and from what Iβve googled the sideboard usually takes 15 cards.. Did I miss out on picking 10 more cards through putting them to the sideboard instead of the deck ? Or was there nothing more to be earned ? Does the draft end once Iβve filled my drafted deck with 40 cards regardless of the amount of cards in the sideboard ?
Thanks !
Im currently playing Mardu Stoneblade and Ive been having a lot of trouble with titan decks, I am already begining to save up my tix for more thoughtseizes (im only playing 2 ts and 4 IOK).
I have 4 pillages in the sideboard, but I was wondering if there are some other sideboard additions that other players with similar strategies use to beat amulet titan decks.
Any suggestion helps
Hey guys, I built a Mono Black Reanimator Deck, since I dont own nor want to buy Fetch or Dual Lands.
So far it has been very succesful and even more explosive that the BR one. I just wanted to ask for some feedback on the Sideboard, take a look:
https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/4079670#paper
The idea was to replace the common multicolor sideboard cards with black or colorless ones. Hope of Ghirapur instead of Xanthid Swarm etc.
Since I am relatively new to Legacy I havent played all the matchups yet and would like some Feedback on what to board when.
If anyone wants to suggest Pack Rats - please refrain from doing so :D I tested the Rats and sold them immediately, they are very bad imo. I would rather just fight back against graveyard hate than deal with Pack Rats.
Creatures
Spells
Lands
The general idea is to just get rid of the opponents hand and outvalue them. I didn't specifically go for a human tribal deck, it just ended up happening and because of that I was able to add Dire Tactics.
Besides Clever Lumimancer, every card is removal in some way. We have 4.5 ways to disrupt the hand (im counting silencer, dranith magistrate and elite spellbinder as .5 total as the silencer doesnt prevent them from casting, it just disincentives them to do it, magistrate only hits cards out of hand mainly ultimatum decks, and spellbinder is more of a tax, although it does have added benefits of not allowing someone to fortell a card, so must pay full cost plus 2, and combos with the previously mentioned magistrate).
The mana curve is low, averaging about 1.9, allowing us to run only 20 lands. After a lot of testing, I settled on 3 copies of the castle, as since we only need 2 lands for almost all cards, having it enter tapped isnt a big deal as long as we end up with 2 other untapped lands, and even if its in our opening hand only 2 of the cards are 1 drops, and only 1 of those is black.
Our only way of permanent removal is Dire Tactics, and only targets creatures, so we have no power against a non creature on the board, but every hand removal spell we have hits non creatures, so that should be safe.
This deck was made mainly as a way to go against the constant Ugin ramp or ultimatum decks I see, as these decks are based on non creature spells, and as previously stated our entire deck hits that hard.
The worst matchup ive had is RDW, as they are able to outspeed me and dodge a good amount of hand hate as they run very few non creatures (namely Embercleave).
Castle Lochtwain is essential to the deck as it is our only way to refill the hand, and with a curve of 1.9, the hand will empty very fast.
Ive only been playing best of 1, as I feel like this is more of a casual deck, but I want to try to get it into FNM as my store is opening for events now. Any help would be appreciated, main deck or sideboard.
The rulings on companions don't clarify this, so I ask: could a companion be in my side and not be a companion? Could they just function as any other side board card? Could I, if I wanted to, run [companion] in my side to improve my aggro matchup?
If yes, could I run [[yorion, sky nomad]] as my companion, and then in games 2 and 3 cut 20 cards from my deck and no longer use yorion as my companion while keeping yorion in my sideboard?

Jund Food is a deck I consistently turn to while grinding Arena ladder and I have never been let down. Cauldron Familiar, Witchβs Oven, Trail of Crumbs make up one of the most effective, flexible and resilient engines found in Historic. Paired with absolutely pushed black interaction, there is always a configuration to give you the tools needed to get ahead.

Letβs quickly go over what separates this approach from "stock" versions.
Push & Thoughtseize over Claim the Firstborn
Claim is excellent against aggro decks, Auras and Deadguy-syle midrange. While those decks are common in historic currently there are just too many control and engine decks going over the top for it to be an appealing choice. Dropping Claim and Woe strider from stock lists gives us more versatile interaction main deck, simultaneously opening space in the board where Thoughtseize would be otherwise.
Necromentia
Despite several recent bans lessening the demand, Necromentia remains an important piece of protection. Ultimatums, Ulamog and Niv-Mizzet lead a pack of high power, immediate impact cards seeing regular play on historic ladder. Exercise judgement when looking to this card however. It should only be turned to as an answer for things you can not deal with otherwise.
Languish & Ritual of Soot
Jund oven should always have access to wrath effects. Being low on creatures we can now run the best ones to suit our needs. Both cover most threats when we want to have all 4 while some matches only call for 2 which is where the split is useful. Besides the obvious application against Gruul, Collected Company and tribes, languish can be a solid two for one option against many midrange decks. Soot is our best card against GW Angels and some versions of Boggles. Look for situations where these can catch an opponent by surprise.
Sideboarding
It should go without saying but here it is anyway... no sideboard guide should be followed strictly every game. This is a guide not a cheat sheet but you knew that already so let's get to it.
UR PHOENIX
-4 thoughtseize -1 devil

As in-store play ban is about to be lifted me and my friend are preparing for modern in our lgs to come back. My friend is playign bogles while I'm gonna be playing my mono red Incinerator burn list and whenever I'm gonna be playign he will most likely be playing to and with area of the shop being very small the player restriction might be so low I may be forced to play him every night. I realise it's nearly an unwinnable matchup but I don't have the money to invest into a different deck and I want to at least put up a game against him.
I'm considering 2 sideboard cards against him. One is [[engineered explosives]] which I know is a great way to get rid of his bogle and gets around totem armor auras since it destroys them too. It also has the added benefit on hating on Death's Shadow decks which I expect to see too. Howevewr it also kills my goblin guides and swiftspears and I can only play it on 1 meaning if he gets auramancer or dryad arbor and makes them huge I have no game against them + it doesn't do anything about the possible leyline of sancticity so after popping ee I might end up being a sitting duck.
Another sideboard option I found it very niche card I've never seen played [[aura barbs]]. It has the benefit or possibly killing big bogle and maybe will help me kill other buffed creatures too. It also hits like a truck to his face regardless of whether he has leyline or not. It also doesn't hurt me apart from y eidolons. The issues are that I don't knwo if this plan is viable at all due to being very specific niche card. It also doesn't get around totem armor auras and well it's 3 mana spell so I might be ded by the time I can cast it with only 19 lands in the deck. Not to mention being limited to this matchup unlike the EE.
What do you guys think? I'm not very expierienced modern player so I'd appreciate any and all advice on this.
EDIT: Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm glad this thread spawned this much discussion. Right now apart from my suggested cards I'm considering mostly Leyline of punishment and roiling vortex but I'm grateful for all the suggestions.
Hello fellow dredgers. With the release of MH2 I want to get into modern with a bug dredgevine deck I have been piecing together/ dreaming of playing because fetch prices are cheaper so it's time. I've mainly been playing turbo dredge in legacy because it doesn't need fetches but it's time to jump into modern. So, my question is what are some must have cards I'd need for my board? Or should I just meta game the board until I figure out the decks of people ill be playing against? Thanks in advance.
I'm struggling to figure out what sideboard cards to run against Tibalt's Trickery combo, and the only one that I can think of is [[Trinisphere]] to stop the cascade, as [[Grafdigger's Cage]] doesn't work against the deck, since cascade exiles. Any thoughts?
Iβm playing Merfolk a lot and I notice I run into problems with what mainboards to replace for sideboards, like others Iβm sure. What should I take out of my main board and fill in with my sideboard against each type of deck. I want to become a pro with Merfolk because I love it so much but I am horrible at SB-ing
For example: Obviously graffdiggers cage or Tormods crypt for reanimater, but what would I take out to replace them with? That is where I struggle the most.
Lets say every sideboard could have 30 cards instead of 15, what deck would stand to gain the most? Would the normal mainstay decks like Jund og Control just be that much better, or would transformative decks like Infect going into Bogles be more viable? What would the meta look like?
Is there a petition or plans to reverse the sideboard changes? It is a pain in the ass to not be able to just add another copy of a card, but rather need to search it again and add it from the collection. I mean, come on. Nobody can tell me, they like the new(ish) sideboard or that its more practical than before. I liked the old sideboard, I don't want any changes or new features. I just want the old one back...
Or do any of you actually have a point why the new one is better than the old one?
If you have an Even cost card in the sideboard of the Obosh deck, can you declare him as your companion? And if you bring in that even CMC card, you can no longer declare him as the companion right?
Painter's Servant (visually at least) changes the colors of cards in your sideboard on MTGO. Is this a bug in the program or how the rules actually work?
EDIT: It's just a bug then. Thanks everyone!

Decklist: https://aetherhub.com/Deck/historic-5-color-control-niv
Deck Overview: So, this deck is a 5-color control deck that uses Niv-Mizzet Reborn to gain card advantage. Since the cards primarily in the deck are dual color combination when we play Niv-Mizzet we usually get to add 4+ cards to our hand as well as casting a 6/6 flyer to the board. The deck in the early game just wants to remove all your opponentβs creatures which is why there is something like 25+ removal spells in the deck just so that we donβt lose to aggro. Just keep 1 for 1 your opponents and then when you drop Niv-Mizzet you regain all the card advantage and refill your hand. Even if they discard Niv-Mizzet there are cards like Kolaghanβs Command to get it back from the graveyard. Against control decks we have Thought Distortion and a few counter spells in the side board to fight them but Thought Distortion is ugly against them as it is uncounterable. This deck is not cheap at all but it is very fun and got me to Diamond tier 3 so far so not bad of a deck as well now that Jeskai Turns is gone.
Key Cards:
Niv-Mizzet Reborn: Well, it is a 5-color control Niv-Mizzet deck so well of course this will be important card. This card is important for a few reasons one is that well he is a 6/6 flyer for 5 mana so he can end the game real quick and once we drop him, we want to try and close the game out fast since we got a lot of cards off him. The 2nd reason why he is important is because of the card advantage he gives us when we cast him. So prior and even after him we are doing a lot of 1 for 1βs against the opponent so dropping him and pretty much drawing usually 4+ cards help us in that card advantage aspect and refilling our hand back.
Removal Spells: So, since this deck is a control deck the de
