Celebrating Ravel~

Today marks the 145th birthday of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), so let's take the opportunity to remember his life, and discuss his works. I'll leave a short biography below, as well as share some of my favorite works by him, while inviting you to share yours as well.

Biographical Outline

1875-1889

  • Born in Ciboure, France on March 7th, 1875
  • Taught music by his father (an engineer, but a music lover nonetheless), as well as local pianists and teachers

1889-1903

  • Entered the Paris Conservatory in 1903
  • It was during this period that Ravel would meet his teacher, Gabriel Fauré, who was a great ally mentor to him during throughout his time at the conservatory
  • Also during this time was his brief friendship with Debussy, before they fell on bad terms in the early 1900s
  • After a couple expulsions from and readmittances to the conservatory (mainly conservatory politics), Ravel left for good in 1903
  • Notable pieces from this period include his Pavane for a Dead Princess and his Shéhérazade Overture

1903-1914

  • Ravel's career as a composer had taken off by this period, and he was known througout France
  • Among his most important keyboard works, two were written during this period: Miroirs in 1904-1905 and Gaspard de la Nuit in 1908
  • Ravel, even today known as a master orchestrator, spent much of this period of time transcribing his piano works for orchestra
  • Ravel reached a high note with the premier of his ballet "Ma mère l'Oye", which was widely performed, from Paris, to London, and even New York.

1914-1918

  • This was a very hard period for Ravel.
  • He spent the first year of WW1 attempting to enlist in the air force, but was rejected due to age (39) and health problems.
  • Enlisted in army in 1915 as a truck driver
  • Experienced many health issues during this time, including insomnia, depression, dysentery, and frostbite.
  • His mother died in 1917, greatly excacerbating his mental anguish at the time
  • His only major composition during this time was his suite Le Tombeau de Couperin, completed in 1917; each movmement is dedicated to a friend that had died fighting in the war.

1918-1921

  • His compositional output fell consider

Maurice Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé, Suite 2: Danse Générale

Hi everyone! For my first ever project, I'm hosting a piece from the ballet Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel: Danse Générale! This is the scene that concludes both the ballet and the second suite. It's a raucous, capricious piece that has some wonderful orchestration that includes the full orchestra. This is a fun one, and I think you guys will really go wild with this!

Note: Accidentals DON'T carry over between dotted barlines in 5/4 bars.

IMPORTANT: Danse Générale starts at rehearsal mark 193. The parts reflect this but it's worth mentioning.

DIFFICULTY WARNING: This piece is very difficult, especially for the woodwinds. Please take some time to look over your part and practice it thoroughly before submitting your final recording.

Additionally, the recording for the click track that I chose is from the ballet, not the suite, so there will be choir in the click track. There is no choir in the suite, and there are no choir parts in the drive.

Below is the sheet music for this piece. Make sure you grab the right part!

Danse Generale Sheet Music

The final date to submit your recordings is July 10th!*

Send your final recordings here!

*Please include your reddit user name, or what you want to be credited as, and instrument in the file name. Thank you!

Erskine Ravel - A character study

So, this will be exceptionally controversial, but I'm beginning to like Ravel again (a bit).

Throughout the series he is referred to as the "Man with Golden Eyes", as he convinces Bliss to stand with him against Guild's policies, influencing Davina Marr to destroy the original sanctuary, tasking Tesseract with taking out Marr and orchestrating his election to Grand Mage.

I'm re-reading the series again, therefore enjoying the luxury of reading all of Ravel's interactions with everyone before the big reveal. Valkyrie and Eloise describe him perfectly; charming, suave, and a Hollywood star. We first meet him in Mortal Coil, with Corrival Deuce. Within the book sets him up as a man who follows, understands, and believes in Corrival's teachings that mages must work from the shadows (Dead Men reference heh). A teaching most mages hold. However, I believe we catch our first glimpse of his true nature when he talks about Corrivals' teachings about leaving mortals alone, and Skulduggery agrees. Ravel replies with a laugh and "I suppose you're right". Mmmmmm. By the end of the book, Corrival was murdered amidst the Remnant Outbreak, and Ravel is made Grand Mage, nominating Ghastly and Madame Mist as his Elders.

Moving on to Kingdom of the Wicked, we find out he was the one who let Sean out of interrogation, telling him that the whole city of Roarhaven is backing him up. Madame Mist disagrees with this but Ravel tells her that this was the better option of the two and the easiest (alluding to the plan with the Warlocks). He says easiest. I have to wonder whether this is due to the nature of attempting to trick the warlocks, or whether it means he no longer is required to murder the people he cares about.

Skip ahead to the Last Stand of Dead Men. There is a war between the sanctuaries. Ravel has rejoined the reformed Dead Men. Here, we see Madame Mist 'take over' Roarhaven in Ghastlys and Ravels' absence. Ravel and Saracen are attacked by two assassins we later learn were employed by Ravel. We later learn this was orchestrated by Ravel to avoid suspicion. Not too long after, we find Ghastly on his back and Ravel's knife buried in it. It was at this moment almost everyone began to hate him.

However, I'm more cautious now. Throughout the series, since the Children of the Spiders' introduction, we have seen how the general community has treated them. I believe Ravel is the best reflection of the attitude towards the Children of the Spider.

Where to start listening to ravel?

So from exploring this subreddit I discover this guy is really popular, and with that many people recommending his works he must be really good(not being sarcastic). I barely listen to anything newer than Schubert or Beethoven so I guess this is a good place to start for romantic and newer artists. What pieces, works or opuses of his do you recommend I start with?

Is sean going to become a vessel for the ravel?

Hear me out on this but we all know how he is working with N'daigoshii right and how he is working with the ravel? They also say he has a ton of power even the zodiac admit to that (before arachne got her spine taken out) So I think that they will make him work along side the ravel personally Because his abilities are most likely on par with a true chimera on the fact that he can kill the chimera spirits and zodiacs. Could ralablast and this so called avatar worked together thousands maybe millions of years ago? Or were they a separate party in all to fight the witches, Chimera, zodiac, and ravel? But at the same time I think that the ravel are going to do the same ritual type that happened in season 1 with ralablast and take his abilities to then be able to permanently kill chimeras. It seems very plausible. Or the army is going to do that and force him to join C.R.A.V.E.N. because it seems that was his brother who was with the Hyena chimera . But that's just a while other thing I wanna figure out before the new chapter. Same with chimeras living alongside humans which will most likely end in bloodshed and less humans/more nukes.

Saturday morning woes at Qitana Ravel

First time posting with screenshots rather than just text.

This morning I thought I would quickly jump into some roulettes, not having done any of them the previous evening (I play on Chaos even though I'm in NA) because of work. I managed to get Alliance, Normal, and Trials done. By 8:30 AM I had only one roulette left I could do before daily reset. I chose Leveling roulette.

Queue'd in, got Qitana Ravel, which was nice. At level 76 sync'd, I had all the parts of my kit I'm used to having. I'm in the dungeon with a GNB, a DRG, and a RDM.

The pulls before the first boss, Lozatl, were mostly fine. The DRG in particular seemed to be confused as to where to stand when the two mini-bosses prior started casting that one move that makes AoE's take up most of the floor except behind certain pieces of cover. No one died, though, so that's something.

After the first mini-boss died is when I started seeing something a bit concerning: our GNB seems indecisive. At times I'd run past them a bit, expecting the standard wall-to-wall pull until the second mini-boss, but when I saw them plant after pulling one group of mobs, I headed back and began AoE-ing, casting Aspected Benefic and Celestial Intersection as needed. Single pull tanks frustrate me as much as the next person, but that's not the issue... or the biggest one, anyway. Nope.

The group hoses down 3 of the 4 mobs at that elevated platform, but I'm rearing my head when the tank begins pulling the next pack while one of those cube mobs is still at 80% health. Okay, so much for committing to a pull.

Long story short before the first boss, tank doesn't cycle mitigations. They use mitigation, but inconsistently, and only when their health begins to dip below 50%, because why not, right? Gotta preserve your life in a crisis. I try to balance using Gravity and my healing spells and abilities to keep the tank alive, which isn't hard because this wasn't a wall-to-wall pull anyway, thanks to that single pull at the start. No one had died at this point, and while our group performance could definitely be better, I've been through worse.

It's not until the Lozatl fight that the tank begins causing me some headaches.

Tank? Those are vuln stacks. They're bad. They make my job harder.

I had to res the RDM prior to this screenshot, owing to them standing in the bad half of the arena.
