Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights are just really fun movies

i don't see these movies brought up a lot here, but I love them both. they struck gold with the pairing of Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, with both bringing a lot of fun into these silly comedies. Noon is a great affectionate parody of westerns, while still taking itself seriously enough for us to care about these characters. and then Knights is just more fun antics lampooning Victorian London, plus it has young Aaron Taylor Johnson as rambunctious scamp Charlie Chaplin.

what are some of your favorite lines or bits from these? i always love the "uno mas" scene from Noon, or Jack the Ripper getting casually kicked off a bridge in Knights

Shanghai Noon (2001) and Shanghai Knights (2003) were much better than I thought they would be

I had never seen these before (and actually remember not wanting to see them when they came out) but found them at a garage sale last weekend and decided to give them a shot. I absolutely loved both of them. They didn't reinvent the wheel, but Wilson and Chan were genuinely funny and the jokes all landed pretty well even 20 years later. The set pieces were great and with few exceptions, the supporting cast all really added to the fun. I also liked the constant reveals of historical people being around them the whole time.

I could definitely see these being comfort movies for some people. Made me miss these types of films.

What are your thoughts on these movies?

Does anyone know how or where to get Cantonese versions of some popular Jackie Chan movies? (Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon, etc.)

We've been wanting to get my grandma some Cantonese versions of our favorite movies for christmas, but can never seem to get any luck. I'm looking for Cantonese dub or Cantonese version of movies like Rush hour or Shanghai noon, those things. Anyone have any clue how I can get these?

SHANGHAI NOON

A few weeks ago I saw a post about movies that make you think of Red Dead. I came across this on Amazon prime and am astonished I've never seen it before as it's over 20 years old. Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are in a western! At least a dozen times I was like omg this is straight Red Dead! Anyone looking for a great comedy western that makes you feel like you're watching Red Dead I recommend Shanghai Noon!

A Western Each Year - 2000: "Shanghai Noon" starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. In 1881, an Imperial Chinese Guard and a laid back Western Outlaw team up to save a kidnapped Princess. An enjoyable Action-Buddy-Comedy-Western that lovingly homages other Westerns. A Critical and Box Office success.

Nwabudike_J_Morgan, le Quatrieme - #37: Shanghai Noon (2000)

Shanghai Noon (2000)

Date started: 5/2/2021

Date watched: October 8, 2021

Princess Pei Pei (Lucy Liu) is not interested in an arranged marriage in the Forbidden City. Her English tutor offers to help her escape, which turns into a kidnapping. Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) pleads to go along with the Imperial Guards and deliver 100,000 gold coins to Carson City, Nevada for the ransom. But Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) attempts to rob the train carrying Wang and the other guards. Yes, yes, it is one of those crazy mixed up comedy plots with lots of dramatic reversals. It is also a Western. And also a Jackie Chan action movie.

Hollywood loved Jackie Chan in the 2000's. And he is a lovable guy. But so many movies! I don't know if I even know 1/4 of them.

The film almost collapses under the complicated plot and the excess of villains and side characters. But that is okay, there is enough comedy, and enough karate chop action, to keep things moving. It is a movie for distracted audiences that weren't really paying attention anyway... back in 2000, when SMS was just starting to ruin everything.

It was pretty much what I remember from the first time I saw it. And I'm pretty sure I only saw it the one time, in the theater. There is nothing completely jaw dropping about the stunts, nothing on the caliber of Supercop (1992), which would have been way too risky for Hollywood. I should put that on my Watch List. That and The Legend of Drunken Master (1994). Ah, see, this is the danger of re-watching things.

There is also a sequel, Shanghai Knights (2003), which I know nothing about. The dynamic between Chan and Wilson is certainly good enough here to suggest a sequel. A third sequel has also been in development since 2003, but that seems increasingly unlikely.

Rating: 7 / 10

[Shanghai Noon] Some questions.

spoilers

So, at the end of the movie, the Imperial Guards decide that in war the general's order's cannot always be followed by the soldier as a sort of loophole to allow the princess to stay in America. Are we to just assume that the 3 Imperial guards reported back to the Forbidden City, "Welp, sorry. We were at war and the princess decided to stay. Better call off the wedding."?

Holy mother of fuck Shanghai Noon is an amazing movie to watch while tripping.

I don't even fucking know why lol. That movie was the most ridiculous shit, I swear.

Owen Wilson's fucking nose. His FUCKING nose holy FUCK lol.

"Wow"

Like he's a very handsome dude, but on a few grams of mushrooms I was starting to see small mountain goats and lil Sherpas ascending the fucking thing. (Not really but fuck)

It was beautiful.

"Wow"

I have NO fucking clue what happened really. Owen was a bad guy. But he wasn't a BAD GUY? Jackie Chan kicked a bunch of people in the face. It was great. Lucy Liu was also in it I think, but at that point my gf and I were still hysterically laughing at that fucking nose.

"Wow"

It might have been an intentional or unintentional ripoff of shanghai noon. All I remember of the movie is that the American character after saving the day with his Asian partner became sheriff or Mayor, and announced that he will be renaming the town to China Town. I was really young when I saw it but I knew it wasn't Shanghai Noon
