A list of puns related to "Samba (software)"
Hi all, I have two xen VMs connected to my TrueNAS machine using it as storage: one uses it as the database/data drive via NFS for Nextcloud, the other is a plex server with all the media connected via SAMBA. I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to handle these VMs while doing a TrueNAS update. I'm not even sure if I have to suspend the VMs during an update, but assuming I do, I was hoping to set up some sort of cron job on one or both systems that would suspend the VMs, run the TrueNAS update, then start the VMs when it's back up.
Has anyone done this? I feel like I can't be alone here, the only thing I don't have that many enterprise folks do is a second xen host to which the VMs could migrate, but that wouldn't really help if the NAS goes down anyway.
I thought people might find my most recent blog post interesting where I create a complete Active Directory infrastructure (including roaming user profiles, home directories and group policy) using only open source software.

I know samba tv only counts a fraction of tv viewership, but its interesting nonetheless
Hbo max has been a smaller service than disney plus, and it especially was at the time some of these numbers were coming out. Late 2020, early 2021

I want to share folders between Ubuntu server and Windows 10.
Context:
I am a penetration tester and I am trying to learn more deeply about SMB. I use the tool crackmapexec
to enumerate SMB, and I recently came across something weird when trying the following commands:
- crackmapexec smb IP
This sets the Domain name
, User name
, and Host name
to NULL
- crackmapexec smb IP -u '' -p ''
This sets the Domain name
, but sets the User name
, and Host name
to NULL
- crackmapexec smb IP -u 'anything' -p ''
This sets the Domain name
, User name
, and Host name
This made me wonder, why does SAMBA treat any username as an anonymous login?
Question:
I've been looking through the SAMBA documentation (which is horrible someone please change this), to find what allows/disallows NULL and anonymous authentication. However, I have been unable to find what settings allow these.
I have a huge folder of >1000 files. On any computer accessing the share, a few filenames are mangled (e.g. 2BQQOF~I.JPG). I know that this is done because the filename contains characters which won't be suitable for most clients, such as Windows.
What I want to know is how to figure out which file this is. Basically, I want to be able to ask Samba "What is the original filename of the file that you mangled to appear as 2BQQOF~I.JPG?"
I do NOT want to disable mangling, which is mostly what I get when I try searching for this on Google. I want to know which file it is so that I can rename it from the Linux side to a valid name.
Simply searching for filenames with non-ASCII characters will NOT work since many filenames have foreign characters and some have emojis in their filenames (both of which are valid in UTF-8-based file systems!). I've already checked the common set of invalid characters and none of them appear to be in any of the filenames.
