A closer look at the Hand of God shows the pulsar near the centre. A pulsar is a highly magnetized rotating neutron star. This one is spins about 7 times a second and has a diameter of only 19 km. The magnetic field is thought to be 15 trillion times stronger than Earth's magnetic field.

Speed of the rotating magnetic field in an induction motor

Hello, all you beautiful engineers and students out there. Recently, i've been given an exercise, where I need to calculate the speed (rpm) of the produced rotating magnetic field with one, two and three pairs of windings in the stator, at the AC frequency of 50 Hz.

I'm not sure how I should calculate this. Do I just do ([frequency]Γ·[winding pairs])Γ—60?

As always, any help is appreciated. Have a good day, everyone!

EDIT:why does this have an award, 5 upvotes and still no answer? Reddit, you illude me. Please help....

What is the magnitude of induced emf of a coil rotating in a magnetic field?

The plane of a coil is positioned at right angles to a magnetic field of flux density B. The coil has N turns, each of area A. The coil is rotated through 180 degrees in time t.

I can't figure out how to attach a photo, so I'll try my best to describe the image!

It shows the B field pointing to the left, and the coil's normal in the same direction as the B field. It is rotating in a clockwise direction in 180 degrees.

What is the magnitude of induced emf?

A. BA / t

B. 2BA / t

C. BAN / t

D. 2BAN / t (correct answer)

I've used Faraday's law, with emf = -N x (BA cos0) / T, which gives me C. I also tried drawing the graphs of flux and emf, but the emf graph in the rotation of 180 degrees is the positive section of a sin graph, so I concluded that the magnitude is simply BAN / t. Where does the 2 come from??

According to the theory Earth's magnetic poles flip about every 450,000 years known as " Geomagnetic reversal", if Earth's magnetic field is due to rotating molten iron in our core, does it mean the magma starts to rotate immediately in opposite direction at that time?

What could be the reason if gradual that leads to this phenomenon.

Edit 1 : Thanks guys, for edifying me on this topic, I am grateful for the knowledge you people shared with me and reddit world.

Edit 2 : Sorry to ask it here but after concluding from every detailed comment, I still am confused about, how could there be many different flows of molten iron inside Earth, do they reside in different layers and counter each other to maintain a current balance.

Edit 3 : Many comments mentioned magnetic lines tangles due to Earth's rotation, to realign these lines polar reversal happen, does by magnetic lines the comments meant molecular orientation of Ferro magnetic materials inside core, cause by spinning continuously they may loose their order and become random in orientation, and hence as magnetic poles like a definitive direction of north - south it would realign itself, which could cause the flip.

But why does the magnetic orientation always choose the current north-south or vice versa direction why doesn't it align in current east-west or any other direction making it new north - south.

And what could cause disorientation of molecules, could for analogy we can compare it with battery as it discharge.

Somewhere I read that magnetic poles are gradually changing positions and are now much far away from geographical poles then before and still moving. How is this gradually moving, does re-alignment follows a definitive path.

Correct me if I am wrong.
