The remake of Resident Evil 2 was one of the biggest success stories of last year. So, it made perfect sense when word that a remake of Resident Evil 3 was on the way. I mean, they already spent the money on the engine, of course they were going to bring the only game of the original trilogy to not get a remake forward.

But before that one comes out, I wanted to see how the original held up. I did this last year with 2 and rediscovered how much I really loved that game. And I had a lot of nostalgia for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis as well so, I went in with high hopes.

Turns out, I still really like Resident Evil 3 as well. It isn't quite as good as 2 but it is still Capcom at its best.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is a bit more action oriented than either the original RE or 2, stuffing more zombies and other creatures to fight on screen than before. That isn't to say that Resident Evil 3 tosses its survival horror roots in the trash though, they are still there just a bit more restrained. Don't worry though, there are still multi-step puzzles that will require you to insert items in to statues to reveal other items that will unlock new areas.

One of the things I was dreading as I came back to this game though was the Nemesis himself. I remember him being annoying but finding it tolerable at the time but playing the remake of 2 though had me worried. You see, Mr. X in the remake of 2 is very much like Nemesis in the original Resident Evil 3. He can show up and stalk you through the game and he does it for most of the game. Of course, you can "kill" him and get a brief respite but he always returns.

Fortunately I didn't find Nemesis as annoying in Resident Evil 3 as I did Mr. X in the remake of 2. I am very worried for the handling of Nemesis in 3 though.

Most of Resident Evil 3 is pretty standard Capcom survival horror from this era. But they did include a cool new mechanic where the game would present you with a binary choice, like the image above. These choices would then effect how the game would progress, often opening up new and different areas from each other.  It's a fun addition to the pretty linear formula of Resident Evil and allows for multiple playthroughs and different experiences from
