Some specs for the system in question:
- Compressors are 2x York RS64-22A compressors. Each has six cylinders (201CFM displacement per compressor) and each is direct-driven via 75hp electric motor.
- It is a liquid overfeed system with no heat exchangers or secondary working fluid; it flashes liquid from the condenser through a HEV to force saturated liquid R22 directly to the evaporator at a rate of about 875 pounds per 90 seconds.
- The system is charged with about 7000 pounds of R22. It was designed and installed in 1972, when R22 was obviously much more plentiful.
Recently, I have been working on some automated modeling/performance tracking for this system along with several others. I noticed that when a compressor is no longer needed (LEAD/LAG configuration), power to the motor literally just gets cut off there and then with no unloading.
When this happens, the suction pressures jump up and nearly peg the gauge (similar effect to a water hammer, I suppose). Similarly, when the compressor starts, it starts fully loaded, sometimes causing VFD faults during starts on warmer days.
The capacity control on the compressors is manual, so its not really feasible to have someone sitting around loading and unloading them several times a day, but what sort of effect does this have on the equipment?
