Breaking down our season so far:
Minus the slow start (1st 8 games), we are +34 since then over 45 games or so, with a expected win % of .594 and 125 more runs scored than allowed. That is a 96-win pace.
Over the past 16 games, we are +4 runs, so a much more pedestrian .529 win % which wouldn't get us to the playoffs. 85 win pace.
Over the entire season, we are at -6.
Which team are we? It seems that we have won A LOT of close games but then blown out by those same teams. See the Red Sox and Blue Jays series for examples: 2-1 with the BoSox but outscored 11-8. 2-2 series with the Jays but outscored 23-19. Also, 1-2 vs the Astros but outscored 21-11.
As a statistical guy, I could say that "a win is a win" but reversion to the mean always happens, and it turns out we are winning a lot of close ball games and losing a lot of blowouts. Sure, we would have 32-33 wins if it weren't for a subpar bullpen but still, I am waiting for some at least marginally dominating performances soon.
We also have a worse win % for over .500 teams at 12-15 than one would expect, given our record. We are over-performing against sub 500 teams at 20-7. I remember reading that the best team should beat the worst possible team (replacement level) around 68% of the time on a neutral field.
Thoughts? Will we pick up steam and become a more legit team as the season goes on? Or is this a hot but somewhat unsustainable start? 538 still has us as only the 12th best team in the league. If Manaea regains his old consistency, Jesus gets healthy and pitches the way he can, and Cole continues to step up, then we might have a chance, especially if Chapman can get to his .800 OPS numbers and other guys continue to hit. We have a hole at SS but hey, Elvis may be turning the corner there, going 6 for his last 12.
Otherwise, I think the playoffs (and another WC loss) may be close to the ceiling for this team.

For those who are unaware of what Pythagorean Expectation is, here’s a brief summary from Wikipedia: “Pythagorean expectation is a sports analytics formula devised by Bill James to estimate the percentage of games a baseball team "should" have won based on the number of runs they scored and allowed. Comparing a team's actual and Pythagorean winning percentage can be used to make predictions and evaluate which teams are over-performing and under-performing. The name comes from the formula's resemblance to the Pythagorean theorem.” American sports executive Daryl Morey was the first to adapt James' Pythagorean expectation to professional basketball while a researcher at STATS, Inc.. He found that using 13.91 for the exponents provided an acceptable model for predicting won-lost percentages.”
So, according to the formula if we take the total number of points that the hornets have scored so far this season (445) and multiply it to the 13.91 power, and divide that by the total number of points scored (445) to the 13.91 power plus the number of points allowed (433) to the first power; we can estimate the total win percentage for the rest of the season, assuming we keep up this pace, will be 59%. So we take the full 72 game slate and multiply it by 0.59 to calculate the hornets total number of wins at the end of the season, and our answer is 42.48, rounded down, gives the hornets a final record of 42-30. Keep in mind very small sample size, but I just did this for fun lol
So last year, I’ve taken a look at the Pythagorian Expectation for each team. Which was a fun way to figure out how each team performed according to it’s potential. The formula itself factors in Points Scored, Points Allowed and Wins in a simple and beautiful way. If you want to read more about it, you can do so here.
The conclusions last year were that Oakland was the luckiest team, winning 3 more games than they should have, and Jacksonville their karmic counterpart. Of course it’s hard to make any kind of prediction about the future from these numbers. So naturally, we did.
The most underperforming teams (close to .500) are likely to rebound a bit the next year, barring any major shifts like a new QB a new HC or a total crisis in the locker room. The most overperforming team, will drop back to the pack.
And it looks like for a number of teams, that’s actually what happened. The Cardinals went to 8-8 this year, the Jaguars won 7 more games. Of course only part of that is the regression to the mean, the other part is the excellent draft class and free agency. The Raiders and to an extent the Giants did drop off a bit, their luck having run out in 2017.
But that’s looking back at last year’s formula. The 2017 season is in the books. Who were the starcrossed teams of last season, and which had snuck clovers under their emblems?After inputting the Points Scored, Points Allowed and the Wins, this is the result for the 2017 season:
And we have a returning character: The Browns. Which stands to reason, because it’s highly unlikely a team would score so little and get scored on so much that it statistically shouldn’t have won a single game. In fact, statistically, they should have won 3.3. Which is a -slightly- bigger difference than the Jacksonville Jaguars of last year boasted.
Next on the list are Jaguars, Buccaneers and Texans. The surprising one here, is the Jacksonville Jaguars. They have won 10 games last year, but according to the formula, they “should” have won 12. Mostly because of their very low Points Allowed. Only the Vikings allowed fewer. Again, two returning teams. That’s three out of the top four.
