Why did Lord Snowdon (Antony Armstrong-Jones) receive his earldom in 1961, instead of in 1960 at the time of his marriage to Princess Margaret?
I'm trying to find another example of someone marrying in the royal family and receiving a peerage later on instead of at the time of marriage.
Princes born to the royal family have received new peerages on their wedding days (Duke of York, Earl of Wessex, Duke of Cambridge, Duke of Sussex).
Prince Philip received his title Duke of Edinburgh (among others) on his wedding day, Nov 20 1947.
Mark Philips - I've read that he was offered an earldom and refused, presumably around the time of marriage to Princess Anne, although I can't find a source for that.
Angus Ogilvy - married Princess Alexandra of Kent and also is said to have refused an earldom.
So did Armstrong-Jones originally decline a peerage and then change his mind? In the episode "Matrimonium" of The Crown, he's shown before his marriage speculating that they'll give him an earldom to make him acceptable. It's driving me a little crazy that I can't seem to find out why he wasn't made an Earl until almost a year after the marriage! Thanks!
