As you are well aware, an effective Recon team will play behind enemy lines, either disrupt enemy movement, or plant Garrisons to facilitate hard flanks on objectives. I think we need to expand the Platoon to a 3-man unit, where a "Pathfinder" will be the 3rd role.
A Pathfinder will be given the task of finding tenable locations for supply drops to occur (and when Airborne ops become a thing, dropping in soldiers).
I'm probably gonna receive a lot of flak for suggesting this, but the restriction for supply drops to be dropped behind enemy lines should be when a Pathfinder has "surveyed" an area in his vicinity that is tenable for a drop. The restrictions for finding a drop-zone should be a 20x20 meter-square free of foliage taller than the player, rivers, and enemies in the area, while being at max 50 meters away from the Pathfinder.
If restrictions for air supply drops behind enemy lines are too harsh by limiting it only to Pathfinders finding LZs, they should make the deviation of supply drops landing on your mark greater the further back you place it from the front.
This will also shift the Recon mentality from being a force that harasses or impedes enemy movement, to one that asserts longevity above all else. Having a third person in the Recon team would also benefit their survival chances by having an extra gun in the fight.
Curious to know what y'all think about this potential implementation. Probably not the greatest idea out there, but would definitely like to hear your comments about it.
So this should be a fun idea!
Hobgoblins are generally a militaristic race and tend to organize into groups. Lets mutually design one of those groups! Basically, anyone who wants to should make a single Hobgoblin character. As stated, it's a small military platoon.
Feel free to create a squad leader, a totally green soldier, a veteran, the bumbling flatfoot that no one is sure how he hasn't been kicked out yet, the conniving second-in-command that's always looking for a chance alone with the commander for "advancement", the surprisingly badass camp cook that everyone is too afraid of to ever steals snacks from... Heck, tie your stories in with one another!
If you aren't into designing characters, then spitball ideas for themes, uniforms, platoon name, the society they're from, etc.
Basic rules are thus:
That's basically it! Military theme is obviously a plus but it's not like they all have to be Fighters or anything. Also remember that Hobbo society doesn't much care about gender, so Hobbroads are just as likely to fill the military ranks as Hobbros.
Also, this isn't a min/max contest, so don't sweat the numbers (though by all means, if that's your inclination then feel free). Just have fun! Preferably include some personality/backstory, too, but that's also optional. I'm not really planning to do anything with these, but I thought it would be fun, and who knows, maybe you'll end up as a miniboss squad in someone else's campaign? :D

Throughout history, long pole-weapons paired with large shields have probably been the most common combination of armaments. Greek Hoplites used them in Antiquity. Norman Levies used them in the Middle Ages. Zulu Impi used them in the 19th century!

Yet, in Pathfinder, combining a reach weapon, even a simple longspear, with a shield, even a simple wooden tower or heavy shield, is close to impossible for most trained combatants, let alone the average militiaman.
If we assume that a normal military formation in Pathfinder is a unit of 30 humans, mostly under the age of 35, called up by an Aristocrat in a time of war as part of their feudal obligations, required to pay for their own weapons, then we realise the problem of this.
Most of them will, presumably, be commoners, with a small number of Warriors, Adepts, and Experts. Let's say 2 Warriors, 2 Experts, 1 Adept, and 25 commoners. Most of them will be level 3 or 4. Maybe one of the Warriors is a trained member of a Militia, leading the platoon, and he's level 5. If we assume the remaining Warrior, the Adept, one Expert, and 18 commoners are level 4, that leaves us with 7 level 3 commoners, and one level 3 Expert.
That means 3 feats for most of the NPCs, with only one of them having four feats.
So, what is needed to allow the use of a longspear and (heavy or tower) shield in combat?
shield Proficiency (for the non-warriors)
Tower Shield Proficiency (for the non-warriors who want to use tower shields)*
Sheild Focus
Shield Mastery
Shield Brace
*literally nobody will actually have this, though...
That's MORE FEAT SLOTS THAN MOST OF THESE CHARACTERS HAVE. No Skill Focus for the Experts, no metamagic feats or the like for the Adept... these people would have had to dedicate EVERYTHING in their training to the possibility of military service, and they STILL wouldn't be able to use history's most popular weapon configuration.
Now, hold on, because it gets WORSE.
Using the standard arrays given here: https://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/npc-classes/non-player-characters/
All Warriors will be treated as Basic Melee characters, the Experts will have the basic skill array, the Adept will have the Divine Array, and the commoners will be a mixtur
