Why Sony didn't make a consumer Optical Disc Archive version?

This is a video from Sony talking about the technology: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqiJG3y0f4c

Will there ever be a consumer version of Optical Disc Archives or LTO tapes, it is perfect for family memories like weddings photo and videos.

Optical Disc File Archive Advice

For the organized data hoarders out there, I need some advise.

I have a very disorganized stack of random discs (CD, DVD) with files that I honestly have no clue what is on the disk anymore, nor do I have all the time at the moment to go thru them but I know they are getting old so I want to back them up while they can still be read. Does anyone have a recommendation on how to approach this archive effort?

Overall these should all be data discs with a random but no practical file/folder organization at this point, but I would like to have something that allows me to run the archiving of these discs in a logical method that I can hopefully make searchable or something at a later point.

To me it would not make logical since for these discs to make this set of disc ISO files and these are not video/music DVD/CD so standard methods for those would not apply either.

What is the communities advise for this problem?

Re-use of former boot drives from other computers is a good way to back up family photos, or archive more serious content, since buying burnable optical discs costs valuable money that can go toward more serious resources.

My reason for wishing to re-use old hard drives from other computers outside of their original computer is because I want to take advantage of ample gigabytes of space if I have gigabytes of content I want to make a second copy of.

Sometimes, a computer hard drive can contain content that can be too important to not make a copy of in the event of a disk crash. Hard disks as individual items can costs many dollars of money when bought as an individual item, and this is why I like the idea of removing hard drives from their original computer if their original computer isn't worth reviving.

I think of gigabytes of data in an all-encompassing stance. Text documents, application software launch files, images, audio, video, encrypted files, etc.

While we have compressed data formats to reduce the disk space for an otherwise identical file that takes up more space, there's also encryption algorithms that use more disk space than the space of the original files, so sometimes you wanna encrypt other content and need more space to allow for an encrypted file that uses more megabytes than their non-encrypted counterparts.

Sony Optical Disc Archive?

I’ve been searching the web for a couple days trying to find some user accounts and reviews of Sony ODA for a content library of approx. 25tb and growing about 500gb/week on avg. I’ve got all my storage solutions settled (cloud, ssd working drives, hdd for primary, secondary and tertiary backups) and now am working to get cold storage. LTO is out due to environmental constraints, and I’m not wanting to migrate tapes every few years.

The other solution I was looking into is just BDXL TL M Disc, but that will take forever and multiples will be stacks and stacks. I’m fairly sold on optical media for long term (50+ yrs) storage. Sony ODA came up, but very limited information. (Sony ODA: https://pro.sony/en_HR/products/optical-disc)

Accessing Data On Optical Discs -- In Android

For most of us, optical discs are a technology of the past; replaced by streaming services, NAS Servers, and portable hard drives/SSD's. However, there are still a bunch of us who rely on optical media as a form of infinitely scalable cold data storage.

One of the trickiest tasks that few people appear to be interested in, is reading the contents of tripple-layer (100GB) and quad-layer (128GB) blu-ray discs (known as BDXL) on a television or on a cheap media consumption device such as a tablet. Sure, you could hook up a fully fledged HTPC computer but that gets noisy and expensive. Most modern gaming consoles and blu-ray players (even the newest most premium ones) tend to not support burned discs over 50GB.

The way around this is to purchase an Android box with USB OTG support. I highly recommend the NVidia Shield TV Pro for this purpose. Just note that when plugging in an external optical disc drive, if the drive is only powered by USB, you may need to use a Y-cable or get creative to meet the power requirements. Using a Y-cable with the Shield and a Pioneer BDR-XS07 Everything works without issue.

You will need to download the application 'MLUSB Mounter' and purchase the 'UDF/ISO' extension plug-in (only costs like $2.50) and you're good to go. I also use this method with my 'Samsung Galaxy Tab S6' and 'Samsung Galaxy Tab Active Pro' tablets. You can copy files off discs onto the built-in storage or read directly off the disc in your device's default app for opening those files.

Still not reading Wii U discs after optical drive replacement

Bought a second hand Wii U, got it home, stuck Mario Bros U in and I got in invalid dirty disc error, cleaned the disk, same error, opened the console up and cleaned the lens, same error. Put Captain Toad in and this time it showed up on the menu as if it was working, but then crashed to the same invalid disc error once opened

It plays Wii discs fine without a hitch but wont read Wii U discs, so I was thinking it's gotta be an issue with the laser right?

Well I just replaced the entire drive (don't worry I swapped the logic board) and after booting up it still refuses to read Wii U discs, did a full factory reset as a last effort, same thing.

I'm about at the end of my tether with this thing, at this point i'm thinking it's a faulty mobo but i don't have the skills to diagnose that let alone fix it, has anyone else had a console with this same error thats not been fixed by a new drive but been able to get it working again?

I'm not willing to accept that I bought a brick just yet so i'm down to try absolutely anything before I just give up and order a new console off Ebay, any help is greatly appreciated

Archiving all my optical media and need advice about disc images

Well, I’m a first time poster, long time Reddit lurker on my alt account! I’m posting because I need the advice of this community.

I am currently in the process of organizing my wife’s and my digital life. I do some basic archiving & backups and I am 95% paperless at this time. I am aware that I’m no where near where I should be in terms of hardware and my β€œsystem” - I am very limited by my budget and my personal time, due to 3 jobs and raising kids. But at least I have something.

With that said, below are my questions for your advice. I am wanting to start archiving all my optical media (movies, software, old data discs, etc). However, I’m trying to figure out the best way to do that (I am Mac based).

  1. For unencrypted discs, I’d like to keep the menus, special features, etc. I’m planning on using Disk Utility to create disk images. Should I use DMG or CDR? Or some other format?
  2. For encrypted discs, I’d also like to keep menus, etc. What is the β€œbest” free software/app to create a disk image of encrypted discs? If there is no free software, what is the β€œbest” paid one?
  3. Is there any sort of GUI software/app to organize & play/mount movie disc images?

I've included some background info in the comments. Thank you all for your time and help!

Found a bunch of 14 years old optical discs and decided to read them

Some time ago I found a bunch of optical discs with backups I burned in 2006-2008. Out of curiosity I've decided to read them to get some intuition how well data was preserved. Note that this is not a scientific study, it's a purely anecdotal dataβ€”still, I found it interesting.

The discs were lying in a cardboard box unopened for, I guess, at least five years and three moves. No sleeves, no other kind of protection; just the box itself, with discs being at the bottom of the box and lots of other stuff covering them. Some clearly visible scratches and other type of dust, which I took care of by wiping with a dry piece of cloth. I took my USB LiteOn DVD reader and run dvdisaster over all the discs. While this tool has some special raw reading mode for CDs, it was nothing more than a repeated dd for DVDs, so I don't think it mattered much. All discs were full or almost full.

First impressionβ€”these things are so slow. I haven't been using optical media for a long time now and while I expected that, well, this is a pretty outdated technology after all, it was still slower than what I remembered. The results:

  • Platinum 8x DVD+R: everything ok in the first pass,
  • TDK 16x DVD+R: everything ok in the first pass,
  • TDK 16x DVD+R: first pass: ~95% of data recovered, outer tracks look damaged; after few days of repeated reads, everything recovered,
  • Msonic 52x CD-R: everything ok in the first pass,
  • Fujifilm 16x DVD+R: everything ok in the first pass,
  • Esperanza 56x CD-R: everything ok in the first pass,
  • Emtec 16x DVD-R: everything ok in the first pass,
  • TDK 16x DVD+R: everything ok in the first pass.

In the end, everything turned out fine except for this one disc that was a bit of a problem. I recall that I was buying the cheapest available brands at the time, yet the results were much better than I expected.

Again, this is purely anecdotal evidence, though I guess it does inspire a bit of confidence in optical media. For "small" amounts of data it's quite viable long-term storage without even going into the archival-grade media.
