A list of puns related to "New Testament apocrypha"
Hi all,
Newbie commenting here. I have a couple of questions.
2.How worthwhile is reading the apocrypha?
I want to expand my knowledge of primary sources in Christianity. Thus is their any more books anyone would suggest?
Is it worth reading the Quran and Book of Mormon etc to gain more insight on Jesus?
Thanks all
I was reading this https://orthodoxwiki.org/Apocrypha and it was interesting to not that they had a New Testament Apocrypha section. What I wanted to know was what books were considered part of that? I am assuming it was Shepherd of Hermas, Barnabas, 1 & 2 Clement, and The Didache. What are the other ones?
I noticed recently that Adam and Eve are never mentioned in the Old Testament outside of the Genesis accounts. (Adam gets a couple mentions in a couple of genealogies, but Adam is "man" so there's that.) They do show up in the Apocrypha, and then again of course in the New Testament (though only briefly the gospels themselves). Apparently, something happened in those intervening centuries that made the Adam and Eve stories important for Jewish and early Christian thought.
I've seen plenty of works that tackle the texts' use of Adam and Eve regarding the fall, or regarding women in ministry, or regarding marriage and sexuality. But I'm interested if there are works out there (surely there are!) that study how Adam and Eve were treated in general. Sometimes I feel like each author is just prooftexting Genesis 1-3, shoving Eve into some foregone conclusion. But I imagine there is a richer theological world behind those later texts' appropriate of the Genesis stories, and I'm curious about it.
What is the best translation for apocryphal Old Testament literature, in particular 1 & 2 Enoch and the Ascension of Isaiah?
Obviously Wisdom of Solomon and Enoch 1 are quite well liked by Gnostics, but are there other OT texts that seekers should take a look at?

Hello everyone! On behalf of Eric, I'm making this post to tell you all about the first public Apocrypha Spirit, Spreading Rot Renews the Earth! Here's a message directly from Eric explaining what this means. Have fun checking it out!
>Oh, hey - it's March 29th! Here's a link to the files for Spreading Rot Renews the Earth, an Apocrypha Spirit I made live (over Zoom, because pandemic) with a con audience, about a month ago: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/11ZmuGK_eaLosSEOY_a_ApnSentc4mH5t?usp=sharing

>For more info on Apocrypha Spirits in general, see https://querki.net/u/darker/spirit-island-faq/#!what-are-apocrypha - the most relevant bit is probably "do not expect the level of balance, polish, or coherence you'd get from a published Spirit". I do have a lot of practice making Spirits, so it's probably closer to balanced / working than a fan-made Spirit with equivalently small amounts of testing, but it's still quite rough.

>There are no plans to develop it further... so don't [message] me with reports or anything - though if folks play it I'll certainly enjoy casually hearing about it and what bits appealed and/or worked!
I can't find any satisfactory historical research about the christian holy scriptures, thus the next clue I am looking for is whether the Catholic Church did ever have the total monopoly of the press. In such case I guess the New Testament should be considered as pure propaganda. It would not be the first time in history that history itself has been rewritten, that a God has been invented (e.g. France 17th century, Japan before ww2). Could the Vatican State have operated a cultural revolution similarly to the Chinese ones?
Cafeteria-style religion, everybody.
EDIT: The relevant verses Christians making this claim ignore:
> Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:17-19)
Thank you guys for pointing this out!
EDIT 2: Made it to r/all. Hello everyone!
EDIT 3: Wow, my first award! Thank you, kind stranger!
EDIT 4: Second silver award! Thank you lots!
Also, surprising to see how many Christians aren't aware that some tout this "Jesus fixing" argument. I can assure you I'm not misrepresenting or straw-manning. I'm simply expression a common answer we tend to hear in response to Old Testament laws.
SPOILERS
There are tons of religions, urban legends and myths in Supernatural. Supernaturals Christian inspired God (Chuck) is revealed to be actually selfish and unwise. Together with the multiple dimensions and God having a sister, it feels like they borrowed a lot from gnostic apocrypha. Like the Apocryphon of John or the Secret book of John from the Nag Hammadi library. In this text there is an entitie born named Yaltabaoth from superior Gods, which is described as malevolent and arrogant. And he describes himself falsely as the sole and jealous God. And after creating the first human Adam he realised Adam is actually superior to him, doesn't like that and tries to destroy him in the end. And in this book, the Garden of Eden is actually a false paradise and eating from the tree of knowledge sets the humans free. #teamfreewill
It is not exactly the same, but I can't ignore the similarity in some parts of the story. (This is a grossly simplistic and incomplete telling of this very complex book, there is a great YouTube video by dr. Justin Sledge on his channel ESOTERICA on the book)
I was curious if other people are seeing these similarities as well? It might be a bit of a niche subject, but this keeps nagging on me.

When people talk about greatness, people often overlook durability and reliability with regards to health. We all know how well LeBron takes care of his body, but with all the recent talk about how injured everyone is, itβs crazy to think that LeBron has made his way to the finals 9 times without any serious injury. It seems as though that level of wear and tear would destroy even physically gifted human beings. His recent groin strain is arguably the worst injury heβs ever had in his NBA career.
Has he ever sat out of a playoffs game due to injury?
What is the exact portrait or different portraits of the afterlife in the New Testament (between death and the future resurrection of the dead)? How does it differ from the Old Testament's portrait?
A little bit of backstory here: my wife (35, F) and I (46, M) have been married for years (20), we have 2 kids (I don't remember their age) and we never had problems in our relationship, she also never seemed to have interest in games in general
So last week i got home earlier from work, and i didn't say anything to my wife. because i wanted to surprise her. When I got home the house was silent, i asked for my wife but nobody heard me. I started to look for her and then i saw it: She was playing +R online on my PC, i was happy because she never seemed to like games, but as I got closer i noticed something terrible, something absolutely atrocious: She was a Testament (Dunno his age, probably 25 or somethin, M) player.
I screamed in fear and anger, how could my beloved wife play such a piece of shit character? She tried to explain herself but i was having none of it. Disgusted by the thought of being in the same house as a Testament player, i ran the fastest i could to a safe place, then i called my lawyer (36, based Eddie main male) and one week later i was free from that filthy Testament player
So r/GuiltyGear, am i the asshole?
Itβs not your responsibility to keep someone in check because they are famous. Not in the slightest. Of course if someone is committing actual crimes, like Orange Juice murdering his family or a leech holding public seat, those are exceptions. But the public shouldnβt be trying to pressure Brad Pitt to change his lifestyle just because he is an awful human being. We donβt own people because we consume their media.
Like why would you go three doors down to your neighborβs house who you donβt know and bang on their door and gather a crowd because they made a statement that they donβt support some cause you do support?
The God described in the New Testament grants the prayers of the faithful. There is no God who grants the prayers of the faithful at a rate greater than not praying. Therefore this God does not exist.
possible anticipated arguments?
The verses that seem to promise that God will grant the prayers of faithful Christians actually mean something quite different.
The problem with this argument is that you have to distort the meaning of ordinary words so far that you've trashed the Bible. If words mean the opposite of what they say, then the Bible might mean that Jesus was a pleasant fellow who died a natural death.
God does grant prayers.
The problem with this argument is that all the evidence indicates that he does so at the same rate as non-prayers, the same rate as random chance, a rate that measures as zero effect of the prayer.
ETA I have been asked to provide the verses that make this claim, and the evidence that it is not true.
The largest study, from the 2006 STEP project, found no significant differences in patients recovering from heart surgery whether the patients were prayed for or not. The patients who knew they were receiving prayers did experience slightly higher recovery complications, possibly due to chance and to the added anxiety or pressure caused by expectations from the prayers.

medical outcomes after hospitalization in a coronary care unit. Mayo Clin Proc. 2001;76:1192-1198
Neither masked prayer nor MIT therapy significantly improved clinical outcome after elective catheterisation or percutaneous coronary intervention.
Intercessory prayer itself had no effect on complication-free recovery from CABG, but certainty of receiving intercessory prayer was associated with a higher incidence of complications.
There is no scientifically discernable effect for IP as assessed in controlled studies.
Matthew 21:22 "And all things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive."
John 14:13-14 "Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the
... keep reading on reddit β‘Anyone who claims that the Bible does not explicitly condone slavery clearly hasn't read the New Testament very closely.
In the very short Book of Philemon, the apostle Paul is penning a letter to the owner of a runaway slave. He is writing on behalf of the slave, yes, and urging the slave owner to do the right thing....
However, the apostle Paul is still instructing this runaway slave to return to his owner despite the fact that in that time and culture, runaway slaves could be punished by immediate execution.
The apostle Paul and the early church cared more about the fact that slavery was the "law of the land" than they did about protecting this man's life.
The Bible condones slavery, full stop.
Fuck the Bible.
So I'm nearly done reading all of Old Testament and I've really enjoyed reading it so far and I'm really looking forward to reading New Testament because I keep hearing that there are going to be crazy crazy things happening in it, so my question is:
Do you consider New Testament to be vastly superior to Old Testament in terms of writing, character development, interactions between characters, the overall plot and story, the themes of the story, the intrigue of the story, the fights scenes and action and so on.....and if you do, do personally feel like there some things that were perhaps handled better by the author in Old Testament or is everything just better in New Testament?
