A list of puns related to "New Naturalist"
Harriet be like: Don't kill any animal, but please hunt down that big aggressive Grizzly-bear for me. Don't kill any of those beautiful 3 other Grizzly-bear creatures that want to see you dead and eat your head. I need a sample, so use your slow-ass varmint rifle where you need about 4 magazines to get it down. Oh, and could you please take a photo of it while it's running straight in your face, trying to kill you?
LIKE WTF I DIED LIKE 20 TIMES FOR 900 NATURALIST XP
I'm assuming I get XP from studying animals and giving Harriet legendary animal samples, but where do I find legendary animals? Is there a guaranteed way to find them or do I just need to be lucky and hope that someone else hasn't killed them yet?
I havenโt played for a long time. Since a little after naturalist role came out. Outside of the new bounty hunter liscence, what new and exciting or same old same old. Worth it to come back? Anything on the horizon coming?
[Beware] this is a rant
The naturalist DLC was long awaited by many (well, new content, not exactly the naturalist role), myself included. But boy oh boy was it a disappointment... And before you hit me with a "but the world was ending!!" I just want to say, it's not an issue about the amount of content, it's an issue about how the content is.
The DLC brought new clothes, legendary animals, and a "new" gameplay loop. The latter is the one I have the most problems with.
There is nothing new, refreshing, or even fun, into having to load with "sedative" bullets animals in order to take samples. It's literally the same input required between the trader role and the naturalist role.
The only interaction you have in RDO with the world is through a gun. You shoot shit until nothing moves anymore.
Worst part? They took the time and effort to add a new camera (with a magnificent tag price but whatever) AND they added the compodium which is updated... when you take a picture of an animal WITH NO EXTRA REWARDS for doing so.
How hard would it have been to have an Harriet not so blood thirsty and instead have an Harriet fond of beautiful pictures of legendary animals with stupid filters. Could have called her collection "Harrietogram" for all I care.
The only "new" content in this update was the outlaw pass... Which was mostly made of discounts.
First off, this advice is for helping Harriet and selling samples. I donโt think much advice is needed on how to kill and skin an animal.
Getting a sample as well as taking a picture of an animal counts as studying it. No need to spend time trying to be able to study it when you can just take a sample.
The only thing you need to worry about if youโre trying to make money is getting samples. Tracking, studying, killing, skinning, and photographing are all just additional things that as far as I can tell are just for completionists.
Selling a sample โstampsโ an animal in the collection the animal is in. Stamping is how you complete full sets of animals. No need to have every sample on you at the same time; selling a sample stamps the animal until you trade in the set. Once you have all animals in a set stamped youโll get a notification, then you should open your field guide and be able to turn in the full collection.
If you kill an animal and get locked out of Harrietโs shop, just WAIT. No need to make another angry reddit post about it. If you want to sell samples, just keep sedating animals and taking samples while you wait. Itโs not like you canโt sell them to Harriet as soon as you can access her shop again.
If you get attacked by wolves and donโt want to kill them to avoid being locked out of the shop, run in a wide serpentine pattern (to avoid letting the wolves get directly behind you; if they attack from behind itโs an instakill) towards the nearest tall thing to climb up get away from them. If you have your sedative rounds on you, sedating one wolf will sometimes scare the others away. If this doesnโt work, sedate another or just let them eat you, itโs really not that inconvenient.
You canโt skin an animal youโve sedated. The game neglected to tell me this until after I killed a sedated badger and felt really bad about it. In addition, photographs taken of sedated animals donโt count, so donโt waste your camera space.
Thereโs really not much point in reviving sedated animals other than a tiny amount of role XP and an honor gain.
UPDATE: as u/-RiparianPetrichor- pointed out, you can register an animal as photographed even if your camera is full. Youโll get a notification saying your camera roll is full, but it apparently still counts. So for anyone who cares about photographing wildlife, you can go ham without worrying about having to go through and slowly delete your pictures.
Thatโs pretty much all the useful stu
