What was the expected lifespan of cast metal cannon such as naval long guns, and how did they age, so to speak?

I'm wondering primarily about barrel wear and how it would affect a given cannon's use, as well as how a gun was deemed no longer fit for military use and what happened to it after that.

How to do very long distance naval travel

I'm currently running a colonization/refugee campaign where ive started the players in familiar territory and now they will be travelling to the new world

My main issue is this boat journey is a long one, up to 6 months if the weather is unfavourable, while this could be handwaved and simply say "after x weeks you stop off on a small island to restock provisions" and do a little encounter or skill challenge I don't want the time to pass so limply

Has anybody got any fun ideas to spice it up a little, at the minute I have:

β€’Downtime ability checks and using the stuff from Xanathars to create issues in those pursuits β€’Sea combat β€’Bad weather β€’Island restocking β€’Discovery of new islands

In addition to this I think my main issue would be if I am running encounters I wouldnt want the players to be at full resources for all of them, I'm considering spreading long rests to every week and short rests only if they explicitly ask, so if combat does occur then they can't just burn everything because they know it's the only thing that day? I know I could just make each combat deadly but thats less fun than wearing down a tired crew I think?

Can't fire my guns. Any guns. Emden Naval

Can't fire any of my guns. I fired one volley, and it did the new follow volley thing, and then I can't fire. My AI guns do fire however. Anyone know a fix? Gonna update to see if it works when I die and respawn

Update: Joined new game, fired once, can't fire anymore. How did they fuck it up this time my god

Update again: J'ed out, respawned, same thing. Is this just German vessels?

Update 3: Tried with American vessels as well, same bug. Will try to turn off follow cam and see if that helps

Last update: Turning off shell cam, should, fix the bug. If it doesn't, not sure how to fix it. Thanks to u/Trickstick for the fix
