Nathan Fielder is one of my favorite comedians, but I must be missing something?

I don't know how exactly to describe their styles. They're basically all performance artists that blend real-life with their fictional characters, often as an outlet for social satire and commentary. Sometimes it's just for silly pranks and humor though.
Who was the first to do this? It's an inherently very difficult thing to master because they all basically let real-life help write the plot and only have a general outline of the story they want to tell. Cohen and Fielder have both talked about how ludicrously inefficient it is because they end up with countless hours of footage that have to be widdled down into something coherent and funny.
Nathan Fielder should be on Conan's podcast. John Wilson was just on it and they're working together, I believe. He also made Conan laugh like hell in all of his appearances on the show. Would be cool, maybe.
