THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW:
His father was reluctant for him to start playing baseball professionally.
He drove a taxi buggy.
He had seven older siblings.
His family is French-Canadian.
The Indians were named the Cleveland Naps after him from 1903 to 1914.
His big rival was Ty Cobb.
WHY I LOVE HIM:
My grandparents weren't even born yet when he was playing, but it's impossible not to acknowledge him when talking about our team's history.Β One of our best players of all time.Β When I did Kenny Lofton's week, one of the users on the sub said our Mount Rushmore is Feller, Lajoie, Lofton and Thome.Β I agree!Β I also love the backstory of how his parents didn't want him playing baseball but he did anyway and went on to become one of the greats.
The following is a post I did in the Boston forum that I follow. I guess it would me appropriate in this one though, but read it like you are not a Cleveland fan since this will likely be more familiar territory for you. I don't have a lot of Karma so I guess my posts don't get many views, so maybe it will reach a few eyes here and hopefully you enjoy it. Even though I hate Cleveland for 2016, I kind of gotta like them since the team was named after a relative for some time and he is a top three player for them of all time and a coach. As long as he didn't play for the Yankees it is okay to like your team.
"I was at a family reunion last weekend and got into a conversation about our relative, my 4X great uncle, Nap Lajoie. Then again on the Wally post in the r/redsox someone commented about Cleveland and the grief the name Indians causes. So as many people have never heard of him I will let you know some interesting facts.
The Indians were called the Naps(Napoleons) after him for about 10 years until he left for Canada.
He was the third guy to 3,000 hits after Wagner.
The 1910 season saw him and Cobb battle for baseball supremacy and to this day there is no distinct winner of the batting crown. They both won the award and there is no consensus on what their final averages were. There were multiple books written about the battle between the two of them that year and was when Nap was coming back to earth and Cobb was taking off. Two greats passing the same point in different directions. Cobb was ahead of Nap .383 to .376 and took the last two games off, while Nap went 8-8 during a double header and won .384 to .383.... This has been questioned for years though and some have shown a number of record keeping errors. They also think that the players liked Nap so much and hated Cobb so much that he might have been "given" the hits.
He hit .426 in 1901 with the Athletics and it still stands as the highest average ever in the AL and also the first person to hit over .400 in the AL. He also is #19 in highest lifetime BA. In his 1901 season he dominated in every offensive category and took the Triple Crown.
As per OPS+ he has 3 of the top 100 greatest seasons of all time.
He was voted in the second class to be voted into the HOF and got more votes than Tris Speaker and Cy Young who were voted in the same year. He was a very quiet guy that wasn't concerned with numbers as much as winning and that apparently endeared him to
... keep reading on reddit β‘ELIAS has him at 3,252.
MLB.com, Baseball Reference, ESPN (run by STATS LLC, I think) have him at 3,242.
I bring this up because Jeter has either passed him with 3,243 hits or is still behind him by a few.
I was curious to see who was the best player born on each day of the year. It turned out to be a bit more of a struggle than I thought it was going to be, so I decided to simply sort it by WAR. Does that mean that sometimes a better player got left off the list for a player who simply had a longer career? Absolutely. But WAR is a nice simple stat. So, here's the list!
January
February
March
April
In 1903, the Cleveland Bronchos rebranded themselves, naming the team after Nap Lajoie, who at the time was the best active player on the team, and also the best player in Cleveland history. So what if every team was required to do that today? Below you will see how each team renames themselves based on the best player in their history, or their best active player. For the best player in history, I took the player with the most bWAR specifically for that team, meaning if a player had more total WAR, but accumulated some with a different team, they were not included. For best active player, I went by 2021 bWAR, taking into account only how each player performed over the last season:
AL East
New York Babes/New York Aarons
Boston Teds/Boston Xanders
Toronto Daves/Toronto Marcuses
Baltimore Cals/Baltimore Cedrics
Tampa Bay Evans/Tampa Bay Brandons

Stay tuned for part 2, the 60 team simulation to determine the ultimate team name!
I made all time teams for all 30 squads, and put them into seeds to make a βMarch madnessβ style bracket.
Rules:
Round one last 48 hours, rounds 2-finish will be 24 hours
Each player can only be used once. This made it extremely tough to pick teams for guys who were great on multiple teams
I will comment the matchups, upvote the team you think would win
Each team has a DH, as it makes the matchups easier to evaluate
All teams are on 3 man rotations
The matchups are based on the seeds I made, Iβll say what my rankings are after the bracket is done

... keep reading on reddit β‘I was curious if we used modern stats how many players would have won a triple crown. For batting I chose OBP, SLG and RE24 (the best equivalent to RBI) for pitching I chose ERA+, bWAR (best equivalent to wins), and Ks (still a pretty important stat and I needed a counting one to prevent low IP guys). Scroll to the bottom to see why I chose those categories in slightly more depth. This is in no way meant to be perfect or to say these are that these are necessarily the best seasons of all time but it would be a cool way of honoring players going forward.
Annotations:
Asterisk - Probably on steroids. Clemens 1997 season is up for debate but im pretty sure he used. Bonds 1992 and 1993 seasons could be debated but I dont think theres enough evidence to say he did.
Italicized - Won Cy Young
Bold - Won MVP (NA before 1911 and from 1914-1922
WAR- Led league in fWAR and bWAR for either position players or pitchers.
(+ indicates that they lead their league in both bWAR and fWAR for both pitchers and position players)
(++ indicates that they lead the MLB in bWAR and fWAR for both pitchers and position players)
Complete - Won both the traditional triple crown and the sabermetric triple crown
Total- Led MLB in all sabermetric crown categories not just league
Perfect- satisfies the requirements for WAR, Total, and Complete
Immaculate - Fulfills requirements of perfect+ led the MLB in all three traditional categories + lead MLB in bWAR and fWAR

First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!
Choose from all MLB and NgL players from any era.
Should have a 1-9 including DH (DH can be any player, not just DHβs), 5 starters and at least 4 relievers. Outfield spots are interchangeable.
My roster:
SP: Walter Johnson, Satchel Paige, Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax, Christy Mathewson
RP: Mariano Rivera, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Trevor Hoffman
Bench: Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, Oscar Charleston, Alex Rodriguez, Yogi Berra, Stan Musial, Rickey Henderson, Jimmie Foxx
Just missed:
Pitchers - Cy Young, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Clayton Kershaw, Pedro Martinez, Roger Clemens, Warren Spahn, Bob Gibson, Ed Walsh, Pete Alexander, Hoyt Wilhelm, Billy Wagner, Goose Gossage
Hitters - Joe DiMaggio, Joe Morgan, Albert Pujols, George Brett, Ralph Kiner, Sammy Sosa, Johnny Bench, Tris Speaker, Billy Hamilton, Mickey Mantle, Nap Lajoie
Iβm sure you all disagree :) letβs hear it!
The NL and AL went to 154 game seasons in 1904- the only seasons since then with lower leading position player fWAR/bWAR totals than that were seasons shortened substantially by a pandemic (2020) or by WWI (1918). It's not really even all that close- it's been pretty rare in the era of 154 or 162 game seasons for no position players to manage 8 WAR (either kind), and the previous low leading WAR total in seasons of that length was 7.7 fWAR (several seasons) or 7.4 bWAR (Johnny Mize in 1940)
Even seasons substantially shorter than this one have usually had at least one player outdo Trea Turner's fWAR total and Carlos Correa's bWAR total- lowering the minimum to 100 games, which covers every MLB season since 1884 onward aside from 2020, the only times the fWAR leader had a lower fWAR than 2021 Trea Turner were 1889 (with teams playing 130-something games- IDK, kinda hard to tell exactly what the scheduled number of games was in 1800's seasons due to lack of information and lots of games to make up ties), 1918 (season was shortened to around 125-130 games, with some variation from team to team, because of WWI), with 1900 leader Honus Wagner basically being tied (in a 140-ish game season), though through messing with FanGraphs' leaderboards a bit I can tell it rates 1900 Wagner very slightly ahead of 2021 Turner in fWAR.
There's a few other short early seasons where the bWAR leader has less than Correa's 7.2 bWAR- in addition to three mentioned seasons where the fWAR leader had less than 7 fWAR, there's also 1887, 1890, 1891, and 1893, all featuring a bWAR leader somewhere between 6.6 and 7.1 but an fWAR leader over 7- those 4 years all had schedules somewhere between 125 and 140 games, from what I can tell.
1884 should also be mentioned here- Fred Dunlap did exceed both of this year's WAR leaders, but he played in the only-lasted-for-one-year Union Association, the designation of which as a "major" league is... somewhat questionable. If you ignore that, and only count the NL and AA, the major league fWAR and bWAR leaders would both be in the mid-6's (Dave Orr with 6.6 fWAR, and Ned Williamson with 6.3 bWAR), though that was still a fairly short season, with the NL and AA both playing around 110-115 games, from what I can tell.
Of course, it should probably also be pointed out here that overall 2021 WAR (either version) leader Shohei Ohtani has 8.1 total fWAR and 9.0 total bWAR, but that's from both hitting and pitching, not hitting alone.
