I just received my confirmation that I passed C952 and wanted to do a write-up on it while the information is still fresh.
I'll start by saying that this was probably in the top 3 as far as the difficulty of the classes I have taken at WGU. I'll start with my impressions of the course and jump into what I think you need/don't need based on my experience. See the TLDR below for a short summary.
Impressions
As I'm sure you can gather from the paragraph above, this class was difficult. The textbook seems as if it is meant more for electrical engineers than an entry into architecture. There is WAY too much information in the textbook. It is extremely difficult to decipher what exactly is needed for the OA. Even the instructors have a difficult time describing what is on the OA. In my experience, the PA was not a great match for the PA. I will discuss this a bit further below. The Reddit threads that were posted previously for this course have some outdated youtube links which make it a bit more difficult with the lack of external resources. I could not find any really good external resources that matched the book so that was another struggle.
What I did
-There is a study guide in the course chapter that is an ok starting point (filter by most popular). As stated above, the book is very hard to read. The study guide is pretty vague so it wasn't a huge help, but did give me some idea on where to start.
-I watched all of the Lusby webinars available at the time (he is currently in the process of going through all the chapters) and made notes when he mentioned important figures or sections.
-I did all of the practice questions available to me.
-I took the preassessment twice
-I studied all of the things from the preassessment that I wasn't sure about or got wrong.
- I read the majority of each chapter.
-The course took me about 2 weeks of really dedicated studying.
What I should have done
-Most of what I did is somewhat applicable to the course, but not exactly. The preassessment has way more calculation questions than the OA in my experience. I had at most 3-4 pipelining or CPU time questions on the OA. As long as you are alright answering these questions, it will be a non-issue.
-The majority of my OA was specific information buried in each chapter or not present in the book at all. I had 3 questions on ARM instructions that were not in the textbook (The book covers LEGv8).

I am planning to take GIOS, HPCA etc, but all these courses come with some pre-reqs. I have a background in Mechanical Engineering although I have been working as a cloud engineer for last 4 years and have finished nand2tetris but I donβt have any experience in x86.
What are some books / courses that can bring me up to speed in an hands-on way.
How in-depth should I dive into floating-point representation in computer architecture? I understand the basic layout and how it works, but when it comes to floating point arithmetic, I'm a little fuzzy on the details.

Context, I have a non cs stem degree and 5 years of real world software engineering. This would be my 5th class. I got A's in GIOS and software analysis so I'm fairly comfortable with C and C++. I have not taken a computer architecture course and I'm not familiar with assembly.
Any tips or advice for this course? Been in it for a couple months and still feel kind of lost. One of my last few classes. I've gone over the study guide, but I still can't do the calculation questions to save my life.

The good news for some of you is the Russian translation of Harris & Harris RISC-V edition will be sold in January 2022. Moreover, according to a talk at RISC-V Days Tokyo 2021 Autumn, the Japanese translation has been prepared is planned and will be released completed in 2022.

I somewhat recently graduated with a Master's Degree in Computer Engineering. I've started to feel a little bit dissatisfied with my education. After a period of time, I've began to realize I wanted to focus my area of knowledge in computer architecture. I took a computer architecture course in both my undergrad and grad degrees, but that's pretty much it. I wanted to take the "advanced computer architecture" course in my school but it was unavailable. For those who know all about computer architecture, what are some advanced topics on the subject. In addition, what are some resources/reading material that can help me out?
I'm applying to PhD these days and I'm considering both Prof. Marian Verhelst's lab in KU Leuven and Prof. Luca Benini's lab in ETH.
I'm interested in KU Leuven because it's a student city, so i expect things to be cheap, lot of fun things to do, everything close together in a bike ride's reach. Also i wish to explore Europe, so I'm thinking of using my 4 weeks holiday for that, from a central location. I expect a good diversity of students, and speaking in English is also a plus.
ETH Zurich seems good with modern architecture, more facilities and better reputation. But I'm afraid I'll feel a bit lonely there. Also I heard that while some profs are real slave drivers, Luca Benini is quite chill. Although ETH gives 5 weeks of holidays, I'm afraid if the workload would be too much.
What do you think? I'd be grateful to know ur opinion.
-- To clarify, I'm quite hard working myself and i enjoy working in my field. KU Leuven built the impressive Envision processor, which is why I'm interested in their computer architecture team. ETH has good overall reputation. I'm the kind who is fine with pulling occasional all nighters, but I'd prefer to stick to a 8-5 schedule, socialize in my free time and explore a lot as well.
OSR - Open-Source-Redstone architecture
So I don't think this project is going to go anywhere but I've decided to start a project in python to create a virtual computer running a custom OS and architecture, I'm posting this here because my hope is that I can make the operating system and programs somewhat compatible with a redstone computer architecture. If this project works out it could have potential to be a universal architecture that people could build their redstone computers to work with. Then anyone who knows how to can create a program for the system and people could download it and run it. I feel like this isn't ever going to go anywhere for me but I just wanted to put the idea out there in case anyone who knows redstone computers and the architectures behind them wants to have a serious go at doing something like this and make it into something really impressive, and if you would like me to help with any coding behind a project i would be happy to give it a go!

I am from a non-CS background learning CS on my own. While I know how to code (this question is NOT regarding Algorithms and Data Structures), I am not very well versed with Computer Architecture, Operating Systems and other hardware based concepts. I feel like learning that will help me optimize my code better. I have gone through CS50 videos, but they were more like an introduction.

So far in my University I had two courses on programming, a course on data structures/algorithms and two courses on theoretical computer science but I never had some course about computer architecture and until now I thought that I wouldn't really need this knowledge for programming after I discovered this post on stack overflow:

It deals with "Branch Prediction". Somewhere I also read something about "Cache locality". I think that those terms are strongly connected to computer architecture and it seems that knowing such pitfalls would make your program faster(I haven't expected that...).
I considered reading "Code" by Charles Petzold. Maybe you have further recommendations.

Iβm desperately trying to pass my computer architecture course (the Professor is very disorganized and not very good). He doesnβt teach or even follow the book, which doesnβt matter because itβs not very helpful anyway. Iβve been trying to learn on my own through videos, internet, even my freshman CSCI course text has been somewhat helpful thus far, but things are taking a turn.. Would it be useful for a cybersecurity professional to know how computers at an architecture level?

This seems like an obvious question (I can just download a book and start reading), but I want to make sure Iβm asking to learn the right thing. Basically, I really donβt know how computers work. I get the basics (kinda), but I donβt know how everything connects at all. Will reading a computer architecture book help me understand the OS, kernel, compilers, CPU, etc. or do I have to read a bunch of different books to understand all these things? Iβve heard of nand2tetris, but does that cover everything? Is there one source I can use to understand βeverythingβ about a computer?
