Merci d'avance.

Corfu

Hi all. Thinking about planning a trip to Corfu after last year's got cancelled due to the really bad weather they had.

It will be a different season this year so we are less likely to hit the storms but I'm interested in seeing if people would recommend Corfu?

We are thinking of a couple of days in Corfu town then renting a car to take us to Paleokastritsa where we can also drive to different towns and beaches.

Any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A News Blackout on the Fed’s Naming of the Banks that Got Its Emergency Repo Loans; Some Journalists Appear to Be Under Gag Orders

Final edit at bottom. If you are on new Reddit or the standard app, a screenshot from the final update may appear here, when it is supposed to appear at the bottom.

I’m not sure why this screenshot shows at the top of the post, when it isn’t at the top, so I’ll just write here to let you know, it goes with the final link in the final update from 10JAN21, at the bottom. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Alternatively, view this post by opening it in old Reddit:

Second attempt to try to post this...will post the link in the comments below.

Intro:

> Four days ago, the Federal Reserve released the names of the banks that had received $4.5 trillion in cumulative loans in the last quarter of 2019 under its emergency repo loan operations for a liquidity crisis that has yet to be credibly explained. Among the largest borrowers were JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs and Citigroup, three of the Wall Street banks that were at the center of the subprime and derivatives crisis in 2008 that brought down the U.S. economy. That’s blockbuster news. But as of 7 a.m. this morning, not one major business media outlet has reported the details of the Fed’s big reveal.

Edit: This appears to be the dataset used:

(Also, thank you for the awards - I’m just glad this got some attention. The real awards should go to the authors, Pam Martens and Russ Martens, but that’s another matter, and I am not allowed to directly link the WSOP site here in the post, despite the site having an incredibly reputable, fact-based reputation for several decades now. Regardless, the link is in the comments (odd, site-wide rule, huh?). Here is what I will add: Please read the full article, I know it’s tempting to just read a headline, but this is kind of a serious matter in my personal opinion. And, if you would like this to gain more attention, please consider reaching out to your state’s representatives, consider sharing the article with those outside of reddit, etc.)

Edit 2: The site was given the ol’ Reddit hug o’ death - I emailed the author, Pam Martens, explained (and apologized). I don’t think she was aware of where all the traffic was coming from. She said they’re working on a server fix, and was thankful for us bringing this β€œassault on press freedom” (her exact words) to the attention of Reddit u

The arms of Count Ioannis Capodistrias of Corfu (help with its origins please!)

I am writing as a member of the Friends of the Capodistrias Museum. The Capodistrias Museum is dedicated to the life an legacy of the European Statesman, Russian Foreign Minister and first Governor of Greece, Count Ioannis Capodistrias (or Capo d' Istria) of Corfu.

It would be great if you could provide me with any help you can on:

  1. What information can be gleaned from the coat of arms?
  2. Where could we find information on the original title ?

{The plate in the picture is property of the Museum and what given to the Count by the king of France after the congress of Vienna

Arms made of stone are from a Capodistrias property on Corfu

[(I have included the title from the Museum archives). The document has the obvious mistake that they mention being granted arms in 1689 by Charles Emannuel of Savoy (who died in 1675).]

Travel Report: December 25 - January 8. Athens, Corfu, Meteora, Delphi and Nafplio.

I made this post a few months ago asking for help planning a family trip for the holidays. I want to thank those that responded. It really helped me in the planning of our trip. Well, we are back and I thought I'd share our experience which might help others plan their own trips to Greece in the future.

I'll try to keep this organized but it'll also be a bit stream of consciousness. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll answer them as best as possible.

We ultimately decided to structure the trip into 3 segments that totalled 14 nights.

  1. 3 nights in Athens.
  2. 6 nights in Corfu. We took the 1 hr 15 min flight from Athens, then rented a car to get around the island.
  3. 5 nights around mainland Greece. We drove the rented car from Corfu back to Athens, stopping in Meteora, Delphi, and Napflio before flying back to the US from Athens. It was great driving around the mainland. A lot of winding roads because of the mountainous terrains, and some tight spots, but always great landscapes to enjoy.

General Impressions:

I had a few concerns before we got there. One was Covid, which I put my thoughts further down toward the end.

The other two concerns were around the time of the year; the weather in late December/early January, and the question in general about if the off-season was a good time to go, especially choosing an island (Corfu) to stay in for a bit. All three were not a problem at all.

  • The Weather: Besides a few hours of rain a couple of the days, the weather was super nice the whole time. 50s- mid 60s. IMO perfect weather for walking and sightseeing. It even got into the 70's a bunch of days and it was like Spring. It felt great in the sun. I don't particularly like extremely hot weather, so I'm not sure I would even enjoy Greece in the sweltering summer, except if it was a pure beach vacation, I suppose.

  • Going during the off-season: I would highly recommend it. First, there were so little crowds. I don't like going to attractions and feeling like you're in a theme park ride line, so this was perfect. Plenty of people in Athens (The Acropolis was surprisingly busy, so I can't even imagine it in the summer,) but even that was totally comfortable. In the other places, we had many sites to ourselves.

My impressions of each town:

  1. Athens - You can't beat the history and culture of Athens. It was lively and the streets had beautiful Ch
