>In year 0079 of the Universal Century, the Earth Federation initiates Operation Odessaโa full-scale assault to retake a major Ukrainian city from the Principality of Zeon. It is a success, and the remaining Zeon forces scatter across the globe. The Earth Federation gains the upper hand in the One Year War and deploys its ground troops around the planet to hunt down the stragglers.
>As part of the deployments, Ensign Shiro Amada is transferred to Southeast Asia to take command of the 08th MS Teamโa special squadron of RX-79[G] Gundam Ground Type pilots. In their first guerilla operation, Shiro's team is tasked with distracting the Zeon forces while Federation ground troops locate a mysterious new Zeon weapon. Everything goes according to plan until Shiro runs into Aina Sahalin, an ace Zeon pilot he met in an earlier battle, during a skirmish. Their reunion weakens his resolve to continue fighting, and now the young commander Shiro must prove his loyalty to the Federationโor be branded a traitor.
In Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, one of the in universe reasons for the Tiberian Sun era GDI walkers being retired was that soldiers figured out a way to destroy them by slapping explosives to the legs of the walkers. Has a similar method been tried in the Gundam universe, given that the legs of a mobile suit would be a logical target to target to destroy it in land operations ?
I'm kind of putting off finishing Cowboy Bebop, because I don't feel like falling into a show hole, so I'm thinking after I finish I'll get into Gundam. I understand a lot of Gundam can be silly 80's cheese so I've been hoping to start with a Gundam series that looks good. I watched a review of Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team and the description of "Gundam, in Vietnam, with none of the magic silliness of Gundam" sounds incredibly appealing, however I worry I will be completely lost.
What do you folks think? Is there a series I should watch first? I'm a pretty casual anime viewer and my taste is mostly Sci-fi or fantasy with exciting fights, likable characters, good themes, and a lack of weird and creepy anime things (I hope you know what I'm referring to)
