A list of puns related to "Mechanical equilibrium"
Hi. I understand mechanical advantage when I think about the fact that the work has to be equal. For example, in a simple pulley, you could halve the force you exert but would need to double to amount of rope you pull to lift some mass. Where I get confused is in the concept of static equilibrium. I can't really wrap my mind around the following example:
A person stands in a box that is attached to a rope. The rope runs through a pulley and back down to where the person can hold onto it. The Person only needs to apply a force to the rope that is half that of the combined weight of them and the box in order to stay at rest.
How does this work if no work is being done? It appears on surface level that the force is somehow being purely multiplied.
Thank you!!
Is it physically correct to compare the problem of computing the ground-state configuration of a quantum system to the problem of computing the equilibrium configuration of a classical mechanical system? It seems to me that it's a fair comparison, since a classical equilibrium problem could be solved by formulating a lagrangian of the classical system and finding it's minimal energy potential, similarly in a quantum system the ground state could be computed by formulating the hamiltonian of the system and finding parameters that minimizes the variational formulation of the schrodinger equation for such system (parameters for an ansatz I mean).
Is it a fair comparison? It seems to me that the two problems are similar, since both look for the minimal energy of a system
Thanks in advance
So we did an experiment today to do with mechanical equilibrium.
The experiment involved putting a meter stick (beam) suspended on a spring balance between two retort stands and then hanging weights on the beam.
We measured the forces from each point. The total sum of the upward forces or reaction force (taken from the spring balance) were greater than that of the downward forces (total of the force of the weighted elements and weight of the beam)
I can quite grasp why the upward forces were greater than the downward forces. If this is the case shouldn't the beam be moving up into the sky or am I completely missing something?
Are my results consistent with the concept of mechanical equilibrium?

My friends and I were having an argument about a mechanical system:

If there is a thin, stiff rod connecting two even weights equally spaced from a point and put on a pivot exactly in the center of the rod, is there a single equilibrium point if the ONLY force in the system is due to gravity?
A few cases:
If the two weights are horizontal to start, they will remain horizontal. If the rod was rotated by 45 deg (the left weight goes up 45 and the right weight goes down 45 deg), will the system remain in this position?
If one weight is hit with an impulse, will the system continually spin? Will it oscillate?
What if we not have 3 weights equally far apart each connected to the center pivot point by an infinitely thin rod?
What if we now have an infinite number of weights (essentially forming a wheel)?
Things to consider:
Forces, potential energy, kinetic energy.
What do you think? Can anyone prove or simulate this?
EDIT: Fixed "infinitely thin rod" with "thin rod"
Here's my problem:
From the answer given, I can solve the vertical reaction, but I don't understand why should I take the centripetal force in the same direction as the weight -- I believe it should point towards O at all times. Any suggestions?
Hello,
I've completed the design of my first ever complete board game (after working on fan-made solo modes and solo apps for other folks' games), and I've gotten some playtesting in but am looking for more folks who would be interested in playing.
I am calling the game 'Tensor'. It implements what I believe is a unique mechanic, where the players have to maintain several values in equilibrium, rather than working to get the most VPs or most efficient engine. It is currently a 2-4 player game, but playing multi-handed is quite easy and a good way to learn the game.
The theme is inspired by real-world "deep learning" techniques used to build artificial intelligences. You work to maintain a good equilibrium, and can 'hack' other player's boards.
During the game you will lay tiles (representing loading data into your neural net) in unique patterns as specified by your "Tensor card". At the end of each round the tiles on your board will dictate how 5 "weight" tokens move (up or down). While your highest token gives you income and hand size benefits, the winner of the game is the player whose lowest token is the highest.
Tensor card, Player board, and \"Confidence\" board with weights
You will also be able to adjust both your board and weights in special ways using Operation cards (representing writing and running computer code) and endgame bonus cards. All of these actions cost "GPU cycles", representing precious computer processing time.

Tuning on multiple channels: Multiple components of the chemical reaction network in the ATP‐driven transient DNA polymerization systems can be caged by different photocleavable groups that respond to different colors of light. As a result, light can be used to modulate the non‐equilibrium behavior and multiple wavelength‐dependent dynamic steady states.
Fuel‐driven self‐assemblies are gaining ground for creating autonomous systems and materials, whose temporal behavior is preprogrammed by a reaction network. However, up to now there has been a lack of simple external control mechanisms of the transient behavior, at best using remote and benign light control. Even more challenging is to use different wavelengths to modulate the reactivity of different components of the system, for example, as fuel or building blocks. Success would enable such systems to navigate along different trajectories in a wavelength‐dependent fashion. Herein, we introduce the first examples of light control in ATP‐fueled, dynamic covalent DNA polymerization systems organized in an enzymatic reaction network of concurrent ATP‐powered ligation and restriction. We demonstrate concepts for light activation and modulation by introducing caged ATP derivatives and caged DNA building blocks, making it possible to realize light‐activated fueling, self‐sorting in structure and behavior, and transition across different wavelength‐dependent dynamic steady states.

I don't normally make posts of this nature, but I thought it could be helpful to get some of this information in the same place. I was below the karma requirement for a Superstonk post, and someone from the GME sub said you guys might be interested here. I am NO financial expert, and it's very possible that in my attempts to simplify this information for my own understanding I have made a mistake that would seem simple to someone who is. It may perhaps be better to look at the sources I have included directly and draw your own conclusions. Also, I am sure a great many of you are already aware of the information I will share, and attempts to share old information as new could be just another form of the manipulation already so rampant. So it would be helpful to view this all with a critical eye, and I would appreciate corrections. It may be best to view this as an informal PSA about possible market manipulation and those responsible, with a purpose of raising awareness. I left out some key players in the conspiracy in an attempt to be more concise and focus on the threat Citadel poses to our financial markets. This is my interpretation of the criminal conspiracy that has captured the US market, and many of those in charge of regulating and reporting on it.
TL;DR Begins here: The price is wrong. Citadel is naked shorting Gamestop, and the clearing house (DTCC) is complicit. The SEC is aware of, and even encourages it. Citadel plays by different rules than the rest of us. Citadel is still breaking every understanding of the rules, most especially by manipulating the price, and a variety of other criminal activity [enters speculation, 21], as they have done before. [11] In my view as nothing more than an individual American investor, GME is an asymmetric opportunity you should consider buying if you can, holding what you have, and DRSing (direct registering) what you are able to. I don't really have ideological orthodoxies, and prefer to deal in probabilities and possibilities as opposed to certainties. But, I do like the stock if that affects your reception of this information. This isn't really about a particular trade though, or expecting the market to work exactly as I would like every time, it just so happens the illegal manipulation has also produced a possible opportunity by weighting so heavily against retail and applying massive leverage to be the counter party in a bet against all individual investors.

So what can we expect this week?
As of Friday internalization and price suppression via puts was still on the menu. While they churn through FTDs and try to maintain a low price point to do it.
With the threat of massive gamma exposure looming above them this coming Friday it is in their best interest to keep prices low until Jan. 21 expiration.
This asymmetric risk will need to find an equilibrium at some point, we don't know how long they can internalize but we know that it's expensive and the more this FTD cycle winds up the more pressure it puts on their margin.
TLDR: SHF can only internalize DIX for so long.
But on the technical side it looks like we could drop a bit lower this week.
Not to mention the massive amount of put OI at 100
So while this can break to the upside at any time the near-term looks a bit bearish, but as soon as that internalization dumbs and the massive put volume is closed out the upside potential could be realized very quickly. So continue to enjoy the dip while it lasts.

This allowed her you have a lengthy stun duration of 2 seconds (max rank) since there was an attached condition.
Hypothetically, if new Irelia had this mechanic would a longer max rank stun be more viable/balancable? And would it suit the current iteration of Irelia?
Not by any means saying that this would or wouldn't be good idea, just a fun hypothetical to discuss. :)

From achievement names to the various endings to the Fool on the Hill quest, the game tattoos itself with markers of importance throughout its world and its story, and it does so in a beautiful and intricate way.
Since my first playthrough of the game, I've wanted to type up a post that discusses the significance of each tarot card -- specifically, where you find it within the world. As I only finished the game for the first time a few weeks ago (I know, I'm late to the party) it's possible someone has already beaten me to this, and if that's the case, I apologize! Feel free to skip past this, if so. But if you're interested, then strap in, cause this is a long one.
Note: All of my quotations that relate to the meaning of the cards are from the in-game Tarot Journal.
When you find your first tarot mural and being the Fool on the Hill quest, you're encouraged to talk to Misty. She tells you a very brief overview of tarot and associated beliefs and divination systems, but the core of her message is that the locations where you find these "visions" must have some meaning that corresponds to what it is you're seeing.
It isn't difficult to piece these deeper meanings together, but this advice from Misty is what inspired this post. Cyberpunk beautifully foreshadows and reenforces story beats with its tarot placement, and does so in a way where almost every single card can be found in close proximity to a major story event. What I've been able to piece together is below. While note comprehensive, this little excercise was a labor of love, as well as an excuse to write 3,000 words about Cyberpunk (gotta put my degree to use somewhere, right?).
So now, let us examine the 22 cards of Major Arcana.
The Fool
Location: V’s Apartment
The Fool represents the beginning of a journey -- the stepping into a “brave new world.” V’s journey, of course, begins in their apartment. This is meant to be the first Tarot card you find, and assuming you return to your apartment with any frequency, it probably will be.
In Misty’s final tarot readings, The Fool is drawn to represent V. Fitting, then, for it to make its appearance at the place most associated with our protagonist.
The Magician
Location*: Across from Lizzie’s Bar*
The Magician is made to represent Johnny in Misty’s final tarot readings, but that’s not the importance of its location. The Magician represents self-confide

Thousands, she thought, circling hundreds of stars. Some stars had no planets, some a few, while others had dozens, with hundreds of moons. Only a handful had supported life. She'd eaten her fill from those worlds, learning some new tricks in the process. Her favorite was a color changing ability she'd picked up from a crustacean of some kind.
Jennifer's skin had been void black ever since the first time she'd eaten plasma. It was the most efficient color for energy absorption, there was no denying that. It was also effective camouflage in space. But she liked to play with the different colors, sometimes extending an eye tentacle out as far as possible, turning it back to admire herself. She had come to appreciate her new form.
Twice she had stumbled upon systems occupied by sapient species. In both cases she'd immediately fled, before she could do any damage.
Jennifer had been exploring for years. Maybe even centuries. It was difficult to keep track of time in space. There were no natural rhythms to give the regular order the planet-bound expected. Some people would probably give anything to see even a fraction of the things she had. But as fascinating and wonderful as it had been, there was still a hole in her soul that never really got filled. A longing she couldn't shake.
Jennifer needed to talk to someone. Not a simulacrum of a dead mad scientist she'd conjured up, but a real, non-evil person.
It had to be someone who wouldn't be afraid of her, and somewhere she couldn't do any serious damage. She only knew of one sapient that was likely to fit her requirements.
Void angels were huge. A mature one could be the size of a small planet, if you included the wings. There was no way they'd be afraid of Jennifer, who was only 5km long, and most of that in her tentacles. They were sapient, and lived in space, far from anything she could wreck.
There was only one issue. They lived in the Tarantula nebula. Jennifer had never left the milky way before, but her goal was in one of its satellite galaxies. Pretty close as far as galaxies go, but much farther than she'd ever gated. The energy required to form a psionic gateway was proportional to both area of the gateway, and distance traveled. We expect more FTD flow to continue and amplify while many of the ETF FTDs expected over the last 2 days were likely push through dark pools and still need to print to the lit exchange the sheer spike in volume traded seems sufficient to show that the FTD flow has begun.
These FTDs will continue to increase in number as we approach the periods were significant creation/shorting began. Also FTDs from any futures contracts that failed to roll over will likely rear their heads in the coming days.
ETF and MM FTD overlap began yesterday
Much of the current volume is being internalized how long they will continue to carry this risk before it begins to spill out is anyone's guess. Their goal here is to maintain a low price point while internalizing buy pressure in order to get people to sell out of their long-term near or ATM call positions and thus reduce their exposure. Just like with shares they want people to sell.
Here is some of the DP and Odd Lot data for Friday and yesterday.

It is my belief that this price suppression during this period of FTD covering is not sustainable, and is being done in an effort to get people to sell out of long-term options positions based on short-term price movement and thus reduce the extent of Gamma Exposure moving forward in this cycle.
