Going through Matthew McConaughey's filmography is always very interesting. Entire books could be written based on his film/acting choices, it's truly magnificent. I don't think many actors have a more diverse/baffling/weird selection of movies.
He has very clear 'eras/periods/phases' of acting, clearer than most movie stars. Here is my attempt at identifying all of them.
Teen Heartthrob Phase - 1993 to 1995: This is when he was still just a promising, upcoming actor gaining a few notable side roles.

Path to A-List Phase - 1996 to 1999: Hollywood studios were definitely taking notice and starting to cast him as a lead, building his path to becoming an A-list, franchise-leading star. -

Romantic Comedy Phase (aka the Easy Paycheck Years) - 2001-2006: The Matthew McConaughey we all know and love. He seemed to give up on the A-list action star path laid out for him. During this phase, he clearly preferred roles without shirts, preferably set near a beach. Easy paychecks and 3-month vacations. Anyone would have done the same in his position. He did throw in a curveball during this phase with Reign of Fire. Probably mistook that one for a rom-com based on the title, classic mixup.

The Renassiance Phase - 2011 to 2014: The world-famous McConnaisance. Went from rom-com afterthought to one of Hollywood's most respected actors. Took on better roles and most-likely hired an agent that wasn't his local bartender. Easily his best phase.
