Elden Ring’s world and lore are heavily based on alchemy symbolism (specifically the Magnum Opus)

https://preview.redd.it/nggrnif2f7381.png?width=1301&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf9f68388360df24a6315b1dbe7f0f7352ef8a30

To briefly explain what will be an extremely lengthy post, alchemy appears to be a major theme in Elden Ring. Many other games and fantasy works borrow from the rich concepts and symbolism of alchemy and the magnum opus (the Great Work), but the influences in Elden Ring are so pervasive that the inhabitants of the world literally have alchemy references coming out of their asses (i.e., the Gold-Tinged Excrement item). There is a lot to examine, so I’ll cover the major points up front.

  1. The Elden Ring logo can be compared to alchemy-related diagrams of creation/universal connection such as the tree of life, seen in numerous mythologies, and the Ripley Scroll, which illustrate the achievement of the fabled philosophers’ stone.
  2. The player’s journey from lowly Tarnished to golden lord corresponds to alchemy’s magnum opus, where lead is literally or metaphorically turned to gold.
  3. The β€œbloody wolf” identity of the Tarnished mirrors that of alchemy’s β€œgrey wolf” (antimony), a β€œcooperative metal” capable of purifying gold.
  4. Elden Ring’s Godrick and his kingdom Limgrave are symbolically linked to the first stage of the magnum opus, nigredo (darkness, decapitation, lion and serpent images).
  5. Item descriptions point to lore that correlates with other important processes in alchemy, such as dissolution, separation, and the β€œchemical wedding.”
  6. The leaked early concept map >!can be seen as a crucible containing the four classical elements and bearing signs of the seven alchemical operations to complete the magnum opus, as shown in Basil Valentine’s Azoth diagram.!<
  7. Elden Ring’s fingers-and-hands motif can be connected to an alchemical diagram called The Hand of the Philosopher, which itself can be connected to ancient art objects like the Hand of Sabazius and the Egyptian two-finger amulet.

If you are of the opinion that looking too hard for clues ahead of time can spoil your enjoyment later, viewing any of the posted content is not recommended. If you are interested in deep analysis that doesn’t know when to stop, read on. This post will bring in outside resources to compare with publicly available information. No leaks will be discussed or shown, with the exception of the widely circulated early concept art of the full map (which is too interesting to pass up).

Update: I have taken a closer look at Elden Rin

A book that treats alchemy like the "Opus Magnum" game.

I just started playing "Opus Magnum", a puzzle game where you graduate as an alchemy student and start working for a rich person. This game treats alchemy like science and alchemists like a mix between magicians and scientists, and I'm looking for books that portray alchemy like an everyday topic. Thanks in advance :)

Cinnabar Spindle and Alkahest A.K.A Cinnabar and Mercury A.K.A Prima Materia and Magnum Opus

Sorry if my thoughts are not coherent, having a hard time write them down properly, but I just wanted to throw all my ideas and thoughts into a wall here and see what happens.

New event introduced new sword and it's refinement items. Instantly got curious to read the flavor text and as always it delivers more lore. Since the swords name is Cinnabar-

Cinnabar

-and it's not mentioned officially but I feel like the Alkahest might be mercury (quicksilver)-

Mercury?

I recalled that these 2 were important to real-life alchemy as well. Turns out, after reading some stuff on wikipedia, in ancient chinese alchemy cinnabar is considered to be almost as important as gold, possibly having even better "spiritual" quality than gold itself.

Mercury has it's own story as well - alchemists used to believe that it is the First Matter (Prima Materia) from where all metals come from, stage 1, you could say.

Both of these, more so cinnabar (or gold as well), were believed by chinese alchemists to be able to prolong life or even give immortality, possibly this being the "Magnum Opus" of eastern alchemy (?)

Since cinnabar is of high "spiritual" value, ingesting it could've possibly helped with the individuation, the philosophical "magnum opus" that western alchemists valued. Of course, both parties were searching for immortality tho, eastern with this stuff, western with Philosopher's stone.

So, Gold <=> Cinnabar; Immortality <=> Magnum Opus

Another cool point is that chinese alchemists would get mercury by roasting cinnabar or vice versa - by combining mercury with sulfur and getting it to come back to cinnabar.

Cinnabar is also a reddish color, possibly tying itself up with the Rubedo, the last stage of Magnum Opus.

It feels like we're completing what Albedo is searching for by just refining this sword. At least in part.

From Nigredo to Rubedo.

From Prima Materia to Philosopher's stone.

From Mercury to Cinnabar.

Since both the sword and the materials have similar motifs to Albedo's design, another fun though was that what if Albedo is the Alkahest for now, and like a pokemon he's going to evolve to the Spindle after some time, after he reaches the Magnum Opus last stage. Or he could pos

Magnum Dong Opus 2: Post-Nut Ascension - How I YOLO’d my way to $8M and FATFIRE retirement

Every chart has a story - of triumph, of missed opportunities, of clenched butt cheeks and overnight boners

Introduction

Gather 'round again fellow retards and autists. SIR JACK A LOT is back with a sequel to last year’s Magnum Dong Opus on turning $35K to $1.75M (50X) in 2020 by going all-in on a single stock all-shares.

In this post I share my journey from $1.75M to $8M in 2021 and announce my official retirement from trading. Read on for receipts and an epic tale of blue balls to hard-on erection and a climactic finale.

My secret? Post-nut clarity.

Disclaimers

Privacy is important to me. I wish to stay anonymous. This is not financial advice, just my story.

Receipts

My portfolio swings like an elephant’s dong every month. It’s just numbers on a screen

Total cumulative gains/loss from each stock. Hello my 1 GME share!

Rough estimates of each exact trade date and price. Feel free to go back in the charts and follow along the journey

Flashback - Christmas 2020

Let’s set the stage. Remember December 2020 ya’ll?

I sold 88,233 shares GME at $15.50 for some random dog toy in a box company. There were no apes yet, just Ryan Cohen buying more shares with hopes of a company turnaround. There were record COVID cases, vaccines were just approved, and there was even a British virus mutation on the way that turned out to be Delta!

Arc of Blue Balls - Teasing little jack ($1.75M to $1.6M in 6 months)

Chapter 1: The Squeeze

History was made in January 2021. Ryan Cohen joins the board on Jan 11. GME shoots +12% to $20 and then another +57% to $31. The media picks up the story and Elon Musk tweets β€œGamestonk” and to the moon we go! Another +51% to $65. Then +92% to $150. And a deep fuck

Most Popular vs Your Favourite vs Best Representative of the group vs Magnum Opus

I posted this in a different music sub a while back, so I thought I would post a similar recommendation thread here too!

SO basically, this is just to generate discussion and make a quick list of recs for your favourite group (any group; you can do multiple, too)! :)

rules: basically choose a group, and from that group choose which title track song you think is the group of your choice's...

  1. most popular song (objectively, you can do most popular in the fanbase and most popular outside the fanbase if you want to make that distinction; or don't!)
  2. your favourite song (totally subjective)
  3. the song that best represents the group (based on the group's talents and overall concept/sound, which song do you think represents them the best--regardless if it's actually popular or even if you like it or not)
  4. their magnum opus (this is kind of objective and subjective, but y'know, it's the song that you consider to be the group's masterpiece; )

I'll do an example for IZ*ONE (if you have a different opinion from me, please, feel free to share your list too :))

  1. Most Popular - La Vie En Rose (it has the most MV views and it's the song people know them the best for)
  2. My Favourite - Panorama
  3. Best Represents the Group - Violeta (even though iz*one didn't exactly have this song for their last few comebacks [their -one duology], I think the elegant concept and the perfectly in-synch symmetrical choreography is quintessential iz*one)
  4. Magnum Opus - Fiesta (idk, there is just something about Fiesta that feels so perfected; it's a perfect iz*one song, and I think it would be a great song even if it wasn't released by iz*one so, that's just how good I think it is haha; plus the whole album really feels like peak iz*one)

edit: I was planning on responding to everyone's lists lol but I have no more time oof; I have read every list though and have put the recs on playlists (and logged the knowledge into my brain so I seem smart when conversations about these groups come up)

RR’s Strawman Magnum Opus

His open today β€” RR took on the opt out debate and did the classic I see both sides thing before throwing Van Lathan (?) under the bus by presenting the insane hypothetical of Joe Burrow opting out before the CFP final, which has never happened, and isn’t part of the debate, which centers around meaningless bowl games.

CFP Final β€” meaningful.

Rose Bowl β€” meaningless.

This is his Strawman Magnum Opus. He went so far down the fake situation hypothetical he wound up retroactively pretend calling out β€˜his guy’ for an NFL QB not wanting to play in his CFP final, which he played in two years ago and won handily.

Magnum Opus guide (Spoilers)

Grab the quest from Xur, it will ask you to get 7 strange coins, you can do this by completing the new 6 player activity.

Once that is done you need to complete 3 bounties from the horse. After that grab the key from xur once you reputation level 4

Once you acquire the key, head through the portal to the eternal valley or whatever it's called. Off to the right there will be a weird looking stone at the bottom of the hill. There will be a stone next to it that has a small rectangle sticking out. That is where you insert the key. YOU NEED TO BE LOOKING TOWARD THE STRUCTURE TO THE LEFT OF THE AREA IN ORDER TO GET THE PROMPT.

IMPORTANT: If you aren’t getting the prompt, make sure you are on the right quest step. You can get the key but still need to complete 3 bounties from the horse.

Once you've done that, head to the structure you were just looking at, next to it on the cliff edge there is a little tiny cave that you can enter, do the jumping puzzle and at the end there will be a cryo pod you can open. It will drop an item you need to take to banshee.

Once you've taken the item to banshee, you get the Exotic Sidearm Foreunner. Enjoy Guardians!

Sorry for the low quality guide, if you have questions just ask in the comments and I'll answer! :)

Questions about the Magnum Opus and Astrological connections to Alchemy

I'm currently researching Alchemy for a creative project I'm working on and I'd like a bit of help. At the moment, I have two major questions that are slowing me down:

  1. Were Ripley's twelve steps of the Magnum Opus written with the four color-based steps in mind?

When I first saw that he had expanded the four steps into twelve, I figured that each of the originals corresponded to three of Ripley's. However, the fact that he has "Separation" listed as step three and albedo involves the separation of the anima and animus (according to Jung, at least), made it seem like that wasn't the case. Was my original assumption right, did Ripley draw the lines somewhere else, or did he simply not base his twelve steps on the four colors?

  1. Is there a way that the seven planetary metals can fit snugly with the four elements + the three primes? And can the western zodiac fit into that as well, or would that be pushing it?

AMAA Questions Thread for Magnum Dong Opus 2

6 days until story time! πŸŽ„πŸŽ

Ask your best questions for me in this thread and I’ll compile the most upvoted or interesting and post answers in the main story post releasing on Christmas Day. Be a part of history!

My only request is no personal questions as I’d still like to remain as anonymous as possible, thank you.
