I saw a post about your favourite characters in a bad game, and while I wouldn't call MagnaCarta 2 "bad", it was definitely one of the most painfully mediocre games I've played. I still enjoyed it, beat the main story etc, but nobody ever talks about it. I've never played the first MagnaCarta and went straight onto 2, by the ways.

I’ve been seeing all over my Twitter timeline and the media as a whole lately that democracy is at risk and that it is everyone’s right to vote and if you don’t vote you’re not free etc etc. Here is the thing though humans are not prone to democracy and democratic governments humans are pro whatever government that can feed them and provide them relative security and historically this has been monarchies and to a lesser extent dictatorships. Let’s look at countries like Spain, Italy, China for example who are naturally authoritative nations that have very authoritative principles historically and these nation’s populations historically gravitated toward Emperors, Kings, & more recently dictators for taking care of them over democratic leaders. And while I do acknowledge that many other countries like England, Denmark, Sweden etc have had strong authoritarian leaders their way of governing has always been democratic at least in some capacity and it wasn’t natural (Magna Carta etc.). Whether you we like strongman leaders like Francisco Franco or Benito Mussolini is one thing but you cannot deny they were extremely effective in helping their people something democracies today especially in Italy and Spain lack with the state those countries are in currently. These are just a couple of examples of many countries globally with naturally authoritarian populations and nations. They thrive for a King or any other authoritarian ruler and it not only shows in the state of their economies but also some studies and surveys.

Hi again. Three weeks ago I posted about a project I'm working on. For those who haven't seen it yet:

>So, I am embarking on an interesting project. I intend to experience the best art and media humanity has to offer before I die. Namely this is all the highly notable and interesting books, plays, art, music, films, TV shows, and video games. I guess you could call it a bucket list. I've been indexing it chronologically and downloading it to an external hard drive.

I then solicited suggestions for highly notable/significant ancient and medieval literature that I was missing from an early draft of what the list would cover. I got over 100 responses; it was clear I was missing a lot. So, I pretty much started from scratch, doing multiple sweeps of any pre-Renaissance literature, and incorporated many of the suggestions I received, ranging from missing individual works to missing authors and cultures.

I should also note that in order to prevent this list from becoming unwieldly, I am limiting myself to 10,000 entries total, forcing myself to take a more deliberate and top-down approach. So far, I have 261 entries for the time span 4000 BC to 1400 AD: 12 Ancient-era, 121 Classical-era, and 128 Medieval-era works. 251 are literature, 10 are music. In other words, 2.61% of the list is Medieval era works or earlier, which seems quite reasonable to me and leaves plenty of room for more modern works spanning across more mediums.

I thought I would share what I have so far before I begin work on more modern stuff. Note that bolded entries are in the top 1,000 works, the cream of the crop, the most notable of all. If you're following along with me and don't want it to take a decade or longer to get through the whole completed list, just sticking to the bolded entries will give you a good taste too.

Ancient Era (4000 BC - 1001 BC)

Couple of things that Monsieur Barnier noted as the negotiations proceeded before Xmas 2017:

• Barnier watched Jacob Rees-Mogg on TV during an interview where Mogg insisted that Brexiteers "should reaffirm the benefits and historical importance of Brexit for our country. It's as important as the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, Waterloo and Azincourt! We have emerged victorious after all these events and better off!" Of course, Barnier laughed because Mogg didn't mention Trafalgar, which was ironically what I was thinking before reading Barnier's next sentence!!! Interestingly, that's when Barnier started to suspect that May won't last long as prime minister. The guy has quite the political nous (not surprisingly).
• We all know about the Northern Ireland debacle but I never quite appreciated how sinister Arlene Foster and the DUP are until reading this. If it weren't for the DUP refusing Article 48 of the Joint Declaration, the "Brexit" we would've had now would've been so different and nowhere as hard as it is. The Joint Declaration of late 2017 was apparently agreed upon even by so-called hard Brexiteers within the Conservative Party. Olly Robbins, who was May's lead adviser, made sure that the ENTIRE text was agreed upon by the British government and the Conservative Party. Even David Davis was in agreement. In the end, just as May was about to sign the paperwork, Robbins texts her to wait!!! He received a message from Arlene Foster saying the DUP is against the Declaration and would in effect "tank" the UK government if May signs up. In Barnier's words "elle paraît desarçonnée et ne cherche pas a masquer sa déception: J'ai un problème serieux...avec mes alliés irlandais du DUP" (she appeared unsettled and couldn't hide her disappointment: she told them she has a serious problem with her DUP allies). Donald Tusk gave her more time to settle the differences with the DUP, but as we now know, this wasn't meant to be.
  • What makes this all the more sinister is that Article 48 did not insist on Northern Ireland converging to the acquis communautaire and the Single Market rules! That was my impression, but Barnier notes that there was a phased approach: first, the UK will be allowed to propose solutions to prevent the hard border that the UK itself wanted to avoid to honour the GFA. Whilst I thought the EU and the UK would jointly collaborate on proposals and solutions, the ball was actually in the UK's court when it comes to proposals and the

Capital cities may seem unimportant, but they are an interesting way to include worldbuilding details so I would like to know what your capital cities are and why that city is the capital and maybe even how it got its name

Deseret Dominion- Originally Deseret, the first city in thr Dominion, it was changed to Bursa when they abondoned thr city and fled to the colonies. Bursa was the most able to administer the new colonies for it had been doing so for years

Republic of Petra- the Capital/the Impenetrable City (little reference for you ATLA fans) was the first city in Petra, and where the republic was founded. It got its name from a brutal siege where the Kingdom of Faltaria was unable to even breach the gatehouse, thus the name "The Impenetrable City"

Trifal Technocracy- the city of Zentroa was chosen for two reasons. 1, it was the only city on the largest island so it had lots if room to grow and 2, it was in thr center island making controling the other islands easier.

The Roaming Fleet- it didnt have a capital, but it did have flagships throughout its history. The first was FNS. Faltaria named after the kingdom the Fleet originated from. Then it became FNS Tirana after a Faltarian city, then it became FNS Varna, before that ship was destoryed and FNS Magna Carta became the current fkagship

The League of Free Cities- Wien not only was one of the founding cities of the League, it was chosen because it was small. Wien was by far the smallest and least important of the potential canidates, such as Lacerta or Faltar, so it was chosen because other cities wont be intimidated by it. However, its not an offical capital for the League has none, but rather the place of residence for the High King and the meeting place of thr Mayoral Diet

The League of Creepter Cities- Deneva was chosen because of its ties to thr early revolutionary movements. It was a hub for Creepter revolutionaries and thus when the cities delcared independence the city was chosen as the nations Capital.

Republic of Akti- Maincoon was actually one of the smallest cities, Siamese and Mau are both larger, but, like Deneva, it was chosen because it served as a hub for Aktian revolutionaries. It was also the hometown of President Nathaniel Li, so many theorize he made the city the capital in the Akitan Constitution (he was the one who wrote it) out of solidarity though many deny this.

So, for Xmas I got a custom acrylic pen made for me by my Secret Santa (in the official r/fountainpens SS). I saw that it used standard bock hardware, so I decided to swap out the standard SS bock nib unit, with an aftermarket Magna Carta ebonite feed and housing, as well as a Bock titanium nib in F.

I've read that titanium provides a unique and very good writing experience, so I was quite excited. I remembered hearing that the Titanium nibs were ink guzzlers, which is why I went for the ebonite feed which has more ink flow capacity than stock (my guess is around 20-40% more).

I ordered both in at the cost of around £85 combined, installed the nib into the ebonite hardware, and switched nib units.

I took out my brand new bottle of Noodler’s American Aristocracy, an ink that I fell in love with when I tried a sample, but had illuded me up until now because the store I got the sample had already sold through their stock of AA. Had to buy a bottle from Italy because I couldn’t find an American retailer with stock that would ship only one bottle internationally, thankfully their shipping to the UK was reasonable.

AA feathers quite a lot, especially with such a wet nib.

Anyway, back on track; after writng a couple pages, the initial impression that formed in my mind was “it wrote like a premium fountain pen”.

Which brings up the question, what is a premium writing experience?

After a bit of thought, and rifling through my collection comparing different pens, this is what I’ve come up with:

· Soft and smooth.

· Consistent and plentiful ink delivery.

· A bit of feedback, but not an unpleasant amount.

· A little bit of flexibility for when you need it.

And the titanium Bock nib delivers all of these things

Just a heads up for those with the GPD XP. The emulator actually works really well with it.

I've tested a whole bunch of games on it, and these are the that work well and are playable. Keep in mind I'm using .CHD files.

These ones here will play but need some tweaks.

Gow2. With some tweaks, works good some lag here and there.

Chaos Legion. With tweaks, game runs mostly fine except for high enemy count on screen, then it will lag.

Demon Stone (will load and play but graphic bugs all over the place)

King John (yes, he of the Robin Hood tales) had a pretty solid strategy to defeat the French. He was preparing for the campaign for almost ten years and accumulated a huge war chest of £130,000. The grand strategy was to ally with the Holy Roman Emperor Otto and the County of Flanders and strike in a pincer movement against the French king forcing him to divide his troops. King John would advance from Aquitaine in the south while the Germans and the Flemish would advance from the north. Yet somehow instead of coordinated advance, the English push from the south didn't materialize and Otto with his allies was defeated at Bouvines. The failure of this campaign was very important because it angered the barons who paid huge taxes to fund the war and led to Magna Carta. What went wrong militarily?

I am not an expert in History, Constitutional Law, or anything like that. My background is limited to APUSH and AP Euro. This is not meant to be a political debate, just a question about cultural perspective on such founding documents.

Quick edit: Not asking so much about following the laws within, as these are of course recodified a thousand times over in the modern legal system of every nation. But rather, like flags and things, are such documents treated as founding national symbols in other parts of the world?

In the US, it seems that politicians and Journalists are constantly making statements on whether or not something is "Constitutional" and with some this means quoting that parchment document directly word for word, something written with a quill, on paper made two hundred years ago, by people who have been dead nearly as long. They do so with a reverence and respect, which is justified given the historical context we learn lead to the creation and alterations of what, at the time, where some extremely ground breaking ideas about democracy, government, and humanity.

Do European nations, the closest analogies within my limited cultural experience would be the UK with the magna carta and the English Bill of rights which we learn about in a limited capacity over here, refer to their old documents with such an immutable and legendary reverence?

In the honor of music's biggest night taking place within the next couple of weeks, I went back and looked at the previous winners in the rap categories. AND HOLY SHIT. We have some incredibly terrible Grammy winners and nominees.

This post is all about correcting the mistakes the Grammys have made since 1996 where Best Rap Album was first introduced.

The inaugural Best Rap Album was given to Naughty By Nature. This is such a weird pick by the academy. A completely average group during the 90's winning the award over Tupac, Bone, and ODB?! To me, they could've picked any between these 3 releases and that would be satisfying, but I am going for Tupac. Bone might have had the edge sales-wise, but Pac had been in the game for years in '96, and this was his biggest album yet. Giving Pac the Grammy also has a great storyline, due to him being fresh out of jail, being recently signed to Death Row, and having a heartfelt song about his mother on the album. I think ODB is simply too weird of a pick to receive the Grammy

Biggest snubs

• Mobb Deep - The Infamous
• Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx...

In my opinion, these should've been nominated instead of Naughty By Nature and Skee-Lo. Especially Skee-Lo. Big L's definitely has the quality to be nominated, but he was still an underground act at this point and it was his first album, unlike Mobb Deep and Rae (counting the Wu-Tang album).

Nearly everyone seems to have a different definition of what deconstruction actually means. To some, it's a purely critical technique used to derive meaning. Most, however, use it synonymously with subverting tropes by painting them in a "darker" light with more realistic consequences. Both are valid. For many, Martin's prolific subversions of traditional fantasy tropes is a huge draw in itself. This is how long TV Tropes' page for ASOIAF's deconstructed tropes is. That's not getting into the page for deconstructed character archetypes specifically.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good deconstructed trope as much as the next guy. But I think it's fair to say that in recent years, yelling "deconstruction" often feels like a rote, shallow justification to praise a particular work you enjoy over another. The reality is that almost every fictional work with any mild prestige behind it probably deconstructs at least one common trope or another, even Disney movies and children's picturebooks. The alternative is playing absolutely everything straight and with little to no greater depth, which has its place of course, but is usually considered a boring and tedious approach to storytelling in this day and age.

By my quite subjective and personal definition, for a work to be truly deconstructive, it has to dissect and expose the fundamental inadequacies of the genre it is lampooning. There has to be a certain viciousness to it. Much of Alan Moore's work falls into this category because he's ruthless in tearing genres new assholes. Superheroes in particular get no mercy. ASOIAF's deconstructive elements are similarly rooted in revealing the weaknesses of traditional medieval ideals found in conventional high fantasy narratives. How can values of honour and chivalry really prepare someone for the violence and complexities of reality? How can a knight-in-shining-armour reconcile his contradictory oaths? How can a child prince/princess of destiny be expected to rule a kingdom effectively without any knowledge or experience of law, politics, economics, etc? That's the real meat, right there.

As the franchise has pushed forward to crazy new heights, GRRM has become very invested in expanding the setting for its own sake, making it harder for me to view the series as a pure deconstruction. The deeper we g

Hello all!

I would really appreciate some advice with regards to a coin collection I have.

I have been collecting coins since I was very little and over the past 10 years I have done a lot of busking, inevitably acquiring some special 50p/£2 coins and such along the way. I am off to university this September so it would be really useful to have some spare money in the bank, and it feels like the right time to sell my collection.

The face value of the GBP I have within the collection is just over £120 so I would logically like to receive that as the base minimum, but is it wise to sell the entire bundle at once or should I be selling some separately (I think I heard somewhere that the offside Olympic coin was worth a little more, but it isn't in mint condition) or is it worth selling any of these at all really? Most of the coins are in used condition but the 10p ‘C’ and Isaac Newton 50p are both in really nice condition with only a couple of faint scratches on the very backs.

I remember watching a playthrough of a game on YouTube when I was a kid (like 10 years ago). To me it always seemed a bit like a Final Fantasy game. I can't really recall much details, but I think it started with its main character washing up on the shore. I think his name was Juno or Juro or something similar. I vaguely recall the main character beating a huge crab-like monster in a cave and everybody being surprised at his power.

It's not much to go on, but I'd love to hear your ideas!

Edit: For reference the game was similar to Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XIII, The Last Remnant and Lost Odyssey.

Edit 2: OMG, YES! Through some 'games like'- googling based on your suggestions I found the game. It's Magna Carta 2! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZDHS6rEeFA) I totally misremembered some stuff, but that game seemed so unbelievably epic to me as a kid. The main character's name is Yuto. He doesn't actually wash ashore, but is just chilling in a boat in the starting scene. Sorry for the misdirect! :P Anyways, my thanks to all of you!

I moved to downtown new haven in 2007. Over the past years I have seen things improve. Rather than invoke a negativity fest (although, you are welcome to if you'd like) I would like to point out the wonderful things about downtown living. For reference, I live about a half-block from City Hall now right near Elm City Market. I used to live on Temple Street across from the Omni Hotel. I am fairly certain I am in this game for life, but maybe I'll retire to a lakefront somewhere in new england some day as a dream.

Good Stuff. (Keep the Yuletide cheer you jerk!)

1- You don't really need a car anymore.

• When I first moved here you needed a car to get groceries, unless you felt like being a total loser and carting your beer and groceries from the Shaw's on Whalley Ave for like, seven blocks. FYI I did this way too many time with a case of long trails and a full cart of groceries.
• We had that liquor store on College street, and the wine thief maybe if you felt like burning cash? Now you have a bunch of options.
• Larger complaint, but Uber didn't exist and delivery sucked. I remember Katz on Temple for wonderful brunches, but the breadth and delivery of options has improved immensely.
• Yale still raped us on building a great community, but unless you had that all-meaningful Yale ID you were stuck to city buses and thats about it. Nowadays it's cheaper to order a car and skip the maintenance and parking.

2- We have actual entertainment now.

• Seriously WTF I used to walk to union station constantly to get to NYC for shows. It's not the best, but the college street music hall and the Shubert have major entertainment value, even if a plus-sized fucker like myself struggles to fit in those early-1900's seats.
• FYI we still have a movie theater too, but don't you dare excuse that shit PS3-quality projector BowTie calls Screen 4. The rest are alright, and you should probably support them so we can still have our own theater. But really, Burn Screen 4.

3- Cost-of-Living hasn't exploded as bad as it could have.

• The increase happened but not crazily. I could get the same place I had 14 years ago for a couple hundred more a month than I did then, renting.
• Nightlife is still on the cheap compared to venues like New York, the lines aren't bad, and it's really just a chill place.

4- Our food has only gotten more world-class

• At the moment I can walk a couple blocks and eat Thai, Ethiopian, Chinese (numerous styles), French, Italian, Haitian, Dominican, A

El Movimiento de Integración y Liberación y Homosexual (Movilh) se reunió ayer con la presidenta de la Convención Constitucional , Elisa Loncón, y con los convencionales constituyentes Gaspar Domínguez y Pedro Muñoz, para exponer sus propuestas sobre  los derechos de las diversidades sociales.

En la cita participaron lesbianas, gays, bi, trans, asexuales y pansexuales del Movilh, quienes expusieron tres propuestas para la nueva Constitución: reconocimiento de la diversidad familiar, garantías de no discriminación para todos los grupos desaventajados y eliminación del binarismo hombre-mujer de la Carta Magna, cambiando tales conceptos por los de “persona”.

La presidenta de la CC valoró las sugerencias e ideas, considerándolas como nuevos insumos para el debate, mientras que Domínguez y Muñoz enfatizaron en la importancia de los diálogos amplios con sociedad civil para avanzar a una Constitución efectivamente democrática y representativa.

La vocera del Movilh, Javiera Zúñiga, calificó de “muy significativa la cita. Fue un un momento muy especial y simbólico dialogar y exponer nuestra mirada a la más alta representante de la Convención, así como a dos convencionales constituyentes de las disidencias sexuales, por todo lo que ellos/as representan y por la gran labor que desarrollan, una de las más importantes en toda la historia de nuestro país”.

Por su lado, el dirigente del Movilh, Rolando Jiménez,  agradeció “especialmente agradecemos que nuestras sugerencias fuesen bien recibidas, pues si bien la redacción de la Constitución es una camino largo y donde nada está ha dicho aún, hay clara coincidencia  en la importancia impulsar los principios que hoy expusimos”

“Para el Movilh, esta cita es histórica y altamente simbólica,  una de las más importantes en nuestros 30 años de trayectoria. Por siempre quedará en nuestra memoria”, finalizó Jiménez

Hello! Rookie "genealogist" here. Any advice on free and/or paid family tree websites, document storage providers, and scanning apps?

I just inherited hundreds of pages of genealogy research from my 100-year-old grandmother. I need to scan and upload the content online, both for my family to peruse, but also to add to a public-facing site so others might benefit. There is some cool history here, including family lines dating back to the 12th and 9th centuries in England and to signatories of the Magna Carta.

My current setup is pretty meager. I have dabbled with FamilySearch and WikiTree. I haven't used either site enough to have an opinion. I have scanned documents into Google Drive with my phone. I do not like this option, because while it is easy and fast to scan and upload photos, Google Drive is clunky to work with in general, and the picture editing software is garbage.

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

El Manifiesto del 16 de enero de 1844 cumple hoy 178 años. Este se redactó en la ciudad Santo Domingo y cuyo valor histórico consistió en ser el documento legal para la separación de la parte este de la isla de Santo Domingo de Haití y declarar la independencia de la República Dominicana de la nación Haitiana.

Antecedentes

La parte este de la isla de Santo Domingo o la Hispaniola estuvo ocupada por las fuerzas militares de Haití dirigidas por Jean Pierre Boyer ocuparon la nación durante 22 años. Desde que Boyer tomó posesión de la parte Este de la isla, dispuso una serie de medidas con el propósito de asegurar su unificación. Abolió la esclavitud, que benefició alrededor de 8000 esclavos. Este apeló entonces al recurso de emitir papel moneda, iniciándose así un proceso de devaluación del gourde, a la sazón moneda oficial en ambos lados de la isla. Al mismo tiempo, aumentó el descrédito internacional del gobierno de Boyer.

Otro hecho importante que coadyuvó al afán de independencia, lo fue el enfrentamiento que tuvo la Iglesia católica contra el gobierno de Boyer, ya que este le confiscó sus terrenos y bienes. Ante esta situación, muchos sectores empezaron a protestar y a conspirar contra el gobierno dictatorial de Boyer. A nivel contestatario tuvo cierta importancia la creación de nuevos movimientos integrados por los pequeños campesinos carentes de mano de obra y recursos financieros adecuados con los que desarrollar su actividad productiva.

So today, we celebrate that the Gospel reached Ireland and took hold of the country.

Climate: The island's lush vegetation, a product of its mild climate and frequent rainfall, earns it the sobriquet the Emerald Isle. Overall, Ireland has a mild but changeable oceanic climate with few extremes.
