A list of puns related to "Läther"
So, I've been looking high and low for the last little while for the 2012 re-release of Läther, with the new artwork/packaging, but all the listings I've found (including Discogs) all turned up sold out. I don't suppose there's anywhere I could get one that I might have missed? It's kinda unlikely, but worth a go.
Also kind of frustrating that a few other 2012 remasters like The Yellow Shark are also really hard to find as well. Kinda surprised they became so scarce after only a decade.
I'm a new Zappa fan I know that he wanted to make a big album and the label refused to do it so he released it separately, there's a 1996 compilation called "Läther"
Should I lisen to what Frank wanted it to be or should I lisen to it the way it was originally released?
I'm curious as to how you guys approach listening to the Läther period.
As in you were going to listen to it chronologically? But in the best possible way with some corner cutting . And also. What would you include and leave off if you were going to give the collection to a friend to listen to?
So
The era to me begins with Orchestral Favorites and ends with Zappa in New York.
1975 Orchestral Favorites the concert and studio recordings.
1976 Zoot Allures
1976 Philly '76.
1972-1977 Lather
1976 Zappa in New York
What about you guys?
does anybody want a release of Läther as the vinyl box set it was intended to be? i’d buy that…
Does anyone have audio of such an event? Would love to hear this.
Hey all, I could be a bit biased posting in this sub, but a record shop near me has a 1978 Edison records Läther set for $200 (appears to be Vg+ condition). As much as I love Zappa, that price tag is a little high for my wallet currently.
I came here to ask if this would be worth it to pick up asap or not, since I'm unsure if there is info about how many had been pressed back in '78, and what the odds of coming across it again are like. Also, what are the overall thoughts on this release from members of this sub? Thanks!
As a younger Zappa fan who has been doing some research recently and finding out about LÄTHER and how it was split up makes me legitimately upset.
E.g. Do you prefer the Läther rendition of Tryin' to Grow a Chin to Sheik Yerbouti or a live version?
I’m currently listening to the later albums of his career and can’t seem to get a clear answer. I already listened to 2/4 of the albums and want to know if Läther features different versions of those songs or if they’re exactly the same. Also if you listened do you prefer the four separate albums or Läther.
Just trying to make sense of it all.
Aside from the inclusion of Punky's Whips and being "uncensored," is the 1977 vinyl mix identical to the 1978 mix?
The ZINY tracks found on Läther are which vinyl mixes (if '77 is different from '78)?
And the "unused" Punky's Whips on Disc 5 of ZINY40 also = 1977 vinyl Punky's Whips? And therefore also is found on Läther?
And it sounds like on ZINY40 Disc 5, Chrissy Puked Twice = the full performance of Titties n' Beer that was found on all versions of ZINY?
And finally, just curious: the ZINY40 Disc 5 1977 mix of Cruisin' for Burgers: where does that come from, if it wasn't actually on the vinyl?
Thanks so much. I just earlier realized that ZINY40 disc's 2 - 4 are meant to approximate (heh) a full '76 show, with some slight rearrangement of the songs. Helps the set to make so much more sense to me now, hah.
I've been obsessed with Läther recently, and it's quickly become my favorite Zappa album. I think it flows great as a complete work, and perfectly encapsulates the best parts of every genre Zappa experimented in. I've looked online at discussions about the album, and it seems that a lot of people don't like it as much as the albums it ended up being separated into (Zappa in New York, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt, Orchestral Favorites). I've seen people claim it's "incoherent", or that the tracks "work better in the context of the other albums". While I can kind of understand this for Zappa in New York, I've always thought the songs as a whole worked better on Läther, in their originally intended context.
I think many people prefer the separate albums since those were all that were available at first, which I can understand. But while I wasn't even alive until several years after Zappa passed away, I still listened to the individual albums first and then listened to Läther much, much later (and I still prefer Läther). But, what do you guys think? Do you prefer Läther as it is, or do you prefer the four albums it was separated into?
I’ve been listening to Zappa for about 15 years now but I never got too much deeper than Over-Nite Sensation, Apostrophe and oddly enough Ship Arriving Too Late (found in my old landlord’s attic, ha!). Just found this community, hey hey.
Last year I really spread out and got into the rest of his catalogue but Zappa in New York really stood out to me as a favorite. The level of talent on display is insane and the tunes are great.
Still I don’t really understand how this was assembled. It’s apparently from four (?) concerts in New York in ‘77 right? I started playing the Halloween ‘77 box set and noticed most of the set list and players are the same even if the performances aren’t, necessarily. I haven’t heard the whole box yet but was ZINY composed from those specific performances or another set? Just trying to get a feel for the timeline here. I know there were overdubs too but just wondering about the base performances behind ZINY.
Also what’s the deal with Läther containing most of this album? I’m aware he intended ZINY, Sleep Dirt and Studio Tan to be one album but is the one that came out just to “preserve the original vision” of Lather so to speak? The mixes seem the same and just seems like a redundant release for collectors. And now a new 5 CD ZINY set is coming out so it seems like these tracks have been released countless times.
Sorry for the long post and thanks for any enlightenment you can provide!
Hey guys, in advance of the Dweezil show I'm attending tonight, I basically re-listened to everything FZ.
Ir happens that I have bought recently a new pair of headphones and a nice amp so it some albums it was the first time I listened to them in a pretty good system.
One of them is läther. Läther was one of the first albums I bought, listened to it until my ears bleed, loved it from start to bottom. Then my collection expanded, got the 4 albums that composed läther and somehow, parked Läther. Rookie mistake.
Luckily I looked at it after 10 years or so and thought - hmm this is a good album to have on the phone, as it is a great collection of several Zappa genres. So I ripped it in flac and listened to it.
And I was mindblown. Absolutely. Completly. It is a great album. It has a variety-show type vibe to it. As if it was an episode of FZ meets the muppets. The songs sound different from their individual records, and for me, one of the best FZ albums in terms of sound quality.
So, to wrap this up, läther is more than 4 Zappa albums. As I knew 10 years ago.
I know Zappa originally released it on a radio program and told the audience to record it on tape. I know its been re-released by the Zappa estate but I was wondering if anybody had an original tape of it they would be willing to share. Thanks for any replies.
Particularly regarding these sound bites of conversations between Patrick O'Hearn and Terry Bozzio featured throughout Läther, Sheik Yerbouti, and the Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar series (such as "It's gone!" "What, your talent for sucking? Never.")
Does anybody know the story behind these dialogues and whether they were scripted or not or why they even happened in the first place? It's been a curiosity of mine for a while.
Like maybe Joe’s Garage or Läther Sessions?
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
The doctor says it terminal.
Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB
Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"
I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual
So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes
r/unclejokes for dirty jokes
r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC
r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes
Punchline !
Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat

How the hell am I suppose to know when it’s raining in Sweden?
We told her she can lean on us for support. Although, we are going to have to change her driver's license, her height is going down by a foot. I don't want to go too far out on a limb here but it better not be a hack job.
Ants don’t even have the concept fathers, let alone a good dad joke. Keep r/ants out of my r/dadjokes.
But no, seriously. I understand rule 7 is great to have intelligent discussion, but sometimes it feels like 1 in 10 posts here is someone getting upset about the jokes on this sub. Let the mods deal with it, they regulate the sub.

“I am probably a type O” said the rabbit.

Don't you know a good pun is its own reword?
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies 😂

Edit: Thank you guys for the awards, they're much nicer than the cardboard sleeve I've been using and reassures me that my jokes aren't stale
Edit 2: I have already been made aware that Men In Black 3 has told a version of this joke before. If the joke is not new to you, please enjoy any of the single origin puns in the comments
