Opinion: In the future, ATGMs and Hard-kill APS will the primary weapons and defenses of a tank rather than Main gun and armor.

Title

The turn into the 21st Century, from Iraq to Yemen saw major weaknesses in armor and the ability for it to be destroyed by guerillas armed with much cheaper and portable ATGMs.

The "Death of the Tank" was theorized in the 1970s with the rise of HEAT rockets against traditional steel armor. However, tanks get a huge buff when reactive armor and ERA was created able to defeat armor. Also guided HEAT missiles often were wired guided needing time to reach for the their targets since they were command guided(making them easy to machinegun), and there was a lot of countermeausres like smoke so the tank can pull back to safety. Rockets were inaccurate at distance and missed their targets.

However in the 21st century, we have top attack fire- and forget missiles which can easily shred through the top-armor of tanks and even frontal-hull armor if powerful enough. Hard-kill APS is almost a must nowadays against these missiles, and we see that with most Western tanks. Also mini-UAVs and NLOS missiles also complicates things. Today's ATGMs fire only line of sight, allowing the tank to close in range. Tommorow's ATGMs like the Spike ER will fire Beyond Visual Range and with the future of cheaper mini-UAVs they can guide those missiles far beyond the horizon, so the tank has less area to run and hide to. Tanks can cost tens of millions while ATGMs are up to the couple tens of thousand.

Like Battleships of old to newer cruisers, i think tanks of the future will look nothing like tanks of today. I think they will be vehicles loaded with light armor, lots of APS missile defenses, and lots of tubes for ATGMs. Anti-ship missiles and airpower was the death of the battleship, tanks survived due to cost/lack of NLOS ATGM and airpower can't destroy every tank(small and numerous compared to battleships), now with NLOS ATGMs and mini-drones will change that.

Are there any known instances in history of the "big guns" on a battleship actually hitting an airplane? What about the main gun on a tank?

I do not know what the technical term for them would be, but the especially big guns on a battleship, primary guns? The really big ones. I am sure that many battleships had anti aircraft guns on them, I do not mean those. The big guns on a battleship are/were ludicrously powerful and also potentially very accurate on fixed positions, but, they are not known for their great speed. Hitting a plane with one ever seems wildly unlikely BUT at the same time there have been a lot of planes and a lot of shots by battleships.

Has this incredibly unlikely thing ever happened?

TIL that the main attribute of the Easy 8 is gun depression and ridge fighting. What is the defining play advantage of your favorite tank?

I am an aspiring tomato with 4k games, and a 345 WN8. I watch a lot of videos, and am trying to improve.

Well, this video by Circon Flexes opened my eyes to the massive advantage a M4A34E8 Easy 8 on hills and ridges. As soon as I switched to this play style, my results improved dramatically, and I'm enjoying this tank much more. What characteristic distinguishes your favorite tank and how do you play toward that attribute for a tactical advantage?

More importantly, how do you identify the factors that set tanks above others of similar tier and class?
